OK I am a woodwind player so don't hurt me! Everytime I talk to people about Nickel Creek and tell them the instrumentation, I naturally include Sara and her fiddle. Then people always ask me the difference between a fiddle and a violin. I was once told there is a difference but I don't remember what. I meant to ask Sara at the concert on the 6th (:D ) but forgot. Can anyone else tell me?

The difference between a fiddle and a violin is within the person playing it. In General a vilonist has teeth whereas a fiddle player does not. Feel free to laugh at my lame joke.

I'm not quite sure, but I believe it's how it's played. But the number of teeth plays a huge factor. ;)

i am by no means an expert on either instrument but from my readings here on what matt the fidd and others have posted is that the difference between the two are two things: the bridge of one of the instruments is slightly higher than the other and secondly..i believe the way the bow is drawn is different also. these things aren't to be taken as fact and i answered because it looks like no one else has either so maybe in me giving the wrong answers, it will spur a violin or fiddle player to correct me and therefore give you your answer.

No, that is very helpful, Goose! A violin player told me that the bridge was different, too, but I couldn't remember how he described the difference. But then when I told someone that they scoffed. But if anyone has anything more concrete that would be even better. (great jokes, by the way although it would mean, of course that Sara plays violin then!)

My mother-in-law is a bit of an expert in the field so let me ask the question and get back to you (assuming Matt doesn't first)

another way from Barrage.. the violin sings, the fiddle dances.. [which i slightly dissagree with.]
