View Full Version : "clicking" pick

Like using the really heavy gauge picks *also like using the really light ones, go figure :) * but when I do, I get this clicking sound when the pick hits the string, before it makes the actual note. and it's REALLY irritating...don't know how audible it is if you're just listening and not playing, but it drives me up the wall. Anybody know a way to combat this?? Pick directior or slant? or a different material?? The one that bothers me the most is a gator grip pick; is the fuzzy texture on that helping to produce this sound????

That's why I am a medium gauge girl ;)

whenever i play open mic and use the guitar and pic of the guy that runs it, i also use his heavy pic, and haven't really noticed any clicking carrying over into the mic.
course, depending upon the night, i'm too terrified about my notes so i'm paying more attention on how my voice sounds and if i play the chords right...
so, i spose that didn't help at all. [guilty]

Rotfl!! Aw - but medium gauge sounds sooo...sooo...meeeedium.... :p
Actually Aubrey that was a help! I'm not quite as worried about it if the sound doesn't seem to carry over into a mic...I haven't played to a mic yet, so I didn't know that...much more comforting!!!

i'm also thinking that if it DOES carry over the mic just a little bit, that it may add a certain additional quality to it, almost like a tiny background percussion sound? and that it would fulfill the music more than it would hurt it.
having a thicker pic usually helps you to have a much more.. solid... sound, anyway.
:)
glad that my blatherin gcould help!

Ooo! A percussive element! I hadn't thought of that yet!! Now you've got me all curious...wonder if there's a way I could work the sound in to be helpful?? hmm I do a lot of solo stuff anyway, so added percussion is a GOOD thing!! [noise]
yeah...I read somewhere that a heavier gauge pick gives you a truer tone, like it's more of the guitar's actual sound, where as light ones are more of the pick's sound...which I'm not sure makes a lot of sense now that I'm writing it out [think har but at least we can hear the difference!! :D

i've also noticed that lighter picks have more of a... flappy?.. sound.
while i'm here at my friend andreas, i should borrow her pics and experiment on my guitar before i leave later (she bought a sample pack that has 8 different gauges)

ooo! do! and let me know what you find out with the different gauges...my music store doesn't really sell dif gauges, except with the gator grips...bought one of each of those...
with the gator grips at least, and my heavy gauge strings, haven't noticed much flappiness *is that a word??* with the light gauge picks...which is a definite good thing!!! flappy ... bad LOL!!

you know? i never did get around to doing that little experiment! (sorry!)..
i know that she 'invested' in a sampler pack somewhere online, but i don't know the website. i had noticed that, too, in going to most guitar places (which i need to do again, because my pics are disappearing at an alarming rate, much like my socks!), that they don't have a wide variety of gauges...
i'll check it out as soon as i get to a guitar store!

no problem! :)
I know! My old guitar store *just moved - I don't think there IS even a guitar store here :P * only had different guages in the gator grip picks. How can a store that sells so many guitars sell so few picks??!! *sighs*
Good luck in your search! And if ya do find that URL, lemme know!!
