Can anyone tell if the fiddle Sara's playing in the video for This Side is a four-string or her specially made five-string fiddle? I keep on tryin' to look, but I can't tell. Maybe some of you Sara-Worshipers can tell me. ;)

That’s a four-string fiddle in the This Side video. It's probably her German fiddle from the 1900's but it’s definitely not her five-string fiddle.

It's hard to see but it shows the back of the neck at one point so I paused it and it has four tuners, plus it looks very old and I think her five-string is fairly new.:)

Aww, Sean and Sara look so cute posing the same way, with their hands on their hips.
That's right guys, I said Sean and Sara. So don't go gettin' annoyed that I said Sean looked cute. I mean they both look cute doing the same pose together like two little kids or something. Ya know, like Hey look, we're brother and sister. Aren't we cute? Can you tell I'm an only child? :(

I was a bit surprised to see my mug when I opened up this thread. That picture was taken in the green room just after the concert. The trivia is that Vince Gill was standing on the other side of the door that's behind Sara and myself. Too bad there wasn't a window. It was a great night and a great show.
Yep, Chris's hair was pretty wild at the Ravinia concert. That one was taken just after they got off stage. We were all messing with Sara's 5-string when Chris picked it up and started doing some crazy rhythmic stuff and popped a string. I'm waiting for the day when Chris picks up a fiddle on stage and plays something with Sara. The crowd would get a real kick out of that!

Ever since I read about her and that fiddle you made, I've been looking for her to play it in concert! But I think the last concert I was at, she just played the 4 string. I really wanna hear the difference in tones. And you know what? i had no idea that Chris could play fiddle....this band never ceases to amaze me.....

:-)) So THAT'S what they were talking about!! Sara and Chris went on about that in KC last August. I think I wrote about it in my review (KC 8/26 - Three Alarm Fire Show).

chris playing fiddles he is the one playign all the stings in the back of should have know better....
sara's 5 string.. last i talked to her, she was wanting to let the fiddle open up a little more before playing it live... it usually takes a violin at least a coupel months- a few years to get really warm- and then it continues to break in for the next 100 years..
as for tone.. it has a nice full tone.. especially on the low c her other fiddle is odler , and more broken- in tone.. but her 5 string has a very cool voice of it's own.... if i remember.. alittle on the more mellow side than her current fiddle... hard to remember each fiddle's personality, with all the violins i have played recently....
martin and i have a tenative instrument testing session sometime scheduled..... :D

a 5th string? i've never even heard of that before. how does that work? i mean i know how it works but what does it add to the fiddle that a 4 string doesnt have, besides another string?:confused:

the body is wider, = more mellow tone. mmmm mmmmmm i hate harsh sharp fiddles..
instead of gettign down to a g - you can go down an extra 5th.. down to viola range. the low C [8va above a cello/] and curve on the bridge is a little less slpped, and the strings are a little closer together.. 10 mm on the bridge spacing between the 4 normal ones, then 11 mm between the c and the g..
