Today I got the best gift ever ever ever!!! My drama teacher knows how much I love Nickel Creek, and how bad I want to play mandolin, but how I have no money to get one, or rent one. So today he brought in his mandolin for me to start learning on!!! Yippie!!!!! He showed me a few cords and such, but I was wondering if ya'll could recommend some good beginner books to look into. Just very simple complete beginner type stuff. I would love this very very much!! Ya'll have a great day, I am off to dink around with my mandolin!!!

Bert Casey's book and CD combo is pretty good. Once you're through that one, go get Chris's video.
Enjoy!

Yes, Bert is your friend! [lolol] I'm halfway through the playing section and it's been awesome :) If you get Chris' video soon, even though it's advanced for ya now, check it out... he's got great tips on postioning, holdling the pick & that kinda stuff that's much easier to see than read. Also about halfway through the video he teaches scales, which you can start on right away. They REALLY help me with reach, stretch, and strength. I do 'em every day :D

I was pleased to see when, after a month of working on my own, with those 2 sources, I went to have a lesson, and my instructor was very happy with the techniques I'd been working on... gave me a little adjustment on pick attack but that was it.

Congrats on getting your hands on the coolest instrument ever!!
