Cassie, I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but it was probably the best Nickel Creek show that I've ever seen. I'll try to put up some pictures soon.

Amen to that. I'm constantly amazed by their talent, ability and above all passion for what they are doing. They played close to 3 hours, including 3 encores, and it was simply beautiful.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!![bang] [sob] Don't tell me that!! Tell me that they were horrible, off key, screwed up tooo many times to count, bumped instruments a thousand times, accidentally tied their shoelaces together, fell down. No, don't really want those things to happen, I just wanted to be there sooooo bad!! Now I'm going to be in a bad mood again. Here's a funny story though, last night my dad told me that That Nickel Freak Geek or whatever they are girl fell down on ice Friday night and broke both of her wrists. They have to cancel their shows for the next 8 weeks. After a thousand emotions running through my head, I noticed everyone trying to suppress laughter. [splat]
Oh, well, allow me to go cry because my poor pathetic heart is breaking.....................[sob]

Well, Cassie, if it makes you feel any better, Shawn had nothing but trouble with his instruments and electronics. It took them about four tries to get his in-ear monitor working, and then he broke a string. Rough night.
Lizbeth-Marie, you must have lost count. They played seven encores altogether, two at their mics, then five more at the front of the stage without amplification.
Anyone know what that Christmas song was that they did?

Jimmie- you're totally right. I was thinking of them coming back out 3 times, instead of the number of songs they did. As far as Christmas songs, the three I remember were God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen to open, then Bring Your Torch Jeannette Isabella and The Holly and the Ivy. The last one being one of the encores unplugged. Am I missing anything?

I'm not that familiar with the Bring Your Torch song. Chris recorded it a few years ago for a Sugar Hill Christmas sampler (Tinsel Tunes), but I think it was an instrumental. The one they did on Friday was a vocal, so I didn't make the connection. But you're probably right.
They did do The Holly and the Ivy, but it was before they left the stage, not during the unplugged part. Sara sang it, and then they speeded it up and went into Ode To A Butterfly. At least that's the way I remember it. <g>

Jimmie- Again you're right... as soon as I posted I sat and thought about it and realized that The Holly and the Ivy probably wasn't acoustic. It was just towards the end. It'd be a hard one to understand the words for acoustically, especially since it's not incredibly familiar. As far as Bring Your Torch- I rarely hear anyone even do it anymore. I think I've sang it in a choir somewhere, but all I remember is the title. They did a much shortened version of it-either way it was great.
The Cincy show was the first show I've been able to make it to in a year- and it's funny how you somehow forget from one show to another how amazing they are live, and how they continue to outdo themselves. I just wish they were doing a show soon in Indiana so I could make it to another... anyone heard any leads as far as that goes?

I'm listening right now to the Chris Thile version of Bring A Torch, and I'm guessing that it's really Nickel Creek performing it. In addition to Chris's mandolin, I hear a bass, guitar and fiddle. I'll have to check the liner notes to be sure, but it seems likely that it is Scott, Sean, and Sara.
It is an instrumental, so it's definitely not the same arrangement as the one we heard in Cinci. I think it is the same song, though. My memory isn't as clear on this one.
It's lovely, though. Hard core NC fans will definitely want to add this to their Christmas list. The CD is called Tinsel Tunes.
At the time (a few years ago) that this collection was released, Chris Thile was signed to Sugar Hill, but Nickel Creek was not. So that may be the reason that it is listed under his name rather than the full band.
BTW, were you one of the large group of Indiana-based fans that were waiting in line with me at the door? Wearing the one-of-a-kind Nickel Creek shirts?
Also BTW, I heard some mention of the show the following morning on WNKU. Apparently the program director was there, and loved it. He was especially blown away that they did Beatles and Beach Boys covers. So I wouldn't be surprised if Nickel Creek gets a lot more airplay on WNKU over the next weeks and months.
One more BTW, I was the one who requested Warmth of the Sun there at the end of the show. I'm glad they decided to do it. Be sure to check out my photos from the show. The link is up in the General Discussion forum.

Jimmie- Unfortunately, I was not among the large Indiana group waiting by the door. What time did you get there to wait? I went with several of my friends, (2 who were just roped into it who own no NC), as well as one who's a pretty big fan, but I guess we could say not nearly as obsessive as I am. So I wasn't able to drag them out into the cold nearly as early as I would've been there... We were still decently close, but not as close as I would've liked. I was more off of stage left/center. I think I heard the Warmth of the Sun over more towards stage right? anyway, I'm glad you requested it. I've heard many people mention them covering it, and was glad for a chance to hear it. I also really enjoyed Taxman & Empire Falls which I've never heard them cover before. I'd love to get a live show of any of these songs- if anyone has any available pm me and maybe we could set up a trade. Anyway, I could talk about the show all day, but it's one of those things that is so hard to describe unless you were there. Which I'd say is probably an opinion of all those that have seen NC live.

My daughters and I ate dinner at the Pizza place across the street at about 6:00. We sat at the window so we could see when the line started to form. It was about 6:45 when we got in line, maybe about 20 people were in front of us at that point.

That concert was sooo great. I thought that no concert would ever be better than the one at Greenville, but I was wrong. They blew me away on Friday, and I cannot wait to see them again. We were standing about three rows from the stage, which was perfect for the unplugged encore. They constantly amazed me. After the concert, some of the guys that work at Bogart's said they had never seen such a big crowd there. I hear the place was sold out. I really hope Nickel Creek comes back. Cassie, maybe your parents could come with you next time. There were a lot of adults there. Anyway, it was a fantastic evening.
P.S. Is anybody going to concert in Lexington on 12/11?

After an accidental discovery of NC a year plus ago, i found myself counting the heartbeats until they were to arrive in Cincinnati, for their first appearance in the area. While not impressed with the venue, the performers left no doubt that that my good fortune in discovering them is one of the true joys of my life.
While I am not a concert veteran, several things thrilled me about their performance. 1) Their genuiness,,sara saying upon encore return geez guys..I think maybe its the reconnect they make with the audience..too many big stars come across like the audience is blessed to have their big egos in their presence. NC came across like we're so glad to be here, and we love being able to perform for you. 2) Their sheer musical talent..no group in my memory has so much to offer, such nuance and detail. 3)Their energy, and sound,,granted young respective ages,,but they played, sometimes frenetically, for 2.5 hrs. Ignoring the the crowd attempts at interacting with them, they played a full repetoir, across a full gradient of styles. It was fantastic, and worth every dollar of every minute that my senses digested. The most stunning of all was when they stepped out front of the mics, chiding the audience to be as quiet as them, and that according to Chris, their instruments were hollow. The rendition of When u come Back down was as poignant as any Mcartney
Yesterday. Hollow..my foot..they take my heart along..

Yes, poor loser Cassie has to bring her Mommy and Daddy along with her wherever she goes. (I'm just kidding, upon re-reading this, it came across different than I wanted it to, I'm smiling right now.) It's not that bad though. By the time they get back to Cincinnati, I can go alone. I should be able to now, but no license. And by then, I'll have the rest of my friends converted and I'll drag them along with me!!

I have to totally agree with Jimmie. It was probably the best concert i have ever been to... sorry Cassie. I was standing about seven feet from the stage. Chris and Sean kept looking at me...probably because I was giggling and grinning like an idiot, but oh well.
By the way, Jimmie, I was part of the large group of obsessed nickel creek fans with the one-of-a-kind shirts that was standing/dancing behind you in line. After the show, I showed them my shirt, and they LOVED it. They all signed it!!! Oh, we were from central ohio, not indiana, and you should have come to the lexington,ky concert too. I recorded it!!!

Hi, Linzee. Yeah, it was nice to get to meet someone new there while we were waiting for the show. Lexington was a little too far from Cleveland, but I bet I'll see you again the next time they come to Ohio.
You probably remember that I was busy with my camera during the show, so I hope you got to check out the pictures that I posted. They turned out pretty well.
Where are you guys from in Ohio? What college do you go to?

I'm sooooo sad that I missed it, but I'm trying to behave like a mature (right =) adult about it, next one I'll make it to. I'm glad they had a good show, that means they'll be back. Hopefully not a club though, just my personal preference.
