This link was posted on the greenandgray.net message board, and I have really found this lecture inspiring and helpful...wanted to share it with you all, and would love to hear thoughts on it! Could spark some cool discussions...

It's a lecture given by jazz pianist Ken Werner...

yeah, i read that too and thought it was really interesting. good idea to post it here.
i've tried his approach (getting out of the way and letting the music just come) and it did seem to help me relax and just enjoy myself. however, i know that for me, as a beginner, and for violin (a little more technical than piano i think) it's important for me to still do lots of drills and scales and stuff. (I know he didn't say to NOT do that, but i could see myself taking it to that extreme.)

still though, his approach and ideas are very good and something that i think's become permanantly integrated into my attitude towards playing. yay! :)

mmm yeah I have the problem of taking things further than they were meant also - definately agree he's not against practicing skills, just pro mastering one small skill at a time...and it sounds like when he started this he was beyond a beginner's stage - dunno his attitudes on taking this approach immediately...

helped me right away - made me MUCH less self critical, music more fun, and even listening to insanely talented people not as irritating as before!! lol
