Ok. First off I know this is a Sara/Fiddle Forum, but I need help from fiddlers and I thought to myself gee, where can I find advise from fiddlers? Oh. I know. The fiddle forum on the nickelcreek.info mesage boards. :D
So I go this Irish Fiddle Tunes book today and I noticed some things in there that I haven't experienced before on mandolin.
First, Rolls. Are those equivilant to a tremelos? If not what are they equivilant to?
Second, Grace Notes. How do those work because I've noticed a lot of them start higher than the note it preceeds. Is that more like a pull-off?
Any help would be REALLY appreciated. If I think of anything else, I'll ask.

I hope I can help you. Let me start out by saying that I have started playing classical violin about 6 years ago and since then have moved on to mostly irish, old-time, and bluegrass styles. About a year or so ago I have picked up mandolin a little bit. I think the rolls are kind of equivalent to tremelos. They are just little ornaments that you can add on to any longer note in a tune but you can also do with out. Another ornament is the grace note which is just like a pull off. It is held for less than a split second so that the main note still lands on the beat. The only difference might be that in pull offs I have noticed sometimes take half the length of the main note but grace notes are very very short, just right before the note. The physical part of it is done in a similar way though with just a quick flick down to the string and back up... but with out the pulling off. I don't know if that made any sense at all but I hope it helped a little bit. [noise]
