I must say it's very cool. hip.
The music and the way Sean sings reminds me somewhat of a Ben Folds-esque genre. The music is different, but you can certainly tell that it's Sean when he solos. It's great.
I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but the instrumental N.M.I. is great. It's like a sunny-happy-spring-day-song. (That's really sappy, I'm sorry) :) Sara's fiddling on that song is very cool. Chutes and Ladders is great too! Overall, I'm very pleased.
So the music is different, but it's still great Sean Watkins music!
Enjoy!
Hey where are all the I LOVE SEAN!! fans???
Thought ya'll would be bustin in here to ramble bout the new album!! I just got mine. Cool stuff. Totally NOT Nickel Creek, but we expected that. It's prrrrretty pop-y, but I think we all knew that too. I like it more than I than I thought I would. The sample tracks somehow made his voice sound weak and warbly, which it's not at all on the CD.
So far the ones that jump out at me are On Ice, Chutes and Ladders, and Take it Away. I'll have to give it a few more listens before I do much reviewing though.
Go get it!! [lolol] Support the boy!! Heheh.

Adyn - just for you...
I LOVE SEAN! lmao - Seriously though, folks - 26 Miles is HOT! Hahah...That's what I've been saying all night. I just got it 3 hours ago, and started listening to it 30 minutes ago, but it is very good. I think my opinion of pop kinda differs from others, nowadays, when I think of pop I think of anything that sounds like it's fake - synthesized, whatever. 26 Miles reminds me of stuff I'd hear in a Coffee shop. Maybe I need to promote this CD to the local coffee shops...hmmm...
So far, the ones that really stick out to me - as in the ones that I've already just gone WOW! over - are, Locking Doors, Chutes & Ladders (I love the way the sax goes in), Hiding & Take It Away... I'd say more but I'm only now on 26 miles :)

HAEY, people!!!
In case you are wondering, yes, I am new... to the board, that is, not a new NC fan.
I just got 26 Miles like, 3 hours ago, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!!!!! I've listened to it the whole way thru twice already. Definitely not what I was expecting, but still. It really surprised me, but I guess that's like our Sean anyway, is it not?
SO far, my favorites are On Ice, Chicago, Hiding, Chutes and Ladders, 26 Miles, and Brick Window.
And PLEASE don't verbally beat me fo saying this, but SEAN LOOKS HOT. *winces, thinking about hurtful words that are gonna come in replies*
All in All, Sean Watkins is A WONDERFULLY KEWL musician, and 26 Miles just confirms that!!!!
PEACE!!!!

Wow, two posts from people who got the cd bought their cd 3 hours before posting...interesting...
I'd just like to know WHO dressed him in the ruffled shirt? That's just so wrong...
 I agree about that shirt. Though I normally try and refrain from those types of comments on this board LOL... I'm with ya on that one. It is... just... wrong. [lolol]
Also, MAJOR newsflash... my husband actually LIKES this album!! wow!!! (He really doesn't care for the Creek at all.. yes I know... I don't get it either [lolol] )

Is Locking Doors on '26 Miles' the same as the Locking Doors about Marvin ( or is it Melvin? ), the character on As Good As It Gets ? I don't have the album yet, so I don't know.
Nope. Both songs were part of the game where the Chris, Sean, (and Glenn, right?) had to write these songs with a given title. So Both Chris and Sean wrote Locking Doors songs and they are totally different. Sean's is currently becoming my fave of the album methinks ;)
If you want a good taste of what's on there and you haven't seen it already, check out the 26 Miles ecard (http://www.sugarhillrecords.com/ecard/seanwatkins/index.html) (the online samples are much higher quality than those I heard elsewhere) Plus you get to see Sean in his ruffly shirt [lolol]

You are all teasing me, making me jealous. I pre-ordered the thing so I would have it hot off the line . . . so I thought. When will it get here?! I cried as I took my postman by the collar.
I checked out the promo photos of Sean on the website devoted to 26 miles. I must say, I don't feel they capture him. Not like I know the man, but they seem a little too slick. I thought I should offer to be his photographer the next time around . . . something more down to earth. But, the man would be beautiful even if donning a moo-moo and a shower cap.
Can't wait to get the CD.

I agree Emily! :D I love the one where he's leaning against the wall and looking side-on to the camera.
You guys are teasing me too! I finally sorted out about getting a copy over from the US but I have to wait for my friend to get back from Memphis in 2 weeks time. Until then, I have only my Launch player to keep me happy.
I am being good and refraining from making a poll on the ruffly shirt [lolol]
I agree about the Ben Folds influence, also a few songs have quite the Beach Boys flair, which is cool as all heck ;)
So after constant play in my CD players for 2 days... I give this one 2 thumbs waaay up. I love the lyrics to just about everything... especially Brick Window, On Ice, and Through the Spring.
I am particularly fascinated with Locking Doors at the moment, I just love the blend of Sean, Glenn, and Sara's voices. Very, very good stuff ;)

Hello,
I also am commenting oh his outfit,
I started laughing so hard (no offense to Sean) but it looks so funny, I think he doesn't look comfortable, sort of in a way, I mean maybe his Photographer made him wear those and pose like that...... But whatever...It's not the pictures that matter right!? It the music! and the heart within......
I don't have it yet either, But maybe for my familys sake I wont get it until...well I've waited long enough.....But when I do [noise] ........[lolol]

[noise] This is me, one very happy listener...
THIS ALBUM ROCKS HOUSE!!!!!!!! It has had near constant play in my car since I picked it up the morning of April 8 (yes, I pre-ordered weeks in advance... ;) )
It's kinda funny, because my car CD player (a portable) stopped working about 2 weeks ago. Talk about bad timing!!! So being the prolific problem solver that I am, I promptly recorded the entire album on a good ol' cassette tape and have been using my car's tape player (for the first time since I got the car LOL):p to listen. I miss being able to skip back and forth CD style; I've become too impatient for the fast forward/rewind process involved in cassette tape listening.
Wow. Not like anybody cares about all that!
So the CD... Chicago is hands down my favorite track thus far, though there are several close seconds.
But Chicago it is, and for sentimental reasons over and above the fact that the tune is just so darn awesome.
My brother and sister live on Chicago's west side, and I have had the chance to explore the city several times since they moved there. My brother works at the Starbucks on Michigan Avenue... he served coffee to Tori Amos after one of her concerts.
Chi-town is an incredibly cool place, and Sean's lyrics totally fit what it would be like strolling down its windy avenues. Cold days there are especially wicked because of the lake front storm winds, particularly when you are standing around waiting for the el. BRRRRRRRrrrrrr!!!! they don't call it the Windy City for nothin'!!! :D
As for the rest of the CD, I love Hiding, Letters Never Sent, and especially Take It Away. I can totally relate to the messages in all three, especially Take It Away.
Overall, I was unsure about the album on my first listen, but it took me a lot less time to fall in love with it even than the This Side CD.
And I will weigh in about the pics on the album as well.... ditto on the ruffled shirt :) LOL My favorite is the one on the back, in B/W on a city street. Very cool.
So that's it from me!
Happy listening, everyone...
Betsy

26 Miles came to me today. I would have kissed my postman, but it was just sitting there in front of my door so I had no one to share my joy with, except for my dog who had eaten a container of Nestle Quick which I had stupidly left on the counter. He was so high, he forgot who Sean was. I almost disowned him.
26 miles. Straight to the top 5. Amazing. I don't know why, but I can't think anyone else who elicits that kind of emotional response from me through music. Except for my family. Anyone else get this way, or am I nutty? The man opens his mouth and I weep--or at least feel like weeping. There's a fire burning under that calm exterior.
26 Miles. It's beautiful. Nothing left to say.

Joce,
In my dreams--literally. Except if I had been taking the pictures the shirt would have been a cornflower blue button-down (yes, yes, to match his eyes) with NO ruffles. Who talked him into that? Can you imagine that conversation?
the unknown: You should where this man, it's really hip
Sean: I don't know, man, it has ruffles
unknown: chicks dig that stuff
Sean: I don't know . . .
Or maybe something like that. Silly man. Gotta love him.
btw, I hope you get the CD soon. I've played it so much that even Bo (my canine companion) is starting to sing along.

Just got it myself (from the wonderful people at Amazon!) and I'm really liking what I'm hearing.
'On Ice' stuck out straight away to me, I was hooked on the beginning vocal and then when the drums kicked in...man....it's great to hear his voice against that kind of rockier sound. It was almost like a Counting Crows song. I can totally see Adam Duritz doing a sterling cover of a lot of the songs on the album actually.
'Take it away' was really interesting. Just looking at the lyrics Take it away, make it OK, I was like oh man, don't let yourself down. But I don't know, just something with the music makes it really, really work. It's one of my favourites.
'Brick window' and 'Hiding' are up for my most favourite track awards to. I love the vibe and the whole package. Lyrically they really draw you in too. I have a feeling '26 miles' is going to be a grower. I wasn't too keen at first, but it keeps getting picked by the random button on the CD player and is working it's way into my heart!
I don't know about anyone else, but 'Chutes and ladders' left me exhausted! Lol.
I love the layout of the liner notes too, his little 'this is where this song came from' notes just make it that tad more personal and allow you to let the songs touch you in a different way.
A-mazing. Keep it coming Sean!

I, being the slacker of a Sean Watkins fan that I am, did not get my copy of the CD until today. I tried to get it last night and ended up being not so nice to the people at Wal-Mart for not having it. I had to wait until today and drive 30 minutes to Media Play (or the devils that sell their CDs for $20 as I like to call them) to get it. But it was well worth the drive.
I really really love this CD. It's so different from all the other music I've ever heard Sean do, and it's just so amazing. As a sax player, I really love every sax part in his songs... because saxophone is awesome.
I can't stop playing On Ice, which I would have to say is my favorite song on the album thus far. I've listened to the album about 3 times all the way through, but I've listened to On Ice 5 or 6 times. In close second is Hiding.
Anyone else notice the picture for Through the Spring? I just laughed because I was sorta disturbed... then I just thought it was funny. I love that song, though.
Chicago made me think of NYC and my experiences. I'm listening to that song now.
I just love this CD. I'm never going to shut up about it. My friends will hate me. *evil laughter*

Yeah, this CD is totally rockin' my face off (and rock is probably a more appropriate word, considering its departure from bluegrass). It's totally not Nickel Creek, but totally an awesome CD anyway. I haven't yet listened to it enough to REALLY be hit by the songs, but I definitely love On Ice, and I think Sarah's BGV makes Locking Doors chilling.
And I think that the pics of Sean in the liner notes are cheesy. I think he's so adorable (yeah, I know, so does like every other girl), but I much prefer him in the laidback button down that he was wearing when I saw them Fri night than some cheesy ruffled shirt. Just my two cents.

My second favourite......26 Miles
and then all of them..........................

What's with the comparison to Ben Folds, guys? I'm huge BF fan and I believe both are in a field of their own. Both are AWESOME musicians. Sean's better, though, really, 'cause his style is so much more fluid than Ben's. 26 Miles rocks and just got Let it Fall too. I love that song. It reminds me of my sister.

Yeah, good point. Ruffled shirts and making babies isn't really on topic here. We're supposed to be talking about how great the album is! [shock]
I think technically the ruffly shirt is fair game in this thread [lolol] it IS part of the liner notes, which is part of the album LOL
I think (ruffly shirt aside) it interesting that Sean (or some marketing people possibly) chose to go with a completely different look for him than we've seen with NC & LIF... apporpriate especially because the music is so different. Perhaps it's a side of Sean's own personalilty, perhaps marketing gimmick to catch the eye of swooning fangirls everywhere [lolol]... hey, don't knock it, they buy a lot of CDs! :D
Anyhow... I was a bit horrified with the promo pics (like, who's THIS guy?) But when I got the CD and listened to it, the lightbulb went on, and I gotta admit... it works! I mean can you see the normal Creeky Sean in his t shirt and normal hair in this alt-pop album? It's kinda like a superman/Clark Kent thing [lolol]
The lil bugger is still in my CD player most of the time... and I walk around singing misc. songs from it when nothings playing. I admire the lyrics more and more after each listen, dang the boy is good. And I gotta agree... I was a bit worried at the Take it away, make it ok at first... but it has the same quality to me that Hanging By a Thread does... in that the simple lyrics are just SO honest and heartfelt. Blunt and almost raw... I mean, we've all felt that way at some point, eh?
The one I've been mulling over the most lately is Carousel. It's probably the most mature of the themes... least I think so. It can also be interpreted in several ways, which I always think is cool.
monkeyjunkie
04-15-2003, 12:05 PM
I think I have said this once before, but you have opened it up again . . . that song makes me sob. I get all choked up. I know to well the emotion he expresses in this song--raw--that's a good word. Also, I think vulnerable. Sean mentions this himself--not wanting to be vulnerable--but in pouring out his soul he is. This album takes me on an emotional roller coaster--peaks and valleys--relating all to well. Feeling close to the music. Not like Sean will ever read this but . . .
Thank-you.
Another thing no one has mentioned (at least I don't think) is the ingenious arrangement of the songs. Can you think of a better song to open with than On ice? Songs 6-10 (climax build and resolve) melt into each other, perfect compliments of one another . . . and the end . . . Carousel--sad passionate timid ending with the string quartet--hope. Beautiful.
Can you tell I'm a fan?

Very interesting that he is using drum programming on a couple of songs. It almost reminds me of Riley Armstrong. The sax is a very nice touch to the album. When I first heard it and I didn't read the liner notes, I almost thought it was Jeff Coffin, but nevertheless the guy who did play on there was very talented. I am surprised that Chris wasn't on the album. I suppose he was recording the album with Mike at the same time. This album will grow on me, but it shall take time. I have only listened to it once straight through and if I give a couple more I will have picked my favorite songs

I have to say that Through the Spring is my favorite track on the record...simple and honest, with those Beach Boys-esque harmonies. In fact, I could listen to tracks 6-9 over and over again and not get tired of them.
Probably my favorite part of the entire record, though, is the bridge of Locking Doors with the strings...the color changes completely, but it compliments the song so well. And the way the tempo slows down for a second, then starts again and transitions back into the verse by just melting away with the single violin...very nice. :)
Anyone else have a favorite part of a song?

I love 26 Miles where the piano is playing... Something about it gives me cold chills...
Oh yeah, and the strings at the end of the song Carousel... beautiful...

Only one part? My answer: the whole CD. I love it, but Through the Spring really needs to grow on me.
I have two to add to my 'Favorite Tracks' list: Hiding and Locking Doors. ( Locking Doors especially! )

I agree with you! And for some reason...carousel is not my favorite either. I'm pretty sure it's because (seriously, i'm not joking) when I listen to it, I think about a carousel and I get a little queasy. But my favorite tracks are (not in order):
Hiding
On Ice
Locking Doors
26 Miles
Chutes and Ladders

I would have to say my fave part of a song would be EVERY PART OF CHUTES AND LADDERS!!!! I LOVE that song! Earlier today, when my aunt pickedme up from school, I took out my CD player, and slapped my headphones on, and immediately put on Chutes and Ladders. We had to go on the freeway, and going 70 miles an hour with that song blaring in my ears (which is not particularly good for my hearing, but...) REALLY gave me an adrenaline rush. It was all I could do to not scream out the window!!!![noise]
Has anyone else ever felt that kind of Sean High before??

Great question...Hard, but good. =)
1) The way 'On Ice' closes by repeating the opening lines...the quiet resolve closes the song nicely, but leaves me wondering about what it's really like to walk on ice throughout life.
2) The final verse of 'Hiding', when the harmony comes in perfectly on 'out of the darkness' and blends so well with Sean on the final word.
3) The place on 'Chutes and Ladders' where the sax and drums drop out, leaving the guitar all alone. It sounds as if the song has been stripped down to the essentials for several seconds...yet the essentials lack nothing. They are just as energetic as the rest of the song.
3.5) When all the instruments return.
4) Sara's harmony on 'Locking Doors'.
5) The place on 'Carousel' where 'the airplane comes' and transports it to a new level. ;)
etc...

Hmm, I can't pick just one part that I love either. :) The whole album is just amazing. Some highlights for me, though:
On Ice... right when the drums come in at the beginning. Also when the chorus comes in.
NMI: I love the cadence of the drums as Sean plays during the middle of the song.
Through The Spring: The last verse... I love the way his voice sounds.
Take It Away: Must be a drum thing, I love the rhythm during the last verse. Where it's just Sean singing, and the drum in the background.
Locking Doors: The haunting quality of Sara's voice, and how well Sean, Sara & Glen's voices blend together.
26 Miles: That darn loop. It's grown on me.
Brick Window: I love the urgency of it.
Carousel: The first couple lines give me goosebumps. The fiddle at the end... it's the perfect way to end the song, and the album.

FINALLY!!!!![noise] I got 26Miles in the mail today! Turns out it was on backorder.
I've not listened to all of it yet, and most certainly don't have a fav. song or part yet, but from what I've heard so far I am impressed.
On the first song (I think), I thought, Wow, I like the drums. But then it seemed like later in the song they kind of overtook everything else. Still a nice change from the norm. I definately think I'm going to like this one. Probably more-so than Let it Fall.:)

I really have to say that listening to this albulm has changed how I once thought about Sean. Chris has always stuck out for me since I had always seen Sean as a little shy and more reserved. (I know this isn't the same for everyone)
But after listening to this CD I see a little more of Sean exposed and expressive, different from his Let it Fall albulm. I love it, when I went to see NC in concert, I was able to focus more on Sean and his creatively and it was great. I love this CD, how unique and creative it is, and I've always thought that Sean's had wonderful poetry in his lyrics. I only wish I could be as creative in writing. (English major here)
I love Locking Doors and agree with most of you on how the harmonies flow so wonderfully together.
At the Helotes concert that I went to they did a world premire as Sara said, of Take it Away and it was amazing. I'm so happy for Sean.
And a little off topic here, but Mastermandolin, we share the same birthday! haha. I won't say who's other birthday that is...ahem

i love NMI! the soft, cymbal-y drums in the beginning .. it's like a modern version of elevator music
Carousel: i love the weird undescribable noise... i guess the low slow deep sound that leads up to each horse here is painted so pretty the first time i heard that it gave me goosebumps but now i crack up like, ha ha when is this noise gonna end! i have no choice but to laugh! but it's a good laugh, not a sean-is-a-weirdo-for-putting-this-in-his-song laugh.. it's a wow-i-love-this laugh!
Locking Doors: Sara's harmony saying it's easier
Take it Away: simply, my fave song on the CD. the lyrics are touching but have no importance to me (im not frustrated with myself) I love the drum roll leading up to the take it away and i love the harmony (sean & glen?) Lay-ay-aying still but you ARE just asleep
On Ice: feet dont slip beneath me now, careful as i walk around, gingerly cuz im on ice at the ending and the music stops sorta before sean says im on ice eeek i love it!
26 miles: that darn loop.. got me hooked!
Chicago: glass and steel cut through the wind *fave part Now:* a lakestorm sent this way-ey-yay
could do without: Through the Spring, Hiding, Chutes & Ladders, Locking Doors ;)

Well I got 26 miles a couple days ago.I knew not to expect creek but that was what my subconscious mind expected so my first reaction was not a lovefest. I didn't hate it or anything though. I mean his first solo effort was more Bg based so it wasn't near as much a departure from NC. Anyway I listened another time or so and it really grew on me bigtime. I am now able to hear some unique elements to Seans songwriting especially after relistening to his NC material then listening to 26. 26 it really has deepened my appreciation for his songs. At first I was like this is too different then upon further listening I now can hear some commonality. Not that it needs any commonality.(NC was just my point of reference). He is a very good vocalist though IMO Chris and his sis are stronger vocalists. The songs he wrote are generally well suited to his voice. 26 is quite good
BTW the instrumentals rock
I love the CD. Seans vocals have amazed me since I heard This Side. Anyways here are some of my fav parts:
Chicago-the lyricsWishing they were warm inside, as they breathe into their fists
Hiding- I love the way Sean sings The sun ain't inviting
Chutes & Ladders- there is so much energy in this song
Take It Away- the lyrics are deep

Until one day, the mail came and she read love his voice once again i love, and the flute in the beginning or whatever it is
4) NMI: i love it! it's got so much flavor and the fiddle gives me chills!!!
5) what are you hiding beneath the leaves that color you such a nice lyric...
6) write me a song i can sing all year long, and that'll send me to sleep when there's no one beside me that i need me and all the trees have all lost their leaves when he says send me to sleep his voice goes up...ooohhh i loveeeee it
7) Chute and Ladders- great guitar
8) laying still but you are just asleep....you are soon to speak and change is what you are in take it away... i love the harmony

I agree, it's the best CD ever...What's weird is The Lighthouse's Tale video just came on CMT...So I'm listening to it right now. But anyway, my favorite song is Brick Window, but Sean's playing sounds AMAZING on Chutes and Ladders:D
