HMMMM... Where have I read your topic sentence before BART?
Maybe from MY tread!!!! Is this supposed to be a mockery for us girls going on and on (and on and on and on and) about how outragously gorgeous Sean is? Sorry but I think this thread is drop-dead hilarious!

*Bows deeply to Bart* Thank you for building us Sara worshippers a temple in which to pay homage. That, and this thread is damn hilarious.
And Bryan, I'm backin you up, dawg. :D She can be cute, like when she smiles and tilts her head. She can be adorable, like when she does the Sara Shuffle on stage....she can be hot when she looks at me while she plays..... she can be pretty when that long hair flows over her shoulders....... she can be beautiful when the stage lights glow slightly orange around her like a halo as she shuts her eyes while she sings.......and she would be absolutely gorgeous if she was sitting on my lap right now.
Anyone else have any comments on our goddess??
Guys,
Once again:
MEANINGFUL posts, please. This site is for thoughtful discussion about the band and it's music, not for random chatter.
If you want to post pointless noise that's been stated at least 3,000,000 times, please go do so on the other board, not here.
Thanks much.

Chip,
This thread is 99.99% a joke. It is in response to the Sean is HOT thread in the Sean chat. It is all in good fun, everyone is getting a good laugh, and it probably won't get that many responses. Just go check out the Sean Watkins chat to see what i mean..... ;) :D

Yeah Chip, That thread (Sean is HOT) was mine, and while it could have made me mad, I think this is histarical!
And what does that supposed to mean, MEANIFUL? Most of our beloved Nickel Creeks (and extremly hot Sean's) songs make NO SENSE WHATSOEVER!!! (yet I love them anyways) After all, we ARE discussing Nickel Creek!:-))

And Chip, I understand and agree that a post like this is not appropriate and does not follow the guidelines set forth by you and Matt. If only the girls knew that. I'm surprised nothing was said in that other thread days ago. Oh, well...no worries. Yer just doin' yer job, homey.
You'll see that I yelled at the girls in the other thread, but that was because they always yell at us for doing the same thing. A classic double standard on their part. [nono]

Um, if you really believe that, you haven't done your homework :)
There are lots of threads here in the message board archive that talk about the meaning of the songs, and Sean and Chris have also spoken about the meaning behind their songs at various places and times.
I can't think of any lyric that Chris or Sean (or David Puckett, Sean's collaborator) have written that doesn't have a very deep, powerful meaning. Many times the meaning is somewhat obscured in (probably intentionally) rich, metaphoric references... but there is always (so far, at least) a pretty powerful message there.

If I remember correctly the Fox is a traditional song and not writen by any of the NC members but an arrangement.
Also, I would like to add my 2 cents here that Sara is HOT!!!! I don't think I have ever posted that here or anywhere so I think it is only fair I can say that now.
As for a meaningful post, has anyone noticed that on the This Side album Sara doesn't have very many or as many violin parts as on the Nickel Creek CD? I noticed that just the other day...

Yeah, some of their somes have deep messages-but you got to did deep to figure it out! I mean, come on Chip SPIT ON A STRANGER? What on Earth is that supposed to mean? Brand New Sidewalk and Young are o.k. but I personally think they could have done better, and I was hopeing there would be more instumentals. They play so good, but you can't really tell while trying to tell what they are singing about! Got what I'm saying?

Bryan, I was thinking Surfer Girl also, actually!! Seriously!! I mean, she body boards so i figure that it's close enough!!
And I'll second the motion to start a Fuzzy Bunny Suit Club! :D
[evil eye]
As for NC songs.....
-Spit on a Stranger was not written by them. It was by Pavement. Pavement is an obscure indie-rock band that I discovered about 1995 (a friend got me into them). Their lyrics are insane and usually make NO sense. Spit on a Stranger actually one of their songs that actually kinda sorta makes sense, in that funky obscure Pavement sort of way. You'd have to listen to their stuff to understand what I mean. I was just floored when i bought the new album, pressed play, grooved to smoothie song then Whatever you fee-heeel I was like WHOA!! Nickel Creek is doing PAVEMENT! I was very excited.
Anywho....
-Yeah, i noticed the down-play of the violin on the album, but then again, they focused a LOT more on her vocals. Actually, this album is more lyrically/vocally focused than their first. And that was the point. We all know they can do 100mph solos, but sometimes less is more...and they were exploring.
-I was actually rather impressed on how much they had grown lyrically. Brand New Sidewalk floored me once i listened to it a few times.....Chris is becoming quite the poet. And Sean's lyrics are VERY good....Let it Fall is quite profound.

Well.... yeah... but that's true of probably the majority of lyricists that have written music in the last, oh, 30 years... unless one is counting the rather trite stuff written for pop bands such as 'NSync or Britney. (Don't get me wrong, I happen to think that 'NSync and 98 degrees, at least, are extraordinarily talented musicians, they just generally sing stuff that's about as deep and meaningful as a bowl of oatmeal.
I mean, come on Chip SPIT ON A STRANGER? What on Earth is that supposed to mean?
As already stated, not their tune. Neither is The Fox. But the band clearly knows what the meaning is, because Chris has said that Alison wouldn't let them record a song unless they understood the meaning, which is why they never recorded Toad's Windmills (an *amazing* song that relates to, if memory serves, Don Quixote and makes sense in that context.)
Brand New Sidewalk and Young are o.k. but I personally think they could have done better
Better than what ??? I'll respect your opinion, but respectfully disagree. Young was written about Chris' younger brother, Brand New Sidewalk is an incredibly haunting and powerful tune... what we're seeing (IMHO) is a new level of depth and maturity in lyrics as well as instrumentation and arrangement. The cool part for me is that the music does a good job of speaking to two audiences: the audience that's happy with relatively mediocre pop-ish stuff as well as the audience that is seeking deeper, more meaningful music. There aren't many bands that effectively bridge that gap, but NC's done a pretty incredible job so far.
They play so good, but you can't really tell while trying to tell what they are singing about! Got what I'm saying?
It's definitely music that requires more thought and contemplation. You can listen to it without thinking about the lyrics and be moved, or you can listen, hear the lyrics, and *really* be moved. But that's why there are so many different flavors of music out there, so that there's something for everyone's taste.

Yeah, Windmills deals with Don Quixote. Windmills were giants to be conquered...one of Don Quixote's many delusions. Actually, the entire album Dulcinea (which happens to be the heroines name of the book) is themed around Don Quixote. If you take the allegorical meanings behind the book: inner beauty, staunch idealism, etc. the songs do make more sense.
Don Quixote passage on the windmills....just for fun!! (http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~wldciv/world_civ_reader/world_civ_reader_2/don_quixote.html)
And everytime i listen to Brand New Sidewalk I pick up something new....

Okay, what I mean, is I don't care who wrote them, they (the songs) don't mean much if you don't know what they mean. Yeah you,Nickel Creek, Alison, Y'all might know what the songs mean because y'all've searched it out. But someone who's just listening to the songs hears one and thinks WHAT PLANET DID THIS GROUP FALL OFF OF? I don't think that, but I'm just saying.
I totally disagree with you Erika. It takes much more intelligence to listen to NC's songs than to listen to someone who comes out and says in very small words EXACTLY what they mean. It's called artistry. You become more vested in a song (and an artist) if you have actually have to think about it.

a bowl of oatmeal, Chip? [shock] interesting comparison....
i agree, u do hafta really LISTEN to their music to find the meaning and the purpose of it. i guess new fans to nickel creek are used to the bowl of oatmeal singers
i still have to listen to their songs more than once to figure out wat they mean, as does probably even the longest nickel creek fans, but i must admit some of them COMPLETELY are kind of...um.....well, i'm just plain confused (but whats new, eh?)
this thread did start out hilarious, i couldnt stop laffing! [lloll] [lolol]
Part of it is, to some extent, an age thing. NC attracts a very wide audience, people from probably 8 to 80. And I know that on this board, we've got people from 14 to over 60 for sure... and the typical younger person isn't looking for the same things musically that someone 25 is looking for.
But NC has done a pretty good job of appealing to both.
However, IMHO, if you're going to listen to a band that has really wide audience appeal and whose music is much deeper and more meaningful than the bowl of oatmeal style (I'm finding myself liking that metaphor), it really doesn't make sense to criticize it for being deep and meaningful... there's plenty of trite stuff to listen to if you want that, so if you choose to listen to NC, then it might make sense to accept that the metaphor and depth of the lyrics are part of the package.

10-26-2002, 08:09 PM
yeah, I know people who listen to NC and don't pay attention to what they are singing
my question is
How could you not pay attention to or not desire the meaning of music with such emotion portrayed? The music that is written and played, that they pour their hearts into, how could someone not want to know the meaning?
I know, younger people usually don't pay attention to what kinds of things might be behind the lyrics, but to me, it's a really crucial part of it..emotion, I mean...
SO I guess my point was,
How could one listen to any music, original, or redone, by Nickel Creek, and just not feel the emotion that is portrayed?

i would say a similiar thing about mahler's 1st, the firebird, pictures of an exibition, steve reich's violin phase, or wagner's ring cycle- and while a lot of people could at least hum a few of the tunes from a couple of those composers [especially now that fantasia 2000-] - or hear that the ring is just the best opera gets- not too many people have given thema fair listen... or even know how to listen..... learnign to listen to music takes a lifetime.. [even chris woudl say he has more to learn] and is an active and very hard process/ yet has many sides to it..... so it jsut comes down to different people hear different things in music -based on what they have been exposed to [some one with has an rock and roll only background will have no clue how to listen to bluegrass or african drum circles and vise versa], and how mature their ears are also playes a role- playing an instrument at a high profinency levels requires and creates mature ears- so most people who are great instrumentalists have a deeper listening capacity than people who haven't played anythign much.......
it goes a lot deeper than that- but that is a brush at the surface....

I don't what to have to have a 2000 I.Q. just to listen to music. HELLO! I just what to enjoy it. Which I do. I don't want to think while I'm chilinlistening to music. I am me. You are not me. So NO ONE can make me pay attention to the DEEPLY hidden meanings. I JUST WANT TO LISTEN! OKAY?

10-27-2002, 01:31 PM
dude, I wasn't trying to tell you to listen for a deeper meaning, and I hope you weren't taking what I said that way, I was just saying that there's a lot of emotion in music, and I was just wondering how some people sometimes listen to music but don't get anything from it, because there's always a message, personal or trying to get a point across, in any song at all...that's all I meant, I hope I didn't offend you...:)

Hi folks, this is my first ever post so please be gentle.
Last nigh I saw Nickel Creek on a TV show, Later with jools Holland, they played should've known better and I must say I was perplexed. First of all I saw young Miss Watkins and my jaw hit the floor, ure right Goose, Ornot and Bryan (did I get those names right?) she is rather gorgeous isnt she. Anyway thenI saw Chris and was mightily impressed with how he looked a true rock star even though he plays a mandolin-moshing along to the tune. Once my initial delight at these two characters had passed I started to listen to the song, and my, what a song it is i've honestly never heard anything quite like it in my life, in a good way that is! So anyway the next day I was a bad boy and downloaded a few songs (yeh i know, think of the starving musicians) and i'm still loving everything i hear by them, so can someone recommend wat album I should buy first, my two favourite songs ive heard are Hand song and when you come back down but I still really love should've known better if thats any use to yer. Rite cheers for listenin to my crazy rant, which is probably in the wrong forum or something stupidlike that, ah well...

Yeah, I know I haven't been around for awhile. In part to busy with my mandolin, and the other part...lack of desire (not to NC..just this site). It is good to know that I'm still thought of though..and in positive terms too! Bart, hats (and shorts!) off to you. I thought it was fine and its good to know the person we copied isn't upset. But Ornot, I'm a little bit struck at the sitting on my lap statement. Maybe I'm too Sara is such a great and wonderful person, I'm not worthy thing for me to think that far ahead. But it does make for interesting and peculiar chat. and to return to the topic of the thread...no matter how highly debated....Sara=hot. I looked it up in the dictionary. Yes, that would be the Chris McCoy's Dictionary under the I'm right edition (page six, listed after other beauties in alphabetical order). I'm still all for serenading (sp?) Sara. Surfer Girl would be good..given the aforementioned that she likes to body board and seeing that she is from Califorina (Hmm...i wish they all could be cali. girls?). But I would also like other songs like I only have eyes for you in the traditional style (with the bop sha bop). If you can't remember the song..think of an older pepsi commercial of new born babies at a hopistal with pretty girls (or girl) looking through the window drinking pepsi...(oddly enough). Yeah, that was a long explanation. It is a shame we don't all live near each other. We could hit several shows surrounding us and each time with a different song. Of course, making sure she isn't annoyed by it....it would be a shame to anger an angel.
and oh geez...did everyone just decided to freak out and define for themselves what it means to listen to music? From erika's point of view she said that many of their song's don't make sense, not that they don't have meaning. From an argumentative point of view, the word sense she used is mostly likely referring to common sense and i would agree with her in that. On the other hand, i don't think artistry falls under common sense, seeing that you have to look for hidden meaning with plays on words, similies, metaphors, etc. Using and finding this in songs and/or literature isn't common in that not just anybody can do it, it isn't common to everyone. On another ANAL point, some of you tried to say that songs not written by them don't count as their songs. Obviously they can't take legal rights to it but if they cover the song and put it on their album, can they not be judged by it musically? Sometimes I think ppl over anaylze some things. I recall an interview by NC where they stated for the This Side album, they felt as if Smoothie Song was their fun song, their party song ( I could be wrong actually about the smoothie...it might have been another song). Point being, they didn't sit there and break down the song to the interviewer based on all the influence, meaning, and inspiration behind the song..they said...it's a fun song to do. and on my third ANAL point. The purpose of this site was stated as This site is for thoughtful discussion about the band and it's music, not for random chatter. But as the same time we (including the mods) talk about OTHER music besides NC which as I understand NC and NC's music is the purpose of this site. Isn't this a deviation from the purpose statement and the rules? Now calm down all you who are angry and ready to send me a firey reply. All these anal points were made not in my true belief in them but more to show how somewhat pointless this discussion (the music doesn't make sense vs. it is an artisan well of meaning) appears to someone who has just casual read the post. Such bickering and legalisism could scare away readers! [eek!!] Guys, you all make me laugh, I enjoy all your posts from the strange to the ones that are far above my grasp of understanding....let's get a grip.
chris, the goose <><
p.s. yeah i know i know...i'm gonna get some fun replies on this one huh?

given that someone mentioned IQ, I'm gonna have to point this out. George Bush has an IQ of 91.
*pauses for the rest of the world to finish laughing*
and I personally didn't think there was that much 'behind' young or brand new sidewalk and think Chris is a little too adventurous lyrically on occasion. Sean is a good lyricist when he's writing about the right topic. I think NC could have deeper songs if they weren't all about reasonably radio-friendly subjects.

Goose, do not be afraid of me and my sitting on my lap statement...I'm just goofing for giggles. Not that I wouldn't WANT her to, it's just that I'm not making any demands, nor voicing any real daydreams of mine. I'm just going along with the spirit of the thread! :D
As for what songs mean. I believe it's in the eye of the beholder. It's the old saying: If a car accident happens at an intersection of two streets, and there are 4 people, one at each corner, each will give a different story of what happened. Music can very much be this way. Seal, an artist i admire, wrote in his 1995? album about this very subject. You see, he doesn't print his lyrics in the booklet. People ask him about this. He replies that he believes that every person makes songs their own. If you hear a line in the song that strikes you as important, as meaningful, you remember it. But what were to happen if later on down the road you find out that what you heard is not what was said? What if you find out that what it meant to you, was not the message the artist was trying to portray?
As for myself, I was raised by an English teacher (my mother). What that means is i have this compulsive drive to decipher every piece of art that comes my way. I look for meaning in songs, books, poetry, movies....i look for imagery, etc etc. And that's just me. Some people don't give a flying doggie turd....and that's ok too. Because to them, maybe that's not important! Do I think I overanalyze? NO. Do my friends think I overanalyze? YES. They usually make fun of me as after a movie i try to break down the hidden meanings....but it's all good. We are all different. Personally, i've taken what I liked from Brand New Sidewalk. I thought it was one of Chris's better songs lyrically....cause i drew strong images of love and sidewalks....and it made sense to me. Is it what Chris meant? Probably not. Do i care? Not really, cause that song now has a personal meaning to me.
So what is it that all these words are trying to say? I'm trying to say that it doesn't matter how you listen to it....JUST LISTEN. Music means different things to different people, and the way that you (you, as in arbitrarily all of us) listen is not the right way, it's your way.
:D

i don't go LOOKING for the meanings, i just wait for them to come to me...personally, i had thought i had figured out young, but brand new sidewalk came as a complete blur to me...
it kind of ruins the charm of the song for me to go LOOKING for the meaning, because then the mysteriousness (or...well...i dont know, i can't explain it) just, i dunno, goes POOF!!! bye bye, see ya lata...i just, well, (im confusing myself over here)....um....how can i put this...well, im just kind of awed when i hear a great song i love (house carpenter [noise] ), but the meaning just doesnt strike me at first, but i dont care, because the melody just strikes me as being awesome and breathtaking itself.
but if i am REALLY caught up in something, i'll listen to it like 3984720938472234987 7/8 times to see what it means
ornot and goose, feel like typing much? took me awhile to read it, but of course, mentioning IQs, mine is about a negative 91
and welcome to the new person
good points, all of you, they kinda changed my view a lil
Erika --
What I was trying to say is take more though to figure out what someone says when they use vague words. So perhaps not intelligence, but insight and deduction. Listen to the music for whatever reason pleases you, I personally think it's awesome that even though most of the tracks on This Side aren't instrumental, you still enjoy the music that much without delving into the lyrics. That simply shows the cross-section of people Nickel Creek appeals to. I certainly didn't mean to offend you and I'm sorry if I did. Goose -you make me laugh, don't change. :p Taipan-that fact frightens me more than you could know. i really don't think high intelligence should be a judging factor for how good of a president someone is/was...i mean there are many people (like rainman..and john from a beautiful mind..which was based on a true story) who wouldn't quite work as our president b/c of problems yet their iq is amazingly high. and i find it ironic that probably the most intelligent president we had, jimmy carter (intelligent in the iq sense...he was a nuclear enginerring or nuclear physicist in the navy) was one of the most uneventful and one of the less popular ones... i'm so sick of the i've been through higher education arrogance that seems to run through our culture...i think a lot of ppl would be shocked by history if they saw all the influential ppls iq's. like for instance....before the american revo...george washington fought in the french & indian war....i believe if i remember correctly that he was put in charge there for the sole reason ...he was the only one w/ a uniform when he came to sign up. and sara will still be cute when i see her w/my friends in atlanta!!!

Good points, Goose, but...
...Dubya is not stupid. It was all just a very effective smear campaign...taking advantage of his speech disorder. Ya can't get a masters degree in business from Yale if your stupid. I think it was Yale. Anyway, the people that think Dubya IS stupid prove their ignorance, their dependence on the mass media and their inability to think for themselves just by saying so. I apologize for offending anyone by saying that. Please, let's not make this a huge debate. I'll shut up now.
Sara will be adorable when Goose sees her in Atlanta.

Come on...... I dont like or dislike Dubya but I have to stick up for him on this one. When anyone is in the spotlight 24 hours a day for 4 years straight you are bound to find something funny and stupid. Has anyone heard the story about dubya going to a fast food restaurant to get food??? It was a big publicity stunt. Dubya walked into the fast food restaurant and sat down and waited for somone to wait on him! :-)) It seems that dubya had never been to a fast food restaurant and didnt know you had to walk up to the counter and place your order. Someone on his staff had to walk up to him and tell him to stand up and go plave his order!! How funny is that!

Sara was on that cingular ad, but they quit running it like, after the first week. why?
It would be cool if Sara knew Judo and beat the commercial people up!!!:D

He is Hott, but as there is no chance, I kinda gotta stick to the local guys....[splat]

Yeah, No one's trying to be mean. NCFreak and Ornot are just two silly cuties. Silly cuties are like that, am I right? 'sides, I used to be obsessed with Chris, and in fact, my old username for this message board was 'AshleyLuvsChris.' To put it in Sting's words, You're not alone. You're NEVER alone. Kinda creepy...

I've gotta say, even though I'm not inlove with Sara, and I'm not a guy, she IS a cutie...I love the fact that she's not a stick (bodywise) makes us fellow non-sticks, but definitely not fat people feel better to have someone in the spotlight be one too...haha :)

Ha, I should have figured... the great Louis Armstrong! Whoo! cool stuffs!!!
Anyway, staying on topic, yeah, I'm not a guy either, but Sara makes me appreciate all fiddlers, cause, did you know that 80% of all fiddle players worldwide are male?
Homer: Anyone can make up statistics and percentages to prove anything. 40% of all people know that.:D

Back to what I think is the original topic...As to which NC to buy. It really depends on which you like more..speedy instrumentals or catchy vocals. Both have awesome Creek music, but the self titled has more instrumentals and This Side focuses more attention on lyrics, but both have awesome sound. Pick your pony.
As for the lyrics...I am a big time analist and English person. Therefore, I believ that lyrics have meaning, but I think sometimes people dig too deep. Example seven wonders/antichrist thing. Not that Sean isn't smart enought to write lyrics as such, but that not many people would understand it, and then he would have to exdplain it. Which sucks. As for Brand New Sidewalk I am still lost on this one. I see how the love thing works some of the time, but others I don't get it. Just a point... in all of these Song meaning posts love has come up a lot, and I find it hard to believe that a band that admires other bands for their lack of love themed songs would make an album with sooo many love songs. Sean has said that their music deals with relationships with people more so than opposite sex relationships. I see this is Sean's songs, but Chris's seem to rely heavily on love. Perhaps because he is in love and Sean..to our knowledge...is not. Any Thoughts? Please don't think I am digging in their personal lives, but where you are at in life definately comes out in your songs. I just think Chris and Sean are good examples of this. And I hate conflict, so please don't mad cow on me if you don't agree! [sob]

I totally agree. I compose songs on the piano, and if i'm in a good mood, I'll write a song in a chord like 'A minor or D minor,' or some other minor chords, and a steady bass line. but if I'm in a happy mood, I'll write songs in 'C major, F major, or A major, or a major chord, and, depending on how happy/hyper I am I'll usually have a walking bass line. (not to be confused with a walking fish)
desert rose

to sum it up:
sad mood = minor chords, steady bass line
Good mood = major chords, walking fish..er...bass line. :D

my stuff usually turns out modal, minor etc. or a bit of jazz...
you can do so much more with minor modes than major stuff.

For some reason, I really love minor 7th's.....they are so ambient and moody.....that's what I usually write in....

These posts are funny! I love Nickel Creek, and yes, Sara IS beautiful ( I am a girl, don't get any bad thoughts here! ). And, YES, Chris and Sean are extremely hott! I guess you can say that maybe I am obsessed! :D I love Chris' hair! Sean's eyes are just the most amazing thing I've ever seen. :) But, back onto their music. I listen to their CD's practically EVERY day. Okay, now I guess you can say that I'm obsessed, but it's true. Ask my parents, I AM obsessed. But, that's a good thing. I know good music when I hear it, right? ;) And I know good-looking people when I see them, am I right again? :D ;)

Don't worry, Emily, I think I'm bordering on obsession, I HAVE to listen to their music everyday, even if it's just one song! My parents don't mind because they like them too, but perhaps not quite as much as I do. I love them all sooo much! And you are a very good judge of good looks! When I met them I was practically hyperventilating I was so excited!
