I was able to swipe a setlist from the stage after the show was over. The following is exactly what was printed on the list... not necessarily what was played:

Smoothie
Beauty
Empire
Reasons Why
Big Sam
Green and Grey
Trouble
Let It Fall
Tom
House
Mountain
Locking Doors
Ferdinand
Seven Wonders
Fox
Shoulda
Bring a Torch
Opening Song
This Side
Booger
H.O.T.

Encore 1
Irish
Lighthouse

Encore 2
Sabra
WYCBD
Spit
Be Thou

Once again, this isn't totally accurate because I know they didn't play a couple (Spit and Sabra) and it doesn't list Taxman, SHB, Lithium, or Super Mario Bros. because they were mostly played as parts of other songs. Also Sarah wrote Hand Song at the end of my list because I told her that I get a lot of requests for it at my radio station.

If anyone can get a complete list, I'd love to see it.

Yes it was an amazing concert...as they always are, of course. My sister and I went. I traveled about 5 hours to get there...well worth it though. I managed to record the concert!!! I am going to be able to get copies once I find somebody who is willing to transfer the tapes onto CDs. It is my first attempt at recording, so I am not quite sure of the quality.

I now have the complete list of songs for the concert! There are a couple that I am not really sure of though. Both are in the Fox medley, and both are fast. One is sung by Chris and is sort of scat-style. I think it is SHB. I really don't know what the one Sara sang was. If anybody knows, please inform me. Anyway...here it is:

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/Smoothie Song
Beauty and the Mess
Empire Falls
Reasons Why
Big Sam
Green and Grey
Trouble
Let it Fall
Tom Bom
House Carpenter
You Don't Have to Move that Mountain
Locking Doors
Ferdinand the Bull
Seven Wonders
SHB?/Super Mario Bros./Sara's fast one/The Fox
Should've Known Better
Bring the Torch
Opening Song
This Side
Hanging By a Thread (Booger)
Holly and the Ivy/Butterfly/Tax Man
Irish (I'm not sure of the actual title)
Lighthouse's Tale
then unplugged...
Silent Night
WYCBD
Hot Pie
I'll Be Home for Christmas
Warmth of the Sun
Be Thou My Vision
Oh Come Emanuel

I didn't include the Chris's version of Oh Holy Night which he sang to a small group of people after the concert. It was the version that Cartman from South Park sings. Chris has it perfected...very funny. That is as complete as I think I can possibly be.

I will confirm Subterrainean Homesick Blues at the beginning of the Fox medley. As for Sarah's song... I really can't remember. Maybe if I had a chance to hear it again, I could pick it out. As it stands, however, I have no idea.

Also... If you've never heard the original SHB, I suggest you give it a listen. It's one of Bob Dylan's finest IMO.

Also also... Tim O'Brien and the O'Boys do a nice version of it on Tim's Red on Blonde album. It's an entire album of Dlyan covers.

Also also also... Tim O'Brien will be performing a free concert in Morehead, KY (Morehead State University) at the end of January. It's a free show, and I'm pretty excited about it. Should be a good time.

I also forgot to mention how I got my tickets to the show. I'm the graduate assistant at Morehead State Public Radio at Morehead State University, and I host an Americana Program on Monday nights. Anyway... when I found out NC was coming to Lex, I asked my program director if he could hook me up with some tickets. He had some contacts at Sugar Hill, and had tickets on hold for me within a week. He also set up a phone interview for me with Chris. He called me on Tuesday, the day before the show and we talked for nearly 30 minutes. I edited it down to a lean 4:02 for broadcast on our afternoon news show. You can hear the edited version here:

I'm working on getting the full 30 minute piece edited and loaded onto my home PC. Also, if you're interested... you can go to www.msuradio.com and vote for your top 20 Americana CDs of 2002. We're counting down the top 50 on New Year's Eve. One person will also win the top 10 albums of the year. I'm pushing for This Side to be #1.

You can listen at 90.3 fm if you're in eastern KY (Lexington to Ashland) 8--12 on weeknights (M-Th). I host Monday nights.

Answers to certain questions of songs within the Fox.
I think the song that Sara sang is called National Anthem by Radiohead which can be found on and my memory is going here, Amnesiac or Kid Aalbums, whichever one sounds more ambient. Also when I saw them in Milwaukee, they covered Take Control by Weezer which is on their Maladroit album. I hope this helps anyone who went to this particular show.

I think the song that Sara sang is called National Anthem by Radiohead I've heard Sara sing the Radiohead song. But that's definitely NOT what she sang in Cinci, and probably not at the other concerts over the past week or two either. She's thrown in something new this time.

That was a great interview excerpt that you created with Chris, and the way he described how he didn't want to throw their music into a box and label it a particular type was a perfect description of their music. Most people who listen to their music DO enjoy various genres of music. The diehard fans of any specific genre are simply locked in their own self-imposed box and refuse to explore beyond their own borders, thereby heartily criticizing when something stretches their strict boundaries. Who wants to live their life in a box and never get to explore? I think NC are musical explorers that enjoy delving into uncharted territory and have a blast mixing different musical styles, and I praise them for it, as I'm sure most everyone here does.

Again, great interview and it would great to hear the entire conversation once it's ready. You're lucky to have certain privilages such as conducting phone interviews with awesome musicians... I'm jealous!

Thanks for the kind words. I now have a 17 minute version of the interview ready to go that I'm going to play on my show tonight sometime between 9 and 10 on 90.3 FM out of Morehead, KY.

I also have the file on my computer and I'm sharing it on WinMX as 1-News - My Interview with Chris Thile of Nickel Creek 12.10.2002 You might be able to find it on there. If not, I'm working on trying to build a page to put it on. Unfortunately, I don't have a page of my own (the first link was to my radio station), and I don't know much about building one. I am working on it though.

If I can get it posted... I'll put up a link here and in general discussion. If I can't... I may be asking for some help.

While you wait... here's something you traditional bluegrass fans might enjoy.

It's a piece I did on the Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival. It's billed as the largest bluegrass festival in the country, and it's right here in Morehead.
