I found an interesting article written by Chris's mother on what it was like raising a prodigy, including a couple of very early family photos at http://www.wrightforyou.com/prodigies4.html and the Watkin's mom has her story here: http://www.wrightforyou.com/prodigies2.html (with pics!)
Here's a pic of Chris onstage that's not quite as old as the above, but looks like maybe a 12 year old Chris? The photo info has both 1996 and 1997 on it: http://www.mindspring.com/~artmenius/december.htm
Here's a plug for an upcoming show with Chris and Mike Marshall in March of next year, with pic: http://www.wintergrass.com/mike_chris.htm

I would home school my kids too if the principal told me he didn't know what to do with my child. Sorry, I am an early education major, and Chris really shouldn't have been moved up. Not having room for a child in a classroom is not reason to move them up. That is my rave for the night.

I agree with Missem completely.. but I also loved the article for what it brought out about homeschooling.. I was raised in almost the EXACT same enviroment/situation that Chris and the Watkins grew up in and how Kathy explained why she pulled Chris out of school, was word for word how my mother has explained it concerning me since she pulled me and my two younger siblings when I was 10, and I'm sooo grateful for my schooling experience being at home. All in all though it was an awesome article. Thank you again Paula for posting it. Also I thought it was soo relieving to know Chris wasn't so happy-go-lucky about practicing even though he's the one that got initially interested in it....and that he was told to practice and didn't always just because of his intense love for the instrument.. that was SO relieving to me because I being raised in music and growing up around it, loved music, but yet I've gone through about every instrument possible since 4 and I've felt so bad for not sticking to anything till JUST recently starting the mandolin again :p. Just my 2cents

Thanks for that post of those pics and article, I like to hear about where they came from! Is it just me or has Sean ALWAYS been a cutie, he looks lovely even in the younger pics, even my friend had to agree that he's yummy!

I think he looks very much like he did when he was younger. I think he still sounds a lot like he did when he was a teenager too, like on the Little Cowpoke cd.

That was really neat!! I have been homeschooling since 9th grade (I'm a senior now) and I feel it has changed me a lot. I think I care less of what people think of me now than I would have. I know my taste in music would be completely different. And I would never have gotten a mandolin and started to play, or be planning to get a fiddle in 2 or 3 weeks!!!!! It's also really great that their family was so supportive, Do you know what my dad did when I got my Mandolin? (Of course not) He asked me if I was going to do this, then turned and faced the wall and pretended to be Chris in This Side, and after that told me he'd give me a week and it's been 2 months and 5 days and I still practice (almost) everyday. That was a nice little rabbit trail, sorry. I just get so exiced sometimes! I wish you could see how fast my fingers were going right now!!
