So who else is devastated that NC lost? I mean, I'm not criticizing the other artists....but Nickel Creek was definately the best group there! I'm sorry to complain, but TRICK PONY???? Come ON!!!
[bang]
I LOVE NICKEL CREEK!

although I too am disappointed that they didnt win this time around, I think it's not all bad. I mean, if they were to win everything all the time, do you think it would affect them in a not-so-good way? of course I hope not, but they are human after all.
I wish them all the commercial success possible, but some things are more important than that. frankly, it's pretty easy to be cynical about these big awards, so I find myself happy when folks I appreciate actually win, because it will spread the word about their work (like O Brother). but when they don't win, I don't mind. in this case, it's probly b/c the C in ACM ... I dont mean to offend, but this is not the same genre that still plays boot scootin' boogie on the radio everyday? yikes.
and yes we are aware that you love NC.

lol....i wasn't sure if i was making that clear enough. And yes, I do agree with you about the awards. Nickel Creek is DEFINATELY NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT a country band. But still, it pains me to think that there are people out there that think TRICK PONY has even a hundredth of the talent that Nickel Creek does....
I LOVE NICKE CREEK (just thought i'd remind y'all)

Let's also remember that the ACM's are Hollywood's awards. Not the real awards. Did that make sense?

MandoBob is right. It is really easy to become cynical. I became cynical in the year 1 A.G. (After Garth--roughly 1992). Frankly, with the crap that Music Row has been peddling the last 10 years, I can't believe Nickel Creek is even being nominated for these awards. That, in my opinion, is a victory right there. I can't think of the last time an act on an independent label, that gets virtually no radio airplay, has been nominated for the CMA's and ACM's. Besides, if they were forced to share the spotlight with the Garths, Faiths, and Trick Ponies, they would be susceptible to catching second hand suck, then we'd all have to find a new favorite band. So there is a silver lining. [think]

I too was sad that Trick Pony received the award over NC. I thought NC's video was of a much higher quality than Trick Pony's. [sob]

I was upset Nickel Creek didn't win the award. definatly they were thee most talented new group. I do however like Trick Pony too, but by far I like NC the best. But I think the CMAs are voted more towards the main stream Country, which Nickel Creek is not, so I would have to agree that the 2 nominations should be an honor. As some one said, the CMAs are Hollywoods awards, the ACMs I think will be more generous over time to NC because it is Nashville's award show and I think the ACMs look more at the talent than the airplay type system the CMAs are.

It is a shame that NC hasn't gotten as much commercial attention as they deserve, but it's not all that surprising. There are hundreds of bands with multiple Gold, even Platinum recordings that have never won an award and never will. Some of them have been around longer than the NC crew has been alive, some twice that long. My point is that NC is still a relatively unknown band. That is changing rapidly. They are still very young and have a long, bright future ahead of them. As fans (and many of us musicians at that), we have a genuine appreciation for their incredible talent. The music industry as it were, still doesn't quite know how to take them. As I said, they are so young, talented, and musically different, the industry hasn't experienced anything quite like them before. NC's army of admiring fans will continue to grow, as will their talent (hard to imagine getting even better!) and the pressure on the greedy commercial music industry to capitalize on the phenomenon known as Nickel Creek. Be patient fellow fans, and I think we will all see Nickel Creek get the recognition they deserve and thensome. Meanwhile, all the awards and accolades that might possibly come their way in the future will not make them more talented or better people. Awards or no awards, a great many famous recording artists can only dream about selling 10,000 CD's a week. Eat your heart out Nashville!!

Just Think though. WHEN NC beats out Trick Pony at the CMAs next year with thier new album, they will be far more impressive than winning at the little league award show. I'm not saying that being nominated is bad at all. It's awsome that they got nominated for such a high-rated catagory.

I'm almost glad Nickel Creek didn't win because they are not country and they aren't cranking out over-dubbed sugar-coated crap like most people in Nashville. It's common knowledge that most new artists in country music just missed getting a pop deal and figure they'll start out country and bide their time until they can get a crossover song like Shania Twain or Faith Hill. Nickel Creek is so far above and beyond most of their competition at those awards that it was like comparing Mozart and the amazing Britney Spears lol. Oh and Trick Pony only won because the Dixie Chicks didn't put out an album last year. The next time they do they'll win and keep winning because the music industry likes them. I hope all of you (and those fabulous Nickel Creekers) are having an amazing Memorial Day weekend I leave you with the wise words of Trick Pony:
Well Pacasso painted them pictures,
there was beauty in every stroke.
When asked about his motivation
he said I think it's bout time you should knnoooww
It's just what I do when I can't get no lovin
just what I do when I can't get no lovin
I'm the workinest painter that you ever saw
cause lately I ain't gettin no lovin at all
[wowOwow] I'm sorry ya'll-but you gotta admit that's hilarious that they won.
God Bless!!

Nickel Creek, like many bands that fall under the broad genre somewhere between country, folk, blues, and rock, get little official recognition from Nashville.
I've been an alt-country fan ever since I watched k.d. lang sing Luck in Your Eyes at the 1989 Grammys, and watched her and Lyle Lovett walk off with best country artist awards. Yet the Nashville establishment snubbed both of them, and you'll never hear either of them on the radio. (Well, k.d. left the field, and her music's never been as good as it was on Absolute Torch and Twang.)
Also don't forget O Brother Where Art Thou had to sell 4 million copies and win 5 Grammies before country radio bothered to ever once play I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow!
Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing for outstanding artists like NC to be able to operate outside of the constraints of the music establishment. The amazing thing is, even with all the corporate consolidation in the recording and broadcast industries, artists like NC continue to thrive and get their music out to the masses. And they can do so without having to sell out to Music Row!

I personally think Nickel Creek falls under the 'other' catagory simply because you can't call them country, bluegrass, or folk. They have all of that but not enough to 'place' them. Yes I agree that trick pony shouldn't have won simply because I like nickel creek better, but you turn on a radio station and you'll more than likely get trick pony before you get nickel creek. You just have to remember that just because they don't win today gives an even better chance for them to win later on and when they do their reward is going to be greater than some piece of metal on a lousy tv show. In my mind, they have already won!
I wish all musicians could have the same viewpoint as Jimmy Buffet:
I have never won any awards for any music that I've written...but I don't care as long as I have fans like Parrotheads...
