yup that's it- I called my friend who plays and she said to rub it on the bow up/down ten times, so I did and it still didn't make any noise so I did that five more times and it works now- it is still dreadfully out of tune though, and the thing for the E string keeps popping out of place dang it!!!

oh well, I'll find some way to tune my violin.

Awww, poor Joce!! At least you didn't get a little piece of wood and say, Hmm, cute. I wonder what this is? and toss it into the case. (It acutually turned out to be my bridge....) I don't know how to help you tune, except to say what people (like Matt and a dozen other super-helpful people on here) have told me. Use an electronic tuner if you must, but don't rely on it, and get a teacher if possible. But if you are like me, the few teachers that are available are not in convenient driving distance.

How to tune......

Well the best thing to do if you are really really out of tune and it sounds like you are is to get an electronic tuner and ANOTHER fiddle that is IN tune. Use both to tune. First tune with the other violin to get it close to the correct pitch and then use the electronic tuner to get it perfectly tuned. Yes in your case it involves tuning both by ear and by an electronic tuner.

By the way its E. A. D. G.

P.S when you tune an instrument always tune the string down and then bring it UP to pitch. It will stay in tune much longer that way.

I always have a hard time tuning problems. The messed up pegs [bang] tend to become loose and it is way out of tune. Usaully I have my violin teacher tune it. She does it by ear. I thought about playing each string for a while and listen to it real carefully. Tune the A string first then D,G, and E.Listen for a ring, when you play and lift up your bow.

If the black tuning pegs are loose you need to force the peg in while you tune.

either...
1. a little bit of pencil lead [which s acts as a lubricant] ..

or

2. a little bit of rosin dust put on where the contact is made.. clean it off wiht a cloth first...

3. pegcompound lubricant.. but that costs $ - use the other 2..

if it is a cheap violin it might not have the most round of holes.. which is bad....

also, you really have to jam them in there...

hope that helps...

I'm havin a bow/rosin prob

I duno if its the bow or my really stinky rosin but I put the rosin on and it plays for like 10 minutes and then all the rosin just...doesn't work anymore. since its a relatively new bow how much rosin am I supposed to be putting on? I don't wanna put too much on and wreck something *i feel really ignorant too cause I duno what I'm doing haha*

but am I supposed to be putting a lot on?

Use lots of rosin. To make sure I have enough I watch the dust to so call it fall once played make sure the string ware ever the bow was is white. Just keep playing.
