Johnny Staats rules!
Hmm...I think you might be able to find semi-accurate version Mandolin Meltdown at www.jaybuckey.com
Again, consult the cd before trusting the tab.

Do you have a slow-down program? That is a really good way to learn things you like without having notation/tab... I use The Amazing Slow Downer and lots of people keep telling me that Transkriber is the way to go. It's a little bit of a slower process than just reading someone else's tab... but I think well worth it, specially when there's no tab to be found ;) I only do realtively simple songs that I can pick out (I'm not familiar enough with chords to pick em out yet :p )
Just a thought ;)

another kinda technical question...i've been taking lessons, but had to quit for the next two months b/c, w/ school and soccer kicking in gear, i wasn't getting enough time in to practice...but i was however working on movable scales, and have learned all 5 positions...however, hooking them together and playing a continuous scale up and down the fretboard...i have trouble with...any hints?

To answer the first bit... there are several computer programs out there that can slow down a song without changing the pitch. You can isolate a section, slow it waaaaay down (up to 400% ) and then loop it, so you can listen to it and figure out what notes are what & where they are on the fretboard. Basically writing your own tab ;) It's an easier way of learning by ear than trying to do so at full speed, which can be daunting.
For the second question... I'd highly reccomemend Chris' instructional DVD Essesntial Mandolin Techniques (you can get it at amazon.com or just about any store that sells mando stuff. He goes over scales that stretch 3 octaves, and shows you how to shift positions so they they flow smoothly. Also just an awesome reference to have for any mando player. Lots of it is pretty complex and might be above your current level (it's sure as heck above mine!! LOL) but there are great exercises and scales & general technique tips that really can help anyone.

Mox,
I retract what I said about the tab on Jay Buckey's site, it's complete OFF. I tried it recently, and was horrified by it's errors. It's completely wacko.
My opinion? Learn it by ear.
