I had the pleasure of seeing Natalie Merchant in concert the other day. While Nickel Creek is still Number 1 in my book, it's renewed my love for her and her music. I also LOVE Sarah McLachlan, Cranberries, and a couple other obscure artists I'm sure no one has ever heard of, like Lynn Miles.
Thanks to Nickel Creek I've also been introduced to great artists; Glen Phillips/Toad The Wet Sprocket and Elliot Smith!
I was just wondering what other music everyone else has on the shelf next to the Creekers?
Has anyone heard of Poe, someone compared her to Nickel Creek the other day, but I've never heard of her?
Thanks!

Wow....I love all kinds of music. Dave Matthews Band and Nickel Creek are my two favorites as I have said in previous messages. But I have been listening to a little of Jimmy Eat World the past few days as well, and that cd really really rocks. I usually like less known artists but they are really awesome. I also like Incubus. . . but I really adore Dc Talk probably the most next to NC and DMB. And Jars of Clay as well. Dc Talk lyrics just rock my world :) Some more people I like and have probably mentioned before are Dashboard Confessional, Lili Haydn, Arturo Sandoval, Harry Connick Jr, Mark O'Connor :), and a whole lot of other people. My music mind is very open for the most part

I saw Natalie Merchant in concert a couple years ago with Sting. She was really great. I also like the Cranberries and Sarah McLachlan, so it sounds like we like the same kinds of stuff. I've been meaning to try to get Figure 8 by Elliot Smith, but haven't found it yet. He's kind of Beatle-y sounding isn't he? I've heard the cover of You're Just Somebody That I Used to Know that NC does and liked it a lot. Some Christian artists I like include Sara Groves and Waterdeep (not to be confused with Watermark, although I like them pretty well too--not the same sound though.) Ginny Owens is pretty cool--a different sound. She is a blind Christian singer with pretty cool lyrics.

I once said that Jennifer Knapp's songs reminded me of NC in some ways, and then the other day I read that Chris actually played the mandolin on her Lay It Down CD, which I had never realized. I need to find my CD cover and look to see which songs he played on. That was pretty wierd to find out after I thought that so long ago.

[noise] other bands i love other than NC (and besides bluegrass artists like Dolly Parton, Allison Krauss etc...) such as DMB, Guster, Vertical Horizon, Train, The Calling, Barenaked Ladies, stuff like that. Today actually i had a combo in my cd player of Chris Thile, Moulin Rouge, Jewel, Dolly Parton and Dave Matthews on random :D Almost all of my musical influence is from my older brother, he introduced me to just about everyone up there except NC,Chris, Dolly, Allison and Moulin Rouge. so i borrow (more like steal [evil eye] ) his cds and listen to them [noise]

Since Jewel was mentioned, I must say that her cd This Way is the one that I currently listen to the most, at least once a day. I am also just getting into Kid Rock who they're currently playing on CMT, which seems kind of odd. My other favorite artists include Allison Moorer and Kasey Chambers, an excellent singer-songwriter from Australia. Of course, as far as a great voice goes, no one beats Trisha Yearwood in my book. Nickel Creek is by far my favorite band, especially to see live.

I just watched Moulin Rouge....that is by far one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard! I love it :) I also love the Gattaca soundtrack, Lord of The Rings (o yes!), A beautiful Mind (what I have heard if it at least...great great movie though...if you haven't seen it you need to...that and count of monte cristo), (A walk to remember is actually a very good soundtrack...it has some Switchfoot on it and they are awesome), For Love or for Country (an Arturo Sandoval story), Anna and the King, o goodness, there are so many great soundtracks out there, SCHINDLER'S LIST (I looove Itzac perlman (however you spell his name), Hope Floats, good grief I have a lot of soundtracks now that I think of it hehe....and there are just so many more great one's out there....any you guys like particularly?

ooh i like this topic, always fun because i get to hear about artists I have yet to discover (kinda happened with NC) :)

anywho, let's see, currently i'm in LOVE with John Mayer, another singer/songwriter who's getting famous (check him on Leno Wed. Night) he opened for Glen before, and recently Glen just opened for him! Obviously Toad was my fav band , then they broke up, never thought I'd find another band like'em, until Nickel Creek ! I like listening to ben folds, better than ezra's latest cd, pre-everyday dave matthews hehe, used to be a big depeche mode / the cure fan (80's stuff) , umm... New Order... old Oasis stuff... Glen phillips of course... radiohead... a bit of elliot smith... was a big Police fan for awhile... travis... oh Pete Yorn, he's another awesome singer/songwriter, i bet most of you have at least heard his music, i've spotted at least 5 recent movies i heard his music in... u2, they're always great.... a lot more, but i'm rambling here, anyway i think what i listen to might be quite different--

I have found that a lot of my favorite musicians are guitar players, although I do love all the good mandolin players too. I have recently found a phenominal guitar player who plays in the band Rosenberg Trio. Has anybody else heard this group? I have also really grown to like Antonio Forcione's music, he uses such wonderful dynamics! Also, Jean Pierre Rampal and Claude Bolling are also AWESOME artists. I wonder if anybody else has heard and likes any of these amazingly TALENTED people (??).

the harry potter soundtrack had some very awesome composition on it- a lot more devolpment of themes and cool stuff than usuall in soundtracks.. but hey- that is john williams for ya! lol- there are moments where you can tell he totally ripped off from other composers in it- such as the beginnign of pines of rome, Dvorak's new world symphony [also where star wars imperial march theme and the main jaws theme came from] ..hmmmmmm[think] [think har
but he does new stuff with it- so i am all for it.

My favorite artists are as follows:(besides Nickel Creek and Toad The Wet Sprocket)

-Jump Little Children (check out the song cathedrals from their old album and their incredible new album Vertigo)

-Ani Difranco (she just rocks. Can't beat honest lyrics and fused musical styles)

-John Mayer (I know someone already mentioned him. I listen to his cd constantly. Its amazing. My favorite song is 3 X 5)

-Jeff Buckley ( It is such a shame that such a bright musical career was cut so short. His cd Grace is beautiful, moving and just incredible. If you want a great singer/songwriter look no further)

-Over The Rhine (crazy/artistic, beautiful lyrics, beautiful instrumentation, wonderful vocals and they are Christians! These guys are indie but they have been getting a lot of press. Check out their album Eve -if you can find it. I bought it off the web site)

-Built To Spill (cute little emo band that packs a punch. I reccomend them to fans of Weezer and Dashboard Confessional- Also two of my favorites!)

-Pedro The Lion (christian emo. strong lyrics...cool instrumentation. Great stuff)

-Madison Greene-(What can I say!! These guys blow me away. They combine celtic/african/and acoustic music with poetic deep lyrics that are christ centered. THey are great!)

-Danielson Famile (this band is crazy. Its a family affair (5 bro's and sis's) with toy pianos, triangles, jangly guitars, and squeaky voices. The lyrics are funny and inspiring. These guys are indie christian emo. Check them out!)

I am new to this message board and my guess is that I am little older than most people on here. I came into Nickel Creek through the bluegrass side of things and that is where my tastes primarily lie. Some bluegrass bands I highly recommend are:

-Yonder Mountain String Band, these guys are amazing. They play hard-driving acoustic stiring music. Check them out if you enjoy traditional bluegrass.

-Tim O'Brien, Tim is an outstanding musican who plays anything with strings, and has the best voice in bluegrass music. He used to be with a band called Hot Rize, check them out also.

-Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, Flatt & Scruggs. This might seem obvious but this is where it all started and some of the most amazing bluegrass was made in the late 1940's

-John Hartford, very cool American folk treasure. Sadly John passed away last year. This guy can tell a story like very few.

Besides bluegrass I listen to a lot of Alt-Country music:

-Uncle Tupelo, this is my favorite band of all time. The play a perfect blend of american folk music, country, and punk rock. They draw influnences from Black Flag as well as Hank Sr. An anthology album of their music came out Tuesday.

They broke up and formed two different bands, Son Volt and Wilco. For those of you who enjoy pop music I highly reccommend Wilco. They play really layered amazing pop music, think America's Radiohead. They have a new album coming out, and my prediction is it will be one of the most talked about albums of the year.

Well that is a little introductory of myself and the music I listen to. Drop me a message if you have questions or if you check them out tell me what you think.

I love all kinds of music... Rock, pop, classical, folk, alternative, jazz, bluegrass, etc... Some of my favorite artists are:

Over the Rhine- (I am so pleased to see someone else mentioned them , they are great!) The two cd's of theirs I listen to most are Good Dog, Bad Dog(a very acoustically powered album) and Films for Radio released in 2000. I went to one of their shows last year and it was honestly one of the best concerts I've been to. I just found out they are playing again on May 8th at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. If you're in the area, check it out, you won't be disappointed!

Travis- another one of my favorite live shows... they are just plain good.

Radiohead- genius people.

Jars of Clay- all their stuff amazes me.

Ben Folds- I love his solo album. I can listen to it over and over and I love the songs more and more.

I could go on, but I won't. :)

Jars of Clay and Third Day are both good. I mentioned Jennifer Knapp before, but thought I'd mention her one more time. Also, Chris Rice is good.

2 of my favorite Christian Artist and song writers are Andrew Peterson ( http://www.andypeterson.com/ ) and Bebo Norman ( http://www.highstreetmanagement.com/bebo/bbs_intro.htm ). Andrew's lyrics are great... Simplistic yet Profound. Bebo is currently touring with Third Day. [noise]

third day is fun to see live....... while we are on this topic, .... how about newsboys? any one seen the rotating drum kit the newsboys pull off- 2nd best live band i know of. i think i have seen them a few more times then i have seen creek. [but they have been touring nationaly for years] they have a new album due out soon, that is said to be the most mature cd they have recorded yet.

also sonic flood is great-
and did anyone else here see, or listen to rich mullins before he was killed several years ago in the jeep accident?

Rich is awesome. I have several of his CDs. Andrew Peterson reminds me a lot of Rich. If you like Rich Mullins you should read Arrow Pointing To Heaven ( http://www.klove.com/newspaper/3-5/3-5-13.htm ) by James Bryan Smith. It's about Rich and the things that were most important to him. It was very spiritually Challenging.

I adore Jars of Clay and Third Day...my brother might be playing guitar with a guy named Joel Goddard at Atlantafest this year and Jars of Clay, Third Day, and so many more awesome Christian bands will be there. I am so looking forward to getting to see them :) I also love Sonic Flood....but Dc Talk has the best lyrics in my opinion :) However they are all great lyrics because they are about God! I just love Dc Talk's bluntness :)

i second that motion to read that book-

Wow! You're cousins were going to see him THAT NIGHT??? How did they hear the news that he had died?

Ragamuffin Gospel is still on my list to read, too. Actually I asked for it for Christmas, but Got the set of Sacred Romance, Journey of Desire, and Wild at Heart ( http://sacredromance.com/index.cfm ) by John Eldredge instead (which are also really great books). I did start reading Ruthless Trust By Manning ( http://www.brennanmanning.com/ ) and that is really great! He is a great writer.

That book is awesome!! At my church (Christ Community Church), my pastor -Scotty Smith- had our congregation read that book and it really impacted me! My other favorite christian writers include C.S. Lewis, Dorthy L. Sayers, Francis Schaeffer, Brendan Manning, and G.K. Chesterton.

I know you guys having been talking about Rich Mullins ( who I still adore!) but, have any of you listened to Keith Green? He was such a prophet to our world. Read his bio called No Compromise. Also I am big fan of the early christian music (since my parents were in the Jesus Movement) such as Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, etc.

Do any of you all listen to any of the modern worship stuff? I listen to Delirious, the Vinyard stuff, Matt Redman, Paul Baloche, etc. Wow, I am talking alot! Sorry! :)

PS: Have you guys ever been to the Cornerstone Festival? Its great! check it out!

boy, so much to talk about here-
matt redman rocks! ..better is one day has to be one of my fav songs.

about rich mullins..[the story as best i can remember it]- the concert was in rich's home town - where he lived for several years [wichita, kansas], and i think a benefit concert... not too sure
so it was really hard where it hit-
i found out a few hours after the accident happened because my aunt called me with the news. gosh that was almost 5 years ago- he was killed in 97' i am not sure how they found out, other than some friends called them.-

there are artists who write lyrics, then those who write lyrics, that you can tell they had lived through, and deeply understood what they wrote and sang about.... rich was one of those
one of things that i thought was cool is he took a few years off touring to go teach music to indian reservation children in new mexico-

My husband introduced me to Keith Green's music when we first met back in 1991 and I was blown away by it--talk about bluntness in lyrics. His lyrics were so great. I have a couple of his piano books and sometimes my husband and I just jam to his songs. Yeah, I've listened to Steve Green and Michael Card, too though I don't own anything by them unless it's on a compilation type thing. What about Russ Taff? He's been around a long time too.

BTW, I've gotten Room for Squares by John Mayer after reading these posts. I'm really liking his sound a lot. I'm going to check out some more of the suggestions, too.

Yeah, matt, I agree, Rich did have a unique way with words. One of the best things about Rich was that he was so REAL with people. He didnt try to make people think he was something that he wasnt. He was honest with his struggles and fears, and he was humble about his abilities. (plus I love the hammer dulcimer!)

I also have a few Keith Green CDs. I read ~No Compromise:
The Life Story of Keith Green~ last year and it was a great book.
In it Melody shared about Keith befriending Bob Dylan which i thought was cool. Dylan actually plays harmonica on some of Keiths songs.

A great Quote from Keith Green: If someone writes a great story, people praise the author, not the pen. People don't say, 'Oh what an incredible pen...where can I get a pen like this so I can write great stories?' Well, I am just a pen in the hands of the Lord. He is the author. All praise should go to him.

How about Fernando Ortega or Watermark?? Have any of you guys heard of them before?? They are very amazing, gifted singer, songwriters as well. I enjoy Andrew Peterson and Bebo Norman as well. Did anyone notice that on Andrew's first album, Barry Bales of Union Station (for those of you with Bluegrass knowledge and interests) played bass on a couple of songs. Also, on his new album, Dan Tyminski, which I'm sure you most of you know (the Man of Constant Sorrow) plays Mandolin on a couple of tracks. I agree that NC should do a song with just hymns. When I heard them do Be Thou My Vision at one of their recent concerts it nearly brought me to tears because of the power behind the song, and the stage presence that they had, which made other people at the club sing along. My friends and I were commenting how we were blessed that they aren't afraid to give the glory back to Jesus Christ in their concerts. Its definitely a rarity these days.

I love all kinds of music and am a singer. I heard Nickelcreek close to 2 years ago and just NOW found some kind of club or board for them. [bang] I am in LOVE with them, and bluegrass music, thanks to them.

My other main music interests are Allison Krauss, she is so amazing, I look up to her so much.

And Tenacious D, what a difference eh? ;)

DC Talk, Musiq, Angie Stone, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Nelly, Vince Gill, Jamie O'Neal, Jessica Andrews, Linkin Park, Adema, Alien Ant Farm, Apex Theory, Earshot, Dave Matthews Band, Kirk Franklin, Celine Dion, Mandy Moore, Switchfoot(A Walk to Remmember soundtrack is AMAZING!) 98 Degrees.

Anyone evr heard of Zoegirl? Christian girl group? thier song With All My Heart is Awesome. Good christian band to check out also is Seven.

There are so many others I would love to discuss with you but my fingers would shrivil and fall off if I typed anymore lol.

I've found that I get into a particular band/genre for at least a year, and then I find something else, while still enjoying the previous ones (usually - except for highschool stuff - ugh).
Anyway, here's my favs:

If you're into newgrass you really should have heard of:

Bela Fleck
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (yes, these are 2 different entries!)
Sam Bush, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglass, Edgar Myer, etc.
David Grisman
Alison Brown
Alison Krauss
Gillian Welch
Leo Kottke

Funky stuff you may not have heard of:
Charlie Hunter http://www.charliehunter.com
Infradig Ensemble http://www.infradig.net
John Scofield

Yes, I like these guys too:
Phish
Medeski Martin and Wood
Cake
Ben Folds
U2
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, etc.

Check these out:
Vigilantes of Love (now no longer, but Bill Mallonee is still around)

So, my question is: are banjos basically easier or harder to master than guitars? Are there brands to avoid? Are they just not cool anymore? Can the family's guitar instructor teach me banjo, or must I find a banjo teacher? Hmmmm? Anybody out there know anything about banjos?

My tastes are varied as I listen to anything from 60's & 70's pop, Souther Gosplel bluegrass and Sinatra but primarily I enjoy improvisational rock ala the Grateful Dead.

Right now at the top of my list beside NC are

Phil Lesh & Friends
String Cheese Incident
Phish
Govt Mule
Bruce Hornsby
and others

Oh and you all MUST check out Robert Randolph. He is a pedal steel guitar player who started out playing in churches in North Jersey

Check out his stuff at http://www.robertrandolph.net/

Ah, I love Guster. They are by far my favorite band. Such honest lyrics & beautiful, playful music. They're sorta the soundtrack to my life......
Right now i'm listening to a lot of Spanish stuff. I absolutely adore Argentina's la Mosca tse tse! Um, all Christian rock is good. Reliant K, John Reuben, Superchick, Benjamin Gate, Newsboys, Five Iron Frenzy......
And I love ska music! (and to a certain degree, punk, too) The Pietasters are getting ready to release their new cd & i can't wait!

Same here. Once, but it was soooo great. I went to a show last April at UVa. I got my fortune told with Ryan......he's my favorite Guster. He's such a sweetie! I hate to say this, but meeting Guster was so much more relaxed than meeting with Nickel Creek. I've met tons of bands, but usually I'm not into the same stuff as them therefore kinda unable to have a relaxed conversation. I told Ryan of Guster all about my college plans.....I told Chris of Nickel Creek that he's my hero & then i asked for a hug...see? Oh, well. GUSTER FOREVER!

Lorena McKennet, umm. There are so many more but that will do for now:)

I love Loreena McKennitt. I got to see her in concert in 1998 - it was the greatest concert ever. She's #1 in my book, and Nickel Creek is tied though for that place. I've never been able to see Natalie Merchant, although I love her live album. I also like Dave Matthews, Phish, Enya in doses, Art of Noise, etc, O Brother...

It's great to see we share a lot of common musical tastes!

Enya's pretty good. I used to be on a serious Enya kick in junior high (don't ask) but now it's more Loreena - never compare the two - grrr! I've heard of the Corrs - they're pretty good - and their new song with Bono is okay. I really like this song they did with the Chieftains on their Tears of Stone CD. Really cool.

Yes! Another Loreena fan. I love the way she did The Highwayman. I would always sing it and Mother would get annoyed, saying it is gruesome cuz they kill themselves. But it is so beautiful. I'm not really into Enya too much. Her material all seems to sound similar. I've never heard of the Corrs, I have kinda led a sheltered life. :)

If you are gonna get any Corrs music make sure it's the earlier pre lets sell out and make more money days - the first two albums are good. Other than the obvious I like....lonestar, ricochet, michelle branch, weezer, rammstein, leann rimes (early), elton john, jessica simpson's gospely stuff and savage garden!

Whoo hoo! Another Loreena fan!
I'm so happy she's researching for a new album!

The Corrs sold out? That just tells you how much I get a chance to listen to them. ;)

So much great muic out there and so many great reccomendations :) Recently, I have been listening to a new artist named Norah Jones, she has one of the most beautiful voices-the album was reviwed as an eclectic blend of country, pop and jazz, she is one of the best new artists of this year in my book. I just got a compilation album called From Hell to Breakfast: A Taste of Sugar Hill's Texas Singer-Songwriters...this is one of the best folk collections released in awhile, it includes tracks Terry Allen, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, the always entertaining Austin Lounge Lizards and many more. Also, recently unearthed my Shawn Mullins albums (remeber the song Lullaby?) He really is a great songwriter and musician.
