I was bored.
Pick your fave from the NC albums. I included Big Sam Thompson just because I thought I deserved to be in there.
NOTE: You may choose MORE THAN ONE!! However, please DO NOT choose ALL of them. Be honest.

I thought this was gonna be reeeally hard to choose. Then I saw Smoothie. Serious duh for me. Didn't even come to MIND when I thought of instrumentals ...
This song is just SO amazing - all the little things in it, the personality, the energy. And that first lick, it just sounds like a road trip!! ;) Very Allman Brothers, but not as cold as some of their stuff sounds (well at least their recorded stuff. just heard pieces of one of their lives albums and was really into it. I didn't even recogonize them!!)
So, this is definately my fave instrumental!! SMOOTHIE RULES!!! :D

Question are we going to limit instrumentals to only the ones in which all of the members participate or can other songs from Chris' and Sean's cds count? B/c truly truly after Big Sam I'd have to say Eureka! without a doubt!! And maybe somone can answer this but at your shows you go to, when Big Sam is played and they get to the fast part, do they really rock that song out like they do the fox, ode the butterfly, and house of tom bom? b/c while it seems like the music is fast enough, the band really seems calm when they get to that part. thats the only thing i'd change about them performing it. maybe they have to really focus on that song but i was just wondering if matt the fidd, web ma'am or anyone for that matter knew if their stage antics are subdued for big sam for a specific reason. it could have been that time at the concert i saw them and they were tired by then but just wondering.

No, those don't count. Hence the words ...from the NC albums. I worded it that way on purpose. Mainly because I don't have the solo albums and don't know what's what. Add to that the fact that if I added the instrumentals from the solo albums, I'd be listing everything but 1 frickin' song (right?). And that would be just like saying What's your favorite track from a solo album, which I care nothing about considering I don't own them. Besides, you have a max of 10 choices when making a poll. I then added, I included Big Sam Thompson just because I thought I deserved to be in there, because it does.
That's pretty much the jist of things.

Definently, without a doubt, Pastures New and Big Sam Thompson. Exactly why? I don't know. It's just something about them that draws you into them. Both beautiful songs.

Okay thx for the clarafication there bryan.
K, I'm gonna get a lot of flack for this I'm sure but when has that ever stopped me? Anywho, am I the only one who isn't in love with Pastures New? I had made the comment in another post that I didn't think many people liked it, simply b/c I didn't see it mentioned as a favorite a lot of times. Now thx to this voting and several ppl's thoughts it seems like everyone loves it. So am I in the minority about not being crazy over that song? I think it is pretty sure, but kinda strikes me as repeatative and I'd listen to it especially if I wanted to go to sleep but maybe thats the good points, hmm. Just wanted to open up some more thoughts. I'm not saying that a song has to be flashy and fast to be good. I am not saying that by no means. An example of the opposite would be The Birth and Big Sam can seem kinda repeatative too. Anywho, just probing for more thoughts. Make sure you direct your flack at me and say what you mean. Having to infer is so problematic. HAHA.

1 - I hate when people say anywho. Two words for why: annoying cliche
2 - You're nuts!! Sara's violin work is so eloquent, I sometimes forget it's the same band playing the piece.
I'd say...
1. Big Sam ~ was my first instrumental favorite of theirs and still is!! It's gets to me, I love the way it builds and changes, and completely rocks at the end
2. Ode to a Butterfly ~ This song always amazes me, especially after seeing it broken down on Chris' video
3. Smoothie Song ~ never fails to put me in a good mood, that's powerful stuff!! Heh heh.
My all time favorite is Stranded in Kodiak, though not a NC song, it was at least written when they were all togther! I won't ramble about this song as I have aleady done so in several other threads. :p Oh and Raining at Sunset would be up there too. Ok I'll stop before I list everything Chris has written [lolol]

Why so little support for Tom Bombadil? That was the first NC tune I ever heard, so I might be a bit biased, but I really think it's one of the best that they have! It's just a really fun tune, that's a lot more complex than you realize after the first listen. Big Sam Thompson blew me away the first time I heard it. It's just a beautiful melody in the aire (first part) and I love how flows so easily into the reel (second part)! The Smoothie Song has never been one of my favorites. I don't find the melody or harmony all that insteresting, and there's not enough else in that tune to really save it. I think that tune could be great if Chris included some development of the main themes, rather than just have a little bit of improvising.
Tunes not on this list that deserve some recognition: Raining at Sunset, Ferdinand the Bull, Song for a Young Queen, Opening Song (does that have a real title?)

Well, I voted for the smoothie song, but after listening to my Nickel Creek cd again, I think I like Ode to a Butterfly better, and then whatever track 8 is (can't remember the title and didn't have my cd case to check) runs a close second. Track 8 makes me think of Titanic for some reason[think har .

Bryan, I'm glad you narrowed it down for us broad-minded individuals ;) After all, it would be quite the huge poll if you included the songs from the solo albums. Which, by the way, you shoudl get!![eek!!]
I picked the Smoothie Song, cause it just displays their incredible talent so very well, and it has a very catchy hook. Good stuff. I love the guitar solo. Ahh!! [noise]
Good poll work, Bryan.

Yes - the guitar solo is incredible!!! I always do a little air-fingering to that - just to pretend I can play it!! ;) Sean's timing and control is just...freaky really!! hehe And I loooove after the bazookie (sp?) solo, and Sara's violin sounds like she's trying to calm Chris down - that little high note he hits on the bazookie after that just sounds like a little kid about to explode . ..
hmm - I hope that made sense to SOMEBODY besides my family . . .

I am going to have to list some other songs as well.
The Fox- Now I know this isn't an instrumental totally, but in concert when they get past with the 20 minute mark I certainly consider jams to be an instrumental
For All It's Worth- Dueling Mandolins, need I say more?
St. Anne's Reel - definately one of my favorite Irish trad. tunes.

I love St. Anne's Reel!
Another one I failed to mention in my past post is Smoothie Song. Oh, and how could I forget Ferdinand the Bull? And Song for a Young Queen, and Ode to a Butterfly and, and... all the other ones! :)

Initially I voted for Big Sam, but after eading all of these post I'm confused as to which I like best. I really, really like Smoothie Song too. I'm terribly indecisive. Anyway, I thought I'd add one of my all time favorites. It's the 'jam' that they now do live in the middle on Lighthouse's Tale. It blew me away the first time I heard it.

i said big sam because the first time i heard it was live and it just blew me away. it's just an amazing piece. smoothie is right up there also...it's so catchy i almost forget it's them--it certainly makes a great opener for concerts and the cd. as always tho, it's such a hard choice...and i think cross the bridge should have definately made the list!
