I wrote a friend telling them about Nickel Creek and when I sent it to him I realized that it could be a great review. Hence its my personal opinon but it will be alot better than people mag's review
Nickel Creek is a band from California. It consists of 3 members, Chris Thile, Sara, and Sean Watkins. Chris plays mandolin, Sara plays violin/fiddle, and Sean playes guitar (acoustic). Sean is the grandpa of the group at age 25 and Sara and Chris are both 21. They have been playing together for about 10+ years. They had a self-titled album out in 1998 and w/ absolutly no radio play managed to sell over 600,000 copies. That album got them the title new bluegrass. Which is somewhat right but they aren't bluegrass. In fact they don't have a genre they fit in. They reciently let out their 2nd album called This Side on Aug. 13th. And in a month they have almost beat their 1st album sells (w/ still no airplay)
Reason why I like them: I'm in to the guitar music. Like your older bands like Eric clapton and others. They all play, write, and sing they're own music. Nothing like these pop corn bands you hear today. If you know your music and listen to an instrumental of them..... no words. I'm also in to the violin music, instrumental wise, always have been. I also want to learn how to play those instruments. Now where does the mandolin come in? Umm I really dont know. I was stuck on the harmonies first and then the guitar and violin weaved in w/ the mandolin caught me again. The first album was like any other first album. They were a pop/bluegrass mix. This second one is very different. You have to listen to it with a very musically open mind. Although instrumental is their blessing, there is only one on this album. They explored their singing abilities here. Borrowed a few things and put the Creek twist to it. Being a die hard fan you would have thought that they were their songs until you looked at the credits. There has been some conflict because the two albums sound very different. But I was glued from the beginning.
They are the type that puts out an awesome album and performs a non repeatable concert. You come there early or stay after the show they come out and talk to you and sign autographs like you live with them. They like to have an intimate performance by performing still in small venues, with other bands, festivles, and unplugged acoustic songs at the end of the shows.
They are ..... different. I love them because they are still growing and in their prime. All of their music comes from their own little heads. And they dont' care if they get famous, have their songs played 24/7, or if people even come to their concerts. They have that kind of spirit that if they are having fun then thats all that matters.
You can pick up their CD anywhere. Nickel Creek & This Side are really good. And yes I am promoting them. If you dont like them take it back. But it doesnt hurt to try them out. Who knows you might love them.
