Tonight I drive to Nashville to see Jamgrass at the Ryman. Sam Bush, The David Grisman Quintet and Yonder Mountain String Band. I'm pretty pumped about it. Can't wait to see the Dawg in action. I'm also hoping to see Tony Rice there as well. Anybody else going?

Here's my report from Jamgrass 2002 at the Ryman

well jamgrass was pretty sweet last night. just to preface - tony rice was not there, dang that pollstar site for playing with my head, but still it was good. we had good seats in the balcony. the yonder mountain string band was really good, i got into some of their stuff and then at the end of their set, they called sam to play fiddle for a tune, then the last one they called the Dawg out to help. then the DGQ came on - definitely the highlight of the night. they played a bunch of stuff off the new cd that sounded great, i was glad i had already bought it so i new the songs, they played a couple old dawg tunes too with the new twist of flute, etc. they also played the cool tune Grateful Dawg off the Garcia/grisman album, when dawg dedicated it to jerry, all the hippies in the crowd went ape.

the best part of the night - the part that made my trip worth it, was the last song of the DGQ set. when you are in nashville, things happen that couldn't happen anywhere else. the dawg called out on stage a bunch of people who were there for the show to help them with one of my favorite grisman tunes from the old days Dawg's Bull Out came ricky skaggs, buck white, del mccoury, ronnie mccoury, sam, some old banjo player i didn't know, and the legendary fiddler Vassar Clements decked out in suit and tie. there were 6 mando players on stage! it was a killer jam.

then sam came on, and did his usual set with the more rock stuff, best part was the version of same ol' river with the dawgs help, those two do this funny thing where they bow to each other holding out their mandos whenever they play together.

it was great

The banjo player was J.D. Crowe. He's pretty much a legend in is own right. Both Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice were part of his group in the 70's.
