View Full Version : Sara's quote that somewhat disappointed me (worth reading!)

The last sentence is what surprized me...I am not disappointed in sara for saying this as much as I am disappointed in the record industry in general.

As great as these young players are, the history of recorded music clearly shows that, sometime soon, some sharp-dressed guy reeking of cologne will tell them that to make it big, they'll have to cut a duet with Bryan Adams, and Watkins will have to vamp it up for the video.
''At some point, we'll have to deal with that,'' Watkins says. ''I do not anticipate going with the flow. When we did our last album, the record company never even heard it until it was done. We just gave it to them and said, 'Now go reproduce and distribute.' I don't know if that's ever gonna be possible again.

I'm fairly sure she said Now go produce and distribute with a sense of humor (ala Go forth and multiply).
It's an interesting artlice and I completely agree with:
It's obvious, even to the 22-year-old Watkins: Corporate music is killing artistry, demanding a repeat of the same successful formula each time, rather than encouraging experimentation.
''There are lots of people who are established, who do what they do better than anyone else,'' she says. ''And that's great. But that's not what we do. The reason I'm touched by music is it seems like this person is purging their soul. One note on a cello can be more exhilarating than an entire symphony.''
GO SARA!! :D

I don't get it. Why's it bother you? Because they may lose control over their stuff so they can make S.H. happy? Or, that S.H. may choose to keep a closer eye on things, being that they know NC is one of their top artists? Well, if the first scenerio be true, I don't think NC would EVER compromise their music for the label. If the second be true, that's just smart business on the label's part to be more protective of their investment...as long as they don't try to control or change that which makes the investment profitable in the first place, which is NC themselves.

Check out the original post again for clarity... the last sentence is the one about how Sara didn't know if it would be possible to just hand the record company a finishes product that they (Nickel Creek) had created with those who they (Nickel Creek) felt best suited the creative needs of the project as well as their (Nickel Creek's) personal creative demands... to me, a clear lament of the difficulties of artists to have a successful career by industry standards and remain true to their hearts... WITHOUT EXCESS MEDDLING FROM THE INDUSTRY PEOPLE...
A good lesson can be learned from the current jamband scene, however, as opposed to the current country music scene. Self promotion and reaching out to the fans directly through forums such as this, coupled with a liberal taping and trading policy has united bands with those that appreciate the particulars of a band's stylistic offerings... a la Phish, Widespread Panic, The Dead, Allman Brothers, etc... the list is growing. These bands have built a great scene through hard work and resisting the Machine of the industry... Got to proceed with caution, however... MUSIC FIRST!!!

All of you make good points. I prob read into the quote the wrong way.
Of coarse, I believe NC would not comp their music for a SH rep, but at first glance that is what is appeared

let me just remind people.. we are talking about sugar hill.. the label most internatiionally knwo for putting out boy bands like new kids on the block, spears, etc. etc.
i am sure they will have a completly aritficial no human connection to any folk tradition on it
;)
I'm with Matt. Those people are monsters! I mean they have DOLLY PARTON SIGNED. We know how much of a rage she is with today's youth. I bet they're gonna make N. C. start learning dance moves. That would be hot.

Having won a Grammy with their last effort though, don't be surprised if Sarah et al have more of a free reign in dictating the musical direction of the next album than if they hadn't won the award.
As has been noted, music companies are in the business of making money (well selling records, but the end result is the same), and as the saying goes, it it ain't broke.........
The formula of This Side has drawn in a wider fan base than the traditional New Grass one (hell, I listen to it!) and it would be commercial suicide to turn then into N* Nickel Creek Sync Boys, so I doubt the label would over-play their hand.
Then again........

I'm afraid that I'm baffled by this discussion, people. We're talking about Sugar Hill records as if they're some kind of behemoth? Sugar Hill is a little independent folk label, part of the Welk Group. This isn't Sony Music, nor EMI, nor Polygram, nor WB. This is a small record company that is known for giving its artists lots of freedom. I don't think you need worry about Sugar Hill manipulating Nickel Creek or anyone else on its roster.

And pyrotechnics with stage diving. I think I would be rendered inebriated from the sheer ecstasy of viewing Sara Watkins doing the robot during Spit on a Stranger.
Next time they ask the crowd for cover tune requests, I swear it's going to be Larger than Life or Girlfriend. And I heard that Mo Def and P. Diddy will be producing the next album. That would be da shizzle, fo real.

There are plenty of bands, especially in the jamband scene, as already mentioned who have maintained a huge fan base and their artistic integrity all at the same time without selling out. I have massive amounts of respect for those people. Some of you shrug off the idea of Sara vamping it out as no big deal, but I would lose respect for her artistry if it indeed happened. She has enough talent alone that she doesn't have to go down to that level, regardless of what a record company says. Plenty of bands that tour year round but never make a music video or win a grammy have proven that.
