One of the best songs on the cd, Sara Watkins really knows how to sound like a bitter lady. Her voice is different from anyone I've ever heard. I always wondered why she didnt write her own songs. She's a chick, all chicks have issues, and issues make for fab songs. :D

That's one of my favorite songs on the cd too. I always wondered why she didn't write some of the music. Her has a very haunting sound to her voice. Maybe next album she might write something?

I absolutely LOVE this song!! every part is amazing, all of the different part of the harmonies and just everything, especially the part when Sean says all alone in my kitchen :o
This is the song I hope they pick for their next single!

I love I Should've Known Better. It is one of my absolute favorites on the CD. And I agree, her voice is very haunting in the song. Of course we all know Sara isn't really bitter, so to hear her sing something different is what makes it unique.

I was thinking the same thing! How much I would really love to see Shouldv'e Known Better in a video. I think it should be something a little unconventional for NC, nt their usual video. Something a little more creative and artistic, like maybe in costumes instead of street clothes (like Westen theme? I keep thinking of the movie Maverick [think] ) And I don't know, I hope its their next single and they make an awesome video for it, (which they probably will, because they are so awesome!)

i'm gonna go out on a limb on this one but i don't think they'd wear any more western wear. already been down that road and back.

Yeah, Western clothes was cute on them when they were little kids, but now, it's not exactly them.

NC in western gear? That's like seeing KISS go back to wearing makeup. Oh, wait...

i feel a video for should have... would be cool if it was set in a trailer park, on a hot sticky clamy evening with golden and red tones but then again what do i know?

I think a good video concept for the movie would be courtly love.
17th century clothes, very artsy! Kinda like the Decamoron, but more modernized! The song is such a different kind for them, the video should be out there too . . . that is, if it is a single.

This is how I envision the video:
Sara sitting in an old 70's-ish style yellow kitchen with yesterday's mail on the table in front of her alongside a cup of cold coffee. The kitchen is all by it's self, nothing else is around it. Except, you see out of the window Chris and Sean playing in the rain. Then somewhere along in the video the kitchen catches on fire. Sara's too busy singing and being all depressed to realize it. After the whole kitchen is on fire, she steps out into the nothing that surrounds the yellow kitchen and joins Chris and Sean in the rain. That's all I've come up with so far... I hope you like it. :)

Very creative with the rain and the kitchen on fire, but it sounds a little like the Dido video where they destroy the whole house around her. Who knows? I'm sure NC would come up with something fantastic. I kinda liked that trailer park theme too, very bitter and depressing.

Very emotional . . . and deep. Kind of Nickel Creek's style. But I think the song is more bitter then sad, angry at the situation. It's more of a break-up-your-a-jerk song, then I-Love-you-dont-leave-me song.

I have the whole video already planned... It starts with Sara driving in her car for the first verse. She looks in her rear view mirror and sees Chris playing mando in the back seat. She stops at a light, and Seans playing on the curb. During the chorus, she pulls into her driveway and walks into her house, into her kitchen which I picture sort of like Okie's vision, retro. When she says if you want your things, they're on the front step, it shows a box on the stoop. SHe would walk into the living room and Chris and Sean would be playing. Sara would walk by a shelf, pick up a violin and play her part very non-shalont. Chris would do his squirrel noise... yes, I have no life. I really like the fire idea, and it should be the same house as the This Side video.

Not to sound conceited, but I tend to be very on in knowing when a song'll be a hit, and if NC realeased I Should've Known Better, I'm purty darn sure that'd it be a hit *nods*

Now, I think if they did make a video for it that it could be something like this...You see the outside of a coffee bar/shop and the door opens and the camera walks in. Sara's sitting by the coffee bar, and then notices Sean & Chris on a stage on the corner and walks over to them (just when the mando and guitar do that thing, you know what I'm talking about). She joins them and starts singing the first part of the verse, and when the fiddle comes in, she picks it up and looks at the door, seeing the ex walk in - she focuses on him and sings your love meant trouble... and when it comes to the chorus, it's just the band doing their thing.

Then when the second verse comes in, the camera pans on the table with well an old cup of coffee and yesterday's mail and it goes back and forth between Sara and the table for that line. Then jumps to Chris and his fingers...and goes between his and Sean's fingeres until the line if you want your things they're on the front step And in that line the ex tries walking on over working his charm in trying to get Sara back. But she sings the line to him like she's shot him with words and he turns around like whoa.

Again, the second chorus is filmed much like the first and when the fiddle comes in again it becomes quiet hazy and everything fades into white. Then it quickly flashes to the mandolin, guitar, mandolin, guitar....mando solo and we see Chris and Sean in a white room while Sara's off to the side looking out of a window singing all alone in the kitchen and Sean comes over to join her while Chris sees a cat and duck and starts talking to it. Right before the final sqwalk Sean & Sara look at him like What are you doing man?!? and we go back into the coffee shop.

Then the ex is now hitting on some new girl when Sara sings Don't know what this love is for and they both look over at Sara. She makes eye contact and sings All I know is I, don't want it anymore and when it comes to the final chorus, the band then walks up on stage and performs until the end of the song. Then when the music fades out, they all look down and Sara looks up straight into the camera with that look of who's sorry now?

I think that this song would be a great hit!

I think, probably, the music video would be so out there no one would understand it! They could be, like, playing golf, or eating cheese puffs while singing the freakin' song! I think that a good video would be them on the beach, since that's what they probably do all the time . . . body boarding. Like, a vacation from the ex, type thing, that all girls do . . . at least I like taking a mind break at the beach when bad things happen.

A beach video would be so COOL!!!

I think it's so funny. Earlier I mentioned the word video and we all went off on this artistic spree! It's great seeing all these different ideas for a music video. I really hope that they release Should've Known Better as a single and it hits big, then make a video because They only have five so far (six if you include the appearance of Chris and Sara in Dolly's Shine). I dunno, I just really enjoy this band and would love to see another video. Hats off to NC!:D

Wow. Everyone has great ideas! I love them all. Maybe we all should join together and direct their next videos?;)

That would be freakin' cool . . . and a little crowded! But, i believe that a 3 minute video would turn into a three hour free-for-all, if all of these ideas were brought to the group!

They should look at this if they ever have an inspiration block, i doubt, however that would happen to any one of them. They're too brilliant to have a block.

I seriously think we should send these in to them. Ya know, just to see what they think about our interpretations on the song. Who knows, maybe they'll like one of them a lot then turn it to a video. ;)

Of course, then they would have to thank us . . . Hmmmm! I could just see it now, the video being put together, then at the end thank you to the Nickel Creek Fan Club Forum for all the great ideas and help! If only we could know if they read this thing!:) :) :) :) :) :)

Redaries, I just realized after reading your last post that you are from Seattle. I just came back from there on a Seminar at The Radisson Hotel and I had a chance to visit Downtown. I loved it! You live in a great city!

When NC did the live appearance on Later with Jules Holland in the UK, this was the song they performed, and I preferred that version (slightly different) to the one on the album. I'll be a total dissenter anyway and say that it's ok, but pales into insignificance compared to The Beauty and the Mess. So there. [run]

ah! i can see sara in a black tank top and messy hair in a bun, sweating even though its 9 in the morning, and theres yellow sunlight coming from the window above the sink, and shes sitting in her trailer in a kitchen at a retro table, u know with like chrome edges and a fake marble colored top, overlookng her cup of coffee as(been a long time comin and the cards were stacked) her ex is playing poker in the living room to her left with some guys in white wifebeater shirts so she starts singing the song, and after the first chorus she gets mad and throws her coffee and the mail all over their card table and her ex gets up but is about to like, hit her or something but she runs down a hall and throws a box of clothes onto the porch and starts yellin at her ex and then she drives away to a little sticky diner where chris and sean are just in a booth playing their mando and guitar(this should be about the time when chris does his chicken noise) and she sits down in the booth and they finish the song just looking around the diner and then right at the ending (sank like a stoooooooooooone) she looks out and sees her ex driving past in a pick up truck with a different girl.

but then again i cant really see NC doing a role-playing type music video.. i mean, look at all of their videos. juss them singing and playing. true nickel creekness. :p
