View Full Version : Chris' mando case
Hey, does anyone know what kind of mando case Chris has? Man that thing looks bombproof!! (it also doubles as his footstool LOL) I was just curious. I dunno if that's a question I'd waste on asking him if I get the chance at the next show LOL... but I'd like to know :)
wow... 37 views and no one knows? [lolol] I guess if I really wanna know I'll have to ask. I wonder if that falls into the dumb question category [lolol]
...probably.

I don't think it's a dumb question. If you find out let me know, my triples as my music rack, and footstool, (although I really am trying to break that last habit, my fiddle case works sooo much better, it's just too thick) so a hard case would be great for me. I have a hard one, but it's not a great one.

And the answer issssssssss....
It's a Pegasus case. They're made in Scotland, custom made to order. They don't give a price list, but I found one on the web for $450. So up there, but not ridiculously so. (I can't quite justify that for my $500 mando [lolol] but when you're shelling out thousands of dollars for the mando of your dreams, I can definately see it being worth it)
And Chris either didn't think it was a stupid question or he was polite enough to not let on that he did [lolol]

Wow, now in 100 years when I finally get on the Dudenbostel waiting list, and another 100 when I actually can afford one, I know what case to get! Thanks!!

Hey Adyn,
did you notice that he still uses it as a footstool at the concerts. It still serves a double purpose.
PJ
[lolol] Yes, I did notice that ;) At the Hanford show, it was right at my eye level LOL, so I got a good look at it and that's what got my curiosity up. Gotta protect those mandobabies LOL, and get a cool lookin' footstool while yer at it!
Though at Berkeley, he didn't have it... I think it got forgotten... not like it affected his playing at all, but he seems happier with his dude right up in his lap... case plus the patented one foot on the other (hey it works! LOL I do it when I can't get enough height from whatever I'm putting my feet on... I have short lil legs, though... not a problem shared by Chris! [lolol])

That's funny. I find myself doing the same thing but I don't have short legs.[think har
Mabey it's because my left leg is actually shorter than my right (medically proven).
Chris used his case/footstool at both the Portland and Seattle shows though.

i think it is the same reason classical guitarist's use a foot prop..
better angle on the legs to support the instrument
As an update to this, a year later almost LOL... I had a Pegasus case made last year, I've had it since august, and I LOVE it. It's perfect!! Extremely durable, very comfortable to carry and supports the mandolin amazingly. Great headstock and body support. (I've noticed many cases put extra pressure on the neck)
And another usless bit of trivia, Chris has 2; Dude #5 travels in a black peg case, and #14 in a white one :)

Yeup, I remember noticing that at a concert. Nothing like splurging. :D But if you think about it, its definitly not splurging when you see whats in it.
And I know what you mean about pressure on the neck with some cases. I don't close my case all the way due to that. Granted I don't carry it around like that, but when its unused (which sadly has been a bunch lately) its not closed.
It's not splurging when they are $30,000 mandos [lolol] and also happen to be how you make a living, eh?
But yeah for most folks that'd be a lot. I had to hem and haw a bit about whether it was worth it for a $3,000 mando... it's like a 15% insurance poilcy I figure hahah. Now that I have it and have seen how awesome they are at protecting your mandobaby... there's no doubt in my mind, more than worth it :D

LOL. Is that a hint? I do actually read things before I reply to them [lolol]
Perhaps I should have posted...
Yes, it's not splurging... blah blah blah.
I wasn't giving ya a hard time, promise ;) Just agreeing with the assement that what for most folks would be splurging for Chris is certainly not :)

Hey Adyn...Thanks SO much for posting those pictures- they ROCK! I have been in contact with Sam about getting my own Pegasus. However, I was concerned because the pictures on the website obviously DO NOT do the cases justice!!! I am also getting the purple velvet. I havent decided on shell colour yet, but I was thinking the dark blue-grey. Wow, I'm just so impressed now! lol Sam should pay you for advertising!
:D Thanks guys! Yeah, Sam does amazing work. And he's wonderful to work with too!! I loooooove purple, so it suits me quite well :D... and the black, well I fell in love with Chris's black peg, I just think they look super slick LOL. I've seen other color combos that are great too... the tartan interiors totally rock!!!
Oh and if you're going for the purple, the photo w/o the mandolin is more true to the actual color... the one with the mando looks too blue-ish. It's a nice deep purrrrty purple.
Glad ya liked the piccies, happy to share :)

Hey Adyn....Thats a Weber Yellowstone, right? Ha- thats funny! We must have the exact same taste in mandos! I'm about to buy a new mando (and peg case w/ purple velvet, as i stated earlier) and I'm looking at Weber Yellowstone with an extended fingerboard (like the Fern) and the abalone/white MOP flowerpot design. I'm also looking at a Gibson F5-G or having a custom built by BRW. Either way, I'm not too into the traditional tobacco burst look, I really like cremona bursts. So, do you recommend the Weber? Is it a custom?
