Thanks Christy I tried that but there are two little parts that I can't make out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.[noise]

That one time his hand slipped and I saw the dart sail away
I don't know where it landed but I'm guessing between green and grey
I thought nothing of it but it still haunts him like a ghost,
_______________________ that mattered the most (?)

and the other one is...

I want you to love me and whisper___unable to speak (?)
and he wonders aloud why feelings this strong make the body so weak.

Sarah-if you could help me with either of these I'd be really thankful. It's driving me crazy!! lol

Thanks

PS-Is it just me or do you think this song might be about Chris missing his future fiance while on the road? Just wondering.

:)

from what i've heard it's...

with all eyes upon me except two that mattered the most

i want you to love me i whisper unable to speak

but... i don't know for sure. the lyrics will probably be in the cd insert of the new cd.

ya they are in the insert thing in the jewel case.....

in a thing I read he wrote it after he completely blew her off or something like that.....I forget where I read it, but he was really mad at himself for blowing her off, and this was the result!

Well, the ORIGINAL version of Green and Grey was written before Jess, and it was all in the first person! Chris wrote it because he was always on the road and missed being with his girlfriend, trying to convince himself (and others) that he was fine with his notebook and diskman for friends....

I'm not sure if he was mad for blowing her off (I'd like to know where you read it), but from talking with Chris at the time I don't think that was it. I always interpretted Green as Envy and Grey as Memory, but then again I could be completely off base here.

I always thought of green as the limelight chris is in. grey as being indifferent or unable to distinguish.

Perhaps.

I was just talking with my wife and her impression is that the green was Chris' own jealousy for not getting what he desired (the girl), and the grey was the misery he felt for constantly touring and not being able to express his feelings.

The wonderful thing about music -- there is no right answer :)

The song where he blew her off is the Smoothie Song not Green and Gray.

Why do you think that?

He wrote it out of frustration for not acting like he liked her. He was afraid so he didn't say anything. So he wrote it cause he was mad at himself. The title though came from the audience.

Well, if you consider the original name of Smoothie Song (which I wont post here due to underage membership)... I do not doubt it. And yes, the audience did come up with the original name. I don't know who came up with Smoothie Song, but it is clearly a derivitive of the original.

Sarah,

What ARE the original words to Green and Grey? I have heard several people reference them, and I actually heard NC perform the song in May 2001, but I do not remember the words.
Would you mind sharing them? Pretty please:D

And everybody, do you think Chris was talking about himself in the song? I didn't think so, because at the beginning he refers to himself as one of those who would all vote him most likely to be loved to death. And it is like he is watching this other person perform, play darts, torture himself about a girl who does not know he loves her... I did not take it as Chris talking about himself.
Whatcha think?

Irondaisy, the original words are very close to the current words, except in the first person. For example, that particular line was They would all vote me most likely to be loved to death. The line with the darts was It might remind me of when I aimed for the bullseye and hit it nine times out of ten.

My favorite line from the original lyrics was the line about how that evening turns into this every night.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the full original lyrics handy. I'll try to acquire them. Maybe someone else has them? When you heard it in May 2001 it was probably the original lyrics. That was around the timeframe that he changed it.

I have about 50 live shows so I probably have the original song on one of them. They also changed a few of the This Side lyrics.

It used to be Reasons few have I but to come back again. And There's no place to hide and I'm nothing but scared. There's no place to hide and I'm nothing but scared. There's no place to hide and I don't think I'm scared. At least I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Chris made the comments about being frustrated at blowing off the person he'd just met (now his fiance) in reference to The Smoothie Song. The comments are in the media kit sent by Sugar Hill to promote the new record.

And the posters that said Green and Grey was originally a first-person song written by Chris about himself are correct... I remember some comments he made to me around that time about the whole issue of being on the road so much and, while he totally enjoyed playing shows for people, still missing the people that weren't out there with him.

I remember reading about the Smoothie Song thing somewhere. I'm pretty sure there is a link to the article in which Chris talked about it on the official website. It's one of those links to articles under the news section but I don't remember which one. Maybe that will help some though for anyone interested.

Well, he did write it for a friend... after a fashion. But the subject _was_ about him.
