I thought I’d share some info from the Boise show, for those of you that are interested:

My sister was lucky enough to get us front row tickets to the show. We were sitting in the Orchestra pit at the Morrison Center. It’s not a very large venue, but it’s not tiny (2,000 seats). Considering my seats at the last Nickel Creek show in Boise (2nd to last row in the balcony) this was a vast improvement. From this vantage point we were able to see many things: both Sara and Sean felt that Fred (Sara’s violin mic) wasn’t loud enough; they were motioning for the sound guy to turn it up; Sara’s toenails were painted a loverly reddish color; Chris was wearing the “mother of all Diesel jeans”; and Sean had on some nice Doc Martens (I’m a huge fan of the Doc Marten) and exactly what the stuff was on the green shirt (it was stuff).

One thing I love about Nickel Creek shows is that they are very simple. It’s the musicians, the instruments and the music. No stage props or anything to distract you from what’s important: the music. I enjoyed watching each of them perform, but felt a bit awkward. They obviously enjoy performing and give their all. (The bass player was very into it on many songs.) Being so close and watching them, I felt a bit like a peeping Tom, like I was invading someone’s private moment and I quickly averted my eyes if one of them looked in my direction. I got over it by the second half and unabashedly watched.

The show was A-Maz-Ing. I enjoyed it thoroughly. They played all the songs you would expect them to play, some from Nickel Creek, others from Chris and Sean’s solo albums and a few covers. Each show I attend I hope for “The Hand Song” but never hear it. But they did do an incredible cover of “Taxman,” my favorite-est Beatles song ever. It was great fun. On the second encore, they played acoustic, stepped out to the front of the stage, away from the microphones and just sang and played. Chris invited the audience to join in singing “When You Come Back Down.” It was beautiful.

After the show Sara came down to shake a few hands as we left. My sister and I had brought along some CDs on the off chance that we would get the opportunity to ask for autographs. Sara was kind enough to sign our CDs and she called for Sean to come over and sign our CDs for us. He walked over to the edge of the stage and just sat right down, like he was going to sit and chat with us. I was able to tell him that I love “The Hand Song,” that it makes me cry each time I hear it. I would have loved to have asked him what his inspiration was for the song and any number of things. He just seemed so personable. However, my sister wanted to get Chris’ autograph and asked Sean if he could get him for us. He did. What a nice guy. Then the nice man that runs the venue told us we had to leave. So I didn’t get to ask my questions, perhaps next time.

All in all it was a great night. I hope you all enjoy the shows you see.

that was a nice review! I'm a little jealous cause at the first NC concert I went to, all the people in the front had sense enough to go up and talk to them, so I saw Sean talking to some people (maybe warlord was there?) and so I'm a little jealous of all you people who are smart enough to stay a while......lol but that was seriously a nice review, and I'm glad you had a good time.
