...that the first two singles of This Side were both written by Sean?

Well, no. I consider it a moot point.

Well, if Sara had written the first two singles I think maybe you would think it was a little bit cool.

*I* think it's cool, and have had that same thought recently as well, so I think your post is cool, too.

Sean is a very talented songwriter who is able to write songs that have universal appeal. The record company recognized that and therefore chose his songs as singles.

You boys are just jealous.

I think it's cool. That means 3 outta 5 of their singles were written or co-written by Sean. He's such a talented song-writer. *sigh*

I'm don't think I would be JUST SO COOL if the only singles that came out were written by just Sara. C'mon. We all know they are talented with similar and varying gifts. To me this moreso borders on...I think so and so..is better than the rest...etc. I think Sean's stuff is very good..and at the same time..Chris' and Sara's. While yes I admit I think she sings like an angel and is very nice and pretty I don't try to play favorites. I am however glad Sean is getting more exposure. I use to worry that people wouldn't notice his stuff as much b/c of possibly being overshadowed (by the press ) by Sara and Chris. I'm not sure who chooses the singles to be released but I'm sure they had their reasons as to they thought these were the best songs or were the songs they wanted to represent the album, etc. I don't mean to burst y'all's bubble it just sounded a lil ...moot I guess...I dunno if that's the word I want to use. I thought of what are you trying not to say such as..what if the singles weren't both by
Sean...would that make it less cool. Hopefully this just shows where I'm coming from. There's no hard feelings I hope. Well now that I think about it I would be happier if a song was written by her, but that's given the fact that she hasn't written anything that has been recorded to my knowledge.

I *knew* that's what you were thinking, Goose! But it doesn't follow logically that because we compliment someone, that means we are putting down anyone else. Did you not read my post about Sara on ACL in her forum? I am an equal opportunity complimenter!

And I think we all know that just because a song is chosen as a single, it doesn't necessarily mean that song is better than any other.

Plus, it's not just Chris who also writes for NC-- there are other songwriters who do it exclusively for a living (and are not performers), and yet Sean's songs were chosen. That is a nice statement about his songwriting abilities.

And your statement that you don't try and play favorites?? That's a bit disingenuous. You are totally enamored with Sara!

The word overanalyzing comes to mind. I never thought that such a harmless remark could spark debate. i DO think it's cool that Sean wrote This Side and Speak. But I'm not saying that it WOULDN'T be cool if Chris or Sara wrote them. But, since this IS the Sean Watkins forum...

Anyway, there are no hard feelings (as there never are and I can't imagine there ever being on these boards)!!

Goose_17
01-05-2003, 09:04 PM
no as a matter of fact i think i may have missed your post in sara's forum..guess it looks like i'm not so *enamored* after all. and correct..just b/c you compliment someone doesn't mean you are dissing someone else...i think it was more just the way it was presented. a whole tone thing. and someone who really involved w/music help me here. if you are a band and can only release so many songs..are you going to release the ones that aren't maybe as well polished as say other ones, or are you going to play the ones that you like and in this case for nc..think that will sell and attract ppl. and now i'm confused..

Plus, it's not just Chris who also writes for NC-- there are other songwriters who do it exclusively for a living (and are not performers), and yet Sean's songs were chosen. That is a nice statement about his songwriting abilities.

Did I say something to the contrary?

And jealous of what? I'm happy that any song by NC is coming out as another solo. I missed something that I'm supposedly jealous of... I agree I think Sean is an amazing songwrite...c'mon Let It Fall is awesome and the only reason it should not be easy to find it b/c its soo good..Sorry if I caused debate. I was just trying to make our thoughts (well atleast mine) to be understood and since ppl know what I'm thinking they could have saved me some time..lol.

Hmmm...maybe yes, maybe no. However, since she doesn't write songs, or at least since NC doesn't do anything Sara may have written, it's kinda hard to say. So, I'll pretend the first 2 singles are songs that Sara sings lead on.

Thinking...thinking... [think har

Well, I guess I would think that was kinda cool, but I also acknowledge that my feeling this way stems from a bias that is attibuted to my fantasy crush on Miss Sara.

Howerver, as far as Sean's writing goes, I still see it as only one part of a bigger whole.

Huh? Where is this thread going? Nowhere! It first started out as saying how nice it is that Sean has two singles in a row. Now it's on to arguing ( sp? )???? Yeah, it would be cool if Sara wrote a few songs, but that hasn't happened yet or they haven't cut any of her songs. Maybe next album. So why is everyone bickering? [think har Sorry, I might have the wrong idea going on here. I'm just really confused!!!!  Don't blame a gal for tryin'!

OK good...I wasn't sure if we were arguing or not. But we aren't, so yay! Anyway, you all are right...this thread is going NOWHERE. So let's change the sub.....to......

Of the three NC songs that have been released that Sean wrote (Reason's Why, This Side, and Speak) which one has been your favorite? Same goes for the ones Chris wrote, even though only one of them has been released.

For me, the Sean one is probably This Side. And for Chris, it would be The Lighthouse's Tale.

That's easy. Reasons Why. Why? Because I like the idea of Sara singing a song her brother wrote. I get all gooey when it comes to brother/sister relationships. I've always wanted a sister, but was never so lucky.

Do I have to choose a song? Especially Sean's songs. It's really weird, I have this connection with all of his song's he's written. It's really weird...*sigh*:o

I have to agree there. I have a brother(half bro, actually), that I don't know, so I like that about Reason's Why. Of Chris', I like Lighthouse's Tale. It's so...unique.

umm i just found out something..according to the discography section of this site, david puckett wrote reasons why, not sean. okay, now after reading the liner notes it says sean and david..so hmm. just an another fact there...and why do they sorta contradict themselves? who knows.

I THINK(but I'm not sure) that maybe David might have done the lyrics, and Sean did the melody. That would make sense, right?

I agree...But I DO think that its kool that Sean is being recognized for his talents, and I'd be just as happy if Sara would get as much recognition, they both do deserve it. (I'll leave it at that)

Not to ruffle any feathers (HA, Goose..Feathers..HAHA) but actually I think their rlease choices could be a little....misleading.
Explanation...
When I bought This Side I bought it primarily to hear more of Sean's Voice. Imagine my thoughts when the first sound I hear after the instrumental is What ever you FEEEELLL! Not what I was expecting....not at all. And while I fell in love with NC I do prefer Sean's voice to Chris's. I think it is weird that Sean is getting so much release stuff when Chris and Sara do most of the lead. Sometimes the thought even comes to mind that Sean is the most main stream member, and therefore is more marketable. PLEASE DO NOT STONE ME! I certainly hope this is not the case. Back to my point...I think they need to release some Chris/Sara stuff to even out the field. maybe even attract a different group of people. I do personally love the Sean stuff...but people who buy NC CDs for Sean's voice are in my opinion let down by the scarceness of it.

Back to the current thread:
Please do not make me pick between the three songs...I love them all. But Reason's Why has the best meaning for me...or wait, maybe This Side because of the 'slide' thing. Oh I give up.

i love that ole sean is getting some attention. as someone else pointed out, you notice he is always always in the background of any visual shots and hardely getting any recognition. i'm guessing part of this is just his somewhat shy personality but i'm glad he's gettin a little spotlight too. now as to one being more mainstream martketable i dunno how'd you come to that conlclusion on anyone. they all seem a little quirky to me, but thats one reason i love em. and i don't really think they take into consideration who and for who people will be buying the cd such as for sean's voice, or chris's mando, or in the videos for sara's face, etc...i mean..i don't think the band does. I think NC just plays what they want. You might be more accurate maybe with regards to any label reps but i couldn't tell ya. Do consider this...there is a whole lot more of Sean in This Side vs. Nickel Creek. So, ya take what you can get. I dunno and I hope that other members of NC aren't worried for one another when they do a solo cd..like sean now..or have the opportunity to play w/other ppl like chris and mike marshall. They all have their gifts and talents but they all know how strong they are together. Also, from the little to none I know about any biz, they can't just throw other stuff out there to maybe even the field. Like many of us would love a solo cd from Sara but as she has said she doesn't have time, or can't find any songs to cover. Not to mention the label only has so much money to support a project at a time. I dunno if I'm making any sense so I'll stop now..come back tomorrow reread it and the add anything I missed.

I think Goose is right - They're all 'quirky' and if anything, Chris's nature is more likely to get him into the commerical or marketable category. I think it's simply been that Sean's songs on this album where slightly more 'pop' cross over, and therefore likely to have some chart success. 'This side' is far more likely to chart higher than say, 'Brand new sidewalk'.
It's not exactly co-incidence (I don't believe in co-incidence!), but I don't think there's any great mystery to it or that there's a hierarchy or something. Just 'suitable' songs.

But all the while Sean is deservedly getting his ego stroked, I'm not complaining!

I think that tagatha said what I meant to say much better than I did. Yo comprehendo? What I meant by more marketable is more pop. Chris's stuff is more quirky than Sean's. I think Chris gets seen as the leader of the group, probably because Sean is so shy. Once again, I am happy to hear Sean...Anytime....Any circumstance.

Does anyone know anything about this David Puckett person? He and Sean have co-writing credits to Reasons Why, The Hand Song, and Seven Wonders. I was just curious what kind of song writing relationship Sean has to this guy, how it came about that they write songs together, is it really a collaboration, or does Sean really just write the music and David the lyrics? Do they even know each other? Does anyone know?
