My first post here. My name is Jay, and just wanted to first introduce myself. I am a big fan of the band and decided to come on in here, and join in the discussions. :) I just saw the band today in San Francisco, at our local radio station. They held a really small private concert, that I had the privelidge to attend.
Boy was it great! I have never been to as intimate a concert as this one was. Very small room with maybe 45-50 people fitting in there. Chris, Sara, and Sean were very cool and played a beautiful set, litterally 3 feet away from my our seats. It was spectacular. While Jammin' hard on a cover of the Beatles classic tax man Sean broke a guitar string, and they had to stop, but while Sean started fixing the problem, Chris started in with his version of rockin the suburbs (Ben Folds tune), it was pretty funny, and cool at the same time. We all had a good time in there. Energy was pretty high for such a small crowd, and the fact that each member of the band has such great personalities, combined with their *obvious* great musical talents, it really held our respect for this amazing band. They had also told us about their soap opera drama that had went on the night before at the Filmore, but assured us that Sara was feeling a lot better today. :) She definately rocked the house! I really liked how down to earth they all seemed, joking and talking with us, almost as if we knew each other on a personal level. That is hard to find with most bands. It was pretty funny, before they even got up to the top floor (where the room was) about 15 of us fans rode the elevator up with the band, (as they didnt want us to have to wait for another car)*how kind* . So there we were all scrunched up together, Chris was right behind me saying well you guys wanted an intimate show with Nickel Creek...hows this for intimate. It was really cool to be hangin out like that with a band, before they got into playing for us. I wish every concert was like this...hehe yeah I'm dreamin'. All in All It was a great performance, and these guys really showed they know how to treat their fans. Other bands should take notes from this one... IMO they're a real class act!

BTW, they passed out signed cd's for us as well. It was a nice little surprise. And yeah I totally thank Kfog for making this possible. It was just so awesome! I was just kind of shocked, that Nickel Creek was gonna be there, because I never heard them play there stuff before, but when I was sent an email saying that they had 20 tickets to give away, and all I had to do was reply to it, heck I didn't waste no time at all, and pretty much begged to be a part of this. That was Thursday, and on Friday, I got the email saying I was chosen. Guess it pays to suck up to radio stations. :p

I am jealous for 2 reasons, one being, you sound like you had such a fantastic time, and while that is awesome and I'm really happy for you, I wish I coulda met them, and 2, you picked a better username than me....

lol, but seriously I'm glad you had such a good time, the elevator part sounds best....and they played the smoothie song? ok now who on this MB said NC sounded like elevator music? someone posted it a while back, and I guess you have proof now...lol

I was just scanning through KFOG's website and saw one of the dj's posted this little thing on the band, pretty cool!

NICKEL CREEK - This Side
We have seen the future of New Grass and its name is Nickel Creek! These jaw-droppingly tight and talented young musicians (20-25 years old!) play like such veterans as Garcia & Grisman, Daryl Anger and Mike Marshall. They're a little folk, a little rock, a little psychograss, and a little jam band, and they sing, strum, and pick like they've been playing together for 10 years…which they have! People actually gasped out loud at their musical prowess during their recent KFOG Private Concert (hopefully airing on Acoustic Sunrise on Sept 29th). And yet they are as playful and easygoing a bunch as you would ever want to hang with. Their new album This Side, a must-have, was produced by Alison Krause. Look for KFOG to bring them back to the Bay Area sometime in the future!

That's interesting not just because of the radio exposure, but because it is a rock station, not a country station. So far, NC's only real airplay has come on CMT and a little bit of country radio. It's very clear that with this new album, they are looking to crossover to the pop side of the music industry (after all, there is no hint of country in the new album), and this is the first sign I've seen that the strategy is working.

If NC becomes a rock hit in the Bay area, it'll likely spread to the rest of the country over the coming months. I think getting them out of the country market would be the best thing that could happen to them.

Oh yeah...another thing... Chris and Sara, were saying that they were so happy to be played on the air at Kfog, because it's a station they happen to really like. They said this before they even got started, it seemed really genuine, that they did actually like the station. Maybe because that's more of the type of music they, themselves listen too?
