Hey guys!
I have a quesiton. I know that there is a no flash rule for taking photos at a NC concert. I know that a few people I know have snuck in a flash.;) I was wondering if all of you tried to hide your flash or what? I am going to the Tulsa concert and I want to get some better pictures of the show. Anyone got any tips for taking pics without using a flash?!

Well... I have a camera with a no-flash setting, but the shutter speed on it is slow, so the pictures tend to be blurry on that setting. What has worked best for me is to hide my flash. I have the kind that I can push the flash bulb down, and it doesn't go off. I recommend trying that if you can, and gat the highest speed of film that you can find...800 or up. My best concert pictures were when I used 1600 speed film.

Yeah get as high film as you can and as close as possible too (of course!). I am not a photography buff but I managed to get some pretty good shots at my last concert w/ no flash and 800 film speed. For instance:

Here's the story on my pics. I bought a disposable camera... unawares that the flash button had been pushed, I took a picture, and it flashed, I felt absolutely terrible. But this girl infront of me was taking flash pictures left and right, so.... about five times, I took a pic the same time she did, and I covered my flash, I mean I feel really bad about it, but I didn't take that many, they didn't flash too much, and you wouldn't even know I was the one who was doing cuz miss flash happy infront of me. But yeah, NO flashing aloud... do as I say, not as I do.
I always think flash photography is rude during a performance. It's distracting to the artists and to the other audience members.
I've had a some great pics come out with my D cam, just using the automatic settings. The best 2 tips I can think of are #1 get close and #2 only photograph during slowww songs. They move less LOL and have a better chance of turning out :) Solos make a good photo opportunity :)

Okay...Now I feel really bad...[guilty] I took flash photos at the Newport Folk Festival, and I didn't know how to turn off the flash cuz it was my dad's camera, and I didn't want to accidentally erase all of the pictures by just pressing buttons, and here's where I feel really bad about...I knew about the rule...And I took 167 pictures...Ahhh...jeez...I feel horrible...And I didn't even need the flash, but I ended up blinding them anyway...[guilty] [guilty] [guilty] [guilty] [guilty]

They're probably getting more used to that anyway what with playing to larger venues and all. You can more control that sort of thing in the smaller places. We're lucky they let us bring cameras in at all...alot of concerts don't allow it...period!! If the worse thing you ever do is flash them...then you're ok. I'm sure with their growing fame they have had to get used to much worse things.

the rule is more in effect for the people around you.. it is actually very annoying and distraction to have constant flashes near you..
i think it is worse than talking loudly

If you can't control your flash setting, black electrical tape works really well at covering it up...just make sure it is the non-permanent kind.

i feel like such a horrible person...and a bad fan...heh...
i honestly didn't know they had a 'no flash' rule until a couple of days ago. at the northwestern show i took a bunch without flash just out of courtesy for everyone, and then took two WITH flash since there were a few people by me doing it CONSTANTLY...and then i just turned it off. right as i was putting it away a boy asked me to stop so. i got the point.
oh....i feel so bad now...

I got two things to say: 1.) A suggestion, I heard from someone on here that if you have a piece of duct tape put it over the flash, never really tried it. 2.) My wife is asking for a digital camera for Christmas from her grandma and the budget is $350, are there any out there that someone can reccommend that you don't have to worry about a flash and can do mini movies on?

Whoa...That's exactly what I was looking for too. Any suggestions? Also, what good ones out there have a 5x or better zoom? I'm looking for something powerful enough where I can take it to concerts and have okay or really bad seats (even though there's really no such thing as that :D), but awesome pictures.

I recently got a digital camera called the HP Photosmart 733. It takes videos, (has a no flash option ;) ) 3 x zoom, and takes wonderful photos. try that!

I have a Nikon Coolpix 4500, which is a couple years old by now and may even be considered obsolete these days, but I was able to take some great concert shots with no flash. See this thread (http://www.nickelcreek.info/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2984) about midways down, I posted some of the pics there and I also wrote a big bunch of info in there about how to take no-flash digital images. The key items are a fully-opened aperture, increased film speed or sensitivity w/ noise reduction if equipped, and shutter speeds around 1/30 to 1/15 minimum. Also, remember that zooming in will sacrifice light, which is a precious commodity in a no-flash environment (especially indoors). The way around this is to get front row seats ;-)

I have a fun story. :D
So tonight during the Watkins Family Hour, right before a song Sean randomly takes a camera out of his pocket and goes, Mom or Dad? Could one of you take a picture of us during this song? Here, I'll bring it over to you. and he proceeds to walk through the audience (holding his guitar, mind you) over to their parents, he hands the camera to his dad, and then goes back onstage like nothing had happened! LOL... and then during the song, their dad took a handful of pictures (with a flash)... so yeah, just thought you guys might find that funny... I was like cracking up, hehe :D

At a Chris/Mike show last month, Chris got up in the middle of the performance to ask someone to stop taking pictures. She was a really big fan and obviously had only good intentions. I think sometimes we forget what it's like, having to be so into the song with zero distractions.
That's hilarious about Sean and the camera! Haha, they're all so awesome, so real. I can just picture mom and dad, the proud parents snapping away! :D

Hey, banjochickie, that was great, wasn't it?! Sean and his dad were standing right behind my chair as they negotiated how to use the camera!

aww! hehe that's so fun. I agree w/ what Emily said, they're just so down to earth and real; I love that about them! :D
At their show at a coffee house a few days before Christmas, some guy took a picture of Sean & Sara, so what did Sean do? Busted out a camera and took a picture of the guy! LOL (I think he might have been a friend of his) ;)

That's cool LOL…it's fun how entertaining they are in so many ways. As a very fortunate southern California resident, I'll bet you'll be going to Largo again at the end of the month, huh? Have a great time, and post a report if you do go!

Good luck, I'll be crossing my fingers for you too…at least maybe you can get a seat at the bar if a table isn't available…

I played frisbee with Nickel Creek! I was throwing a free one I had with a few buddies near the tour busses at the Buies Creek show. The whole band was right on the other side of a little orange fence. One guy missed a long throw and Sara threw it back, so we asked if they wanted to play for a while. We threw their frisbee back and forth for about 15 minutes.
There were all kinds of flashes going off at the show. Some people took pictures between songs, but there were several pictures taken right in the middle of songs. The security didn't try to do a thing about it. Come on folks, don't be jerks.

I didn't know about the flash rule, but usually don't use a flash for concert pics anyway (the flash only works for anything 10ft or closer). But I was right next to the stage and forgot to hit the button to turn the flash off once and I took a pic of Sean as he was oh, 6 inches from me and just blinded him. He gave me this look and I mouthed Sorry to him and he just kinda shrugged and gave me an eh, it happens face.

Just to throw in my 2 pence worth - I can sympathise with you as I did the exact same thing to Sarah McLachlan a couple of weeks ago but I said sorry when I spoke to her after the show and she didn't mind.
