Hey,
can someone explain this disclaimer that everyone keeps referring to that chris makes prior to singing locking doors? I saw nc perform the song this past winter/spring and remember chris explaining the inspiration for the song being the movie as good as it gets but i don't understand all the fuss about a disclaimer nor it's baring on why it would or would not be on the this side cd.
if someone can clue me in, thanks!

Greg-
I have only seen Locking Doors performed twice and I haven't seen the film As Good As it Gets since I saw it in the theatre, but if my memory serves me correctly the lyrics hint at anti-gay sentiments, a reflection of Jack Nicholson's character, the obssesive/compulsive Melvin, hence the disclaimer.
I can't remeber details, but I think that the character also wasn't all for women either and that might also might be reflected in the song.
I think that it's a good song to see live, but I would be surprised to see it show up on a studio album because of certain lyrics and the disclaimer. That's just my take on it...anyone else....?

Chris explaind that Locking Door were veiws NOT expressed by any members of the Nickel Creek band or staff. He explained that it was based on the character that Jack Nicholson plays in As Good As It Gets. A man who is agorophobic, homophobic, and hates women.
Also Check out the Locking Doors thread. There is a explination as to why they decided not to have it on a cd.

hey again,
mandofocus, you stated that Jack Nicholson's character is a man who is agorophobic, homophobic, and hates women. and if i'm correct, don't the lyrics imply that because he is all 3 of these, he is locking doors. in other words locking doors from these people? hence, i don't recall the lyrics being negative, but that they point out the negative characteristics of Nicholson's character because of his the fears and hate. if this is the case, then why wouldn't the rest of NC support them. chris' message i thought was that we should NOT lock doors off from other people as Nicholson's character does.
anyone else?

Um about the locking doors, I've never seen As Good As It Gets but the first time I heard the song Chris mentioned something about how Jack Nicholson's character had an obsession (well I suppose compulsion is more fitting) with/to locking doors and always checking to see that they were locked. So he is refering to the act itself, not using it to represent anything. Melvin is locking doors, makes everything a chore... that's how I remember it anyway.

Greg, When he gave the disclaimer at our show in SF, he was refering to the 2nd verse that he was disclaming. It is about the guy with AIDS and Melvin's view on it. It's not very PC and because he sings the song in the first person, he didn't want anyone to think those were the bands view on the subject..

Todd, thanks so much for your explanation. You said that the disclaimer is provided because of the fact that the song is sung First Person. I had forgotten this. I have a really poor audio taping of the song and I listened to it closely. Now it makes sense. Because Chris sings it first person, he sings lyrics from Melvin's perspective which is agorophobic, homophobic, and hateful of women. Chris doesn't want us the audience to think that Nickel Creek is any of those three since it is sung first person. IT makes complete sense, and if they record that song, someone might think that it is the voice of Nickel Creek and not Melvin.
To those of you who haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it. It's a funny film and you would understand the lyrics themselves better if you saw the film.
Thanks again Todd, cause I was like what is Chris disclaiming for. hehe

hmm...i'm surprised chris hasn't given a disclaimer about the lighthouse's tale...since he is the lighthouse....ppl might think he killed the guy..i mean...if there wasn't a lighthouse to jump off of...then he wouldn't have died that way...well sounds like a joke they would make...
