I bought a pretty good mandolin off of ebay. There are a lot to choose from, but if you want to keep your cost down and still get an decent instrument, look at the Santa Rosa models. Since you already play a stringed instrument, you know how important harmonics and intonation are. Find someone to help you out if that's possible. And don't think that ugly means bad, sometimes those are your best instruments!
