I was fortunate to see the show at the Alladin Theater in Portland last Saturday night and it was simply astonishing. It has been several years since I last saw Mike play with Grisman and I was very impressed. I have always thought of him as a fantastic musician who is also a wonderful composer. However, the level of his playing, his sense of pace and volume, and the sheer creativity of it was amazing.
And Chris, I don't think there is any question that nobody has ever played the mandolin as well as him. To be so accomplished at his age...he was born with the gift that so few posess. Quite simply, he is the Hendrix of the mandolin.
The evolution in his playing is something to see. While he played at a high level on Leading Off, and continued to develop more of a unique and bold style throughout his recording career, his playing with Mike was astonishing. He has it all--speed, taste, timing. His runs flowed like a mountain stream.
And the improvisation....wow. At one point, Mike said that, on the latter part of the tour, they will look at each other and say what was that? They go places together that no mando players have ever gone before.
Do yourselves a favor and buy the new album. Its fantastic.
And Deborah, if you are reading this, please give me a call!
