How many other homeschoolers are there on this board???
I've been homeschooling since the fourth grade - so I like to refer to myself as a fourth grade dropout!!! *stands up proudly* :D LOL!!!
Hmm - maybe Nickel Creek should be the official band of all homeschoolers!! WAHOO!!!!!!!

I wasn't homeschooled myself, but my cousins were. I wish I could homeschool my kids. The way schools are today, you never know what they're being exposed to. It would be nice to be able to control that to an extent.

up until this school year I was in Catholic School, and now I'm in a Catholic Homeschool...since it WAS my junior year, I'm planning on getting my diploma this way...probably better too because my old school's tutition is about $6,000 per year and that's not including the money for gas (let's just say it's about $400 a month because I live 40 miles away)

I've been homeschooling since 10th grade, I'm a senior now. My brother and I went to a private school, but they raised the tuition, and did a principal switch, so we left....long story. Anyway, my cousins homeschool now too, and they like NC too!

I was in homeschooling after 5th grade with a couple of friends, but it fell apart after a few months becuase our teacher had to move. I wish I could of continued becuase I learned so much and it was fun:) . But after that I had to go to catholic school for two years[sob] [sob] [sob]

jineux, don't complain about grey cold ohio!! Too soon it'll be 99 degrees 100% humidity, melting ohio!!
As for topic...I think that homeschooling has kinda helped make me what I am. If I had stayed in my old school, I would be a completely different person. I've kinda become more myself than my friends, for example, I don't care if I'm one of the few who like NC, or concentrate too much on music lately, if they don't like it, they'll get over it. Whereas before, I would be more of a crowd follower, and keep my true opinions to myself. (Which still has to be done, but I am a little more outspoken now, and I don't let people walk all over me.)
Ok, my on topic was more than my off, I feel better now.

I agree, I think just about everyone who has been through some kind of homeshooling has had a positive experience and are typically more unique. One of my brothers friends in high school had a really bad time in school and had alot of disipline problems(i think he hit a teacher when he was in 9th grade) but once he started home schoolong he was completly mellow and a really nice guy. I think it might have been a bad enviroment...i dunno? anyways homeschooling is good.:p

I wasn't homeschooled, but it's sort of a long-standing debate between my husband and I. I really am interested in it for our children (we don't have any yet, but want them ASAP), and he's not convinced. So, it's great to see a thread devoted to the topic by people who have experienced it.

Oh man I SO hear you nkl_crk_freek. In school, I was kinda the perfect student, and just did everything to impress everyone. It's really scary to think of the path I was headed on. Either totally burning on and turning to drugs or something in high school, I know it - or staying on that path, up to the point of going to the right college, marrying the right person, the whole thing . . . *shudders* scary scary scary . .. But I like ME now a lot better :D Glad you're doing better like this too!!! *big hugs* Oooo - I need to work on the getting walked on thing. I have a brilliant knack for getting involved in one sided relationships [bang]

I am the BIGGEST homeschooler supporter. I was homeschooled 6-12 and graduated a straight A student, and my 16 year old sister just got her diploma as well  For my siblings and I it helped us to all grow as our own people, we benefitted from drawing closer to our family, association outside of those in our age group alone, we weren't under as bizarre of peer pressure as in the public school systems (and yes while pressure pressure is EVERYWHERE, the work place, the home, the streets.. the public school system and a building full of kids just really exacerbates the effect) and we got more education out of our education.I could go off on a looooong tangent but will just say, while some loved their public school experience, my siblings and I have benefitted greatly from our at home learning :D

I working on that right college thing right now. I don't want to go to college anymore, but I know I should. My dad would prefer my marrying the right person, but I just don't want to do that any time soon!! But, yeah, I definitely, oh, I don't know how to say this, found myself? (Does that sound too cheesy?) I know my own strengths and weaknesses better, and actually have gotten better at dealing with people.

Glad for the support people!!!
Aw Cassie I am SO sorry . .. I'm trying to look at colleges right now too [eek!!] and no matter what, DON'T give in to the marrying the right person thing - I know I am a totally hopeless romantic (but my parents give me the reason to be), but I totally agree with Natalie Maine of the Dixie Chicks, don't settle for anything less than the fairytale, cuz if you love the person enough you'll make it work . . . And college I guess isn't as big of a deal, I mean, if we hate the college we can probably still get SOMETHING good out of it, right?? Or at least coast through for a few years . . . I mean it's not permanent, right?? EEERRRGG!!! hehehe
Sorry I'm kind of going off about these things, just feel pretty strongly about it. Do you need to [splat] your Dad?? LOL!!!! And NO finding yourself doesn't sound too cheesy - or at least, well Im a cheesy drip but at least I'm not alone!!! hehehehehe!!
And I love Sean's quote about homeschooling - that he was social with music!! YES!!! LOL!!!

I've been homeschooled since third grade and I've enjoyed it for the most part. I think it can be a good idea IF you're parents know what they are doing. Fortunately, mine did. However, I know these two highschoolers that are homeschooled, and they are dumber than a bag of hammers (my favorite quote from O Brother Where Art Thou). ;) Anyway, they don't know anything because their parents didn't know the first thing about teaching them.
Also, I think once you get in highschool, you should try to take as many classes as you can outside of the home. All throughout highschool, I've taken most (pretty much all) of my classes outside of the home. My mom still made the decisions about my classes and teachers, and I was able to really learn everything I should know and I feel fine about going to college. I mean, parents can't teach you EVERYTHING you need to know, plus it's hard having your mom or dad teaching you all the time. I really respect my mother for doing all she did for me, but not all parents are like that. This is where I think, homeschooling can be bad. So, if you're thinking about homeschooling your kids, make sure you can be committed to doing it. I think education should be a top priority in our lives, and it's important that we teach our children properly.
Don't think that by this I'm against homeschooling, quite the contrary. I love it and think it's great. I went to privet school for 3 years and it was awful!!! It was so clickish and uppity, I would have preferred public school (but they are not in very good shape now) over privet. I actually talked to Sara about it one time and she was saying how her privet school, that she and Sean went to, was just like that. Very clickish, and she and Sean were glad to go.
Anyway, just some thoughts. I'm glad to know there are a good bit of people on here that have been homeschooled. It's pretty cool.

LOL Cassie!! If you're BOTH always right even when wrong, and y'all disagree - gee sounds like a fun house  LOL!!!
Cool post RayBabe. Nice to hear some actual opinons - I'll agree - although maybe not on all your points, I definately agree it needs to be a parents top priority. I ALSO think it should be top priority or a parent, even if you can't (or don't want to) homeschool. When I was in public school, my Mom was very involved in my education. But I was totally out of touch with my family's life in school, and we moved a lot so I missed some things, cuz different schools have different cirriculum. I don't think it was til I was out of school we realized the problems I was having there, as far as thinking for myself. If someone didn't tell me exactly what page to go read I had NO CLUE what to do or how to find information . . .erg . . . I pretty much teach myself, use self-guiding books - and it's kinda cool cuz I have to understand what I'm learning and what Im getting out of it. Nice to have both point of views, may not work with everyone but it makes me feel more confident to know what I've done . . . So Sara and Sean went to private school before homeschooling?? I just assumed public . .. my Mom was wondering what grades they dropped out at . . .

I have been homeschooled since the second grade, and it was cool... for a while. I've had some really great experiences as a result of being homeschooled, but I just don't think my parents are equipped to homeschool me, partly for the reason that I'm just around my mom too freakin' much. She knows EVERYTHING that goes on in my life. I can't even post on this website without her asking me what I'm doing. It's so frustrating!!![bang] But, I agree with RayBabe, it can be a good thing. Actually, I was talking to Sara about it and she told me that she is planning on homeschooling her kids. I think she would be great at it, she wouldn't be overbearing like some we know...not saying who!! Chris and Sean both had positive things to say on homeschooling, as well, but I just don't think that I could handle it if I didn't take all of my classes outside of my home. Not to bash homeschoolers or the idea of homeschooling, but it's just not as flawless as some portray it.
nkl_crk_freek
03-10-2003, 10:22 AM
Homeschooling is far from flawless. I enjoy it, and it has been good for me recently, but when I first started I almost flunked. I don't recommend Algebra II unless you're an Einstein level genius. Or Chemistry. [think har But some people aren't meant to homeschool, my brother for instance.
LOL Cassie!! If you're BOTH always right even when wrong, and y'all disagree - gee sounds like a fun house LOL!!!

Sara said that they were just so busy with music, that they really had no other choice, it was too difficult for them. They had missed a lot of school and it wasn't working out. She said Sean was in 10th grade and I'm almost positive she said she was in 6th when they dropped out. Chris started homeschooling in 3rd grade but he had skipped 1st because of something in his school. It was apparently really hard for him socially.
Kathy Thile and Karen Watkins each wrote an article about their children and it talked about homeschooling and much more. If you go to the Articles and Reviews forum, you can find the articles there. They were VERY interesting.

Hi guys, Ive been homeschooled since preschool and i looove it. I think homeschoolers have more freedom to do things in school than public/private school kids. Like if we're sick we can just sit on the couch and do school :D but then again we don't get snow days! I went to a homeschool convention this past weekend and the guy who was speaking (Mike Farris) has 10 kids, all homeschooled and the oldest is 26 (ish?) and the youngest is 6. I don't know how they do that!

Thanks for the info Brittany!! I'll have to go read those articles . . . .

I was home schooled my entire life, as were by 8 siblings.
I wouldn't have had it any other way, especially since my mom is a former private school teacher. I would definetely say I had a great education, and it allowed to to graduate right after I turned 16.
I'm in college now, at the University of Maine at Augusta. Life is good, and so is home-schooling. :D

Glad you agree TenaciousDLover!! I remember once when I was like fourteen, Mom was going through reading outloud a list of skills I was supposed to learn, and I just had no idea what the stuff was by name. Teaching myself, I have to know what I'm getting out of it - really helpful. And it's definately a skill you use all the time - my Mom and I were talking last night about the most important things to learn being basic communication (three r's, ya know), and then how to find out something when you don't know it, since that's why you learned to communicate . . .

Another homeschooler stands up and takes a bow! LOL
Graduated homeschooler, actually. I'm 25 now, and I was homeschooled from 2nd grade on up. My experience was a bit different than others I know, in that my dad is a pastor and he and my mom have always opened up the schooling to kids in our church. The most other families we ever had was probably 3 or 4. I graduated with my best friend... a class of two. :D
I plan to homeschool my kids, but when they get older, I will definitely utilize the option of sending them to career tech classes and even some high school classes so they can learn things I won't necessarily be able to teach. And I will hook them up with music, summer sports, art camps, ... whatever they are interested in.
I live in an area that has a LOT of homeschoolers, and they have formed a network where different parents teach groups of kids in different subjects (one mom, for example, is a college math teacher and meets weekly with a homeschool group to help them with that area of their studies).
My brothers both played homeschool basketball, the younger one from junior high to his senior year, when they went to nationals. Being a part of the team was a really great socializing opportunity for him and our whole family... I was unofficially the BIGGEST Traverse City Bulldogs fan in the entire universe!!!! :-))
Anyway, I am in college now; I did things a little differently, going right out of high school into a nearly 6 year career as a newspaper writer/photographer and foregoing the whole college thing. My other three siblings all either have been or are in college, though, and my older sister is a nurse and working on her PH.D.
I love that Nickel Creek also homeschooled... :)

after a horrible time in school my twin and I were taken out of that and have been home-schooled ever since we were 13. i started college last september and i have an intense love/hate relationship with it.
the most common opinions i encounter when people find out i was homeschooled, is that they think you don't do anything (which makes me so mad). i'm a A grade student, so it hasn't done me any harm.

Wow, this is an old thread. Last time I posted in it was 2003. I think.
Since then, I still haven't been homeschooled *wink wink*....yet I'm still in school. Apparently I just can't get enough or something. I've had a total of a two year break since first grade. Awesome. And I'm 27.

I'm homeschooled and like it. I've been homeschooled all of my school years. I pretty much have taught myself everything.
The only thing I don't like is the homeschooler image. Though, I do debate and every time I walk into the room filled with homeschoolers I want to go over there and take them someplace decent to shop.
By the way guys, NEVER wear a bright pink dress shirt and a pastel purple tie...
I take classes at a homeschool co op like advance biology and stuff. I also take classes at the local community college. When I first went there everyone was shocked to find out I was 15.
Now I'm 17 and looking at college. any suggestions? I'm thinking about law...

I've always been homeschool. I love it. :D I would probably be lost in public school. Most of my friends are in public school but I have a few friends who are home schooled too. It's nice to know that I'm not the only home schooler here.

I've never been homeschooled. I would if my friends were home schooled with me, but, that defeats the whole point.
Im friends with everyone, and every teacher! ha!
