In the Stewart/Macdonald catalog they list an abundance of mandolin parts. There are tunners that range from 40 bucks to 400 dollars. Does anyone know what the real scoop is on this?
I know the diff between good machines and junky ones but these look the same. I mean, I'm sure the more expensive ones are better, but C'mon 400 bucks better? any feedback on this subject would be cool. Will my mando stay in tune longer w/ this upgrade?

Hi there!
You know what? I really don't know what the big deal is with expensive tuners, but the ones that are around $400 are called waverly tuners...I don't know whats so good about them.

Hello,
I'm in the process of building an F-style mandolin and I've scrapped the first set of tuners I bought! They were just some cheapies made by All Tune and I wouldn't recommend them at all. They didn't turn very smoothly and didn't hold their tune very well either. I'm going to try a set of Gotohs next. Yes, $400 is absolutly outragous for a set of Waverly tuners. The reason Stew-Mac gets so much for them because they own the product and are the exclusive distributors for Waverly tuners. I'm anxiously waiting for someone else to build a high-quality set of tuners that cost half as much as Waverlys. They're supposedly the best, but the best quality product is often the poorest value. I have a little saying at my violin shop, that if you have a product or service that people grudgingly pay the price you want for it, then you're on to something!!!

Just a little follow up on the Waverly mandolin tuners thread. I just found out that Stewart MacDonald has discontinued the Waverly mandolin tuners! It looks like people were not willing to pay (even grudgingly) the outrageous price for them. Apparently they're only making guitar tuners these days.

Hmm... guys, I prefer buying a mandolin..... speaking of which, i'm trying to save up for one. My Birthday's in August, and I've only got about $100 saved. My mom said whatever you have by the time it's your birthday is the price range of your mandolin. I already am getting an A style mandolin, to save on money..... but do any of you know what brand of mandolins that could give me more for my money?

hmmm, unfortunately even a lower-end mando will usually cost you more than that, but I noticed that www.musiciansfriend.com has a Rogue mandolin listed at $129. I have NO IDEA if Rogue is any good or not tho...I gather that's the musician's friend generic label, made in Korea. Here's a review page I found for ya:

Sounds like these 2 reviewers are newbies too and satisified they got their money's worth.

[think har Well....hmmm.... I've heard a lot of bad rumors about certain mandolin brands.... and, unfortunatley (did I spell that right?) Rouge brand mandolins have had a couple of bad rumors. But, after all, they're just rumors.....[think] but then again, not all rumors are lies. I don't know wether to believe them or not. But, my B-day's August 22, and I get money for allowance, and for mowing lawns and babysitting.... I'll be able to rack up a few more bucks before my birthday, so maybe I could get a better one. In other news, if and when I get my mandolin, its name will be Sara, after Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins.:D And just a quick question.... how and why is your username mandoBob? You really don't have to answer that if you don't want to..... I was just curios:p And one more thing.... thank you still for the advice on Chris yesterday. Thanks to you, I'm almost totally over the Chris engagement thing. Thanks Again,
Ashley (I might have to change my username now :D )
