Oh my golly goodness is really how I think it would be appropriate to sum up this Nickel Creek experience for me.
The show Saturday night at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala was unbelievable in every possible since of the word. Of my now five creek experiences this is in the top three. I drove 5 hours to see this show so I was very excited for it and I think now I would drive 20 hours if I got to see a show like this again. While it was a sit down show and it was for an alumni thing at the college so it was not all fans the audience still had an amazing energy that the band was definitely playing off of, it was also the largest Nickel Creek sell-out crowd ever at I think around 3000 people. The set was fantastic, I am awful at remembering song titles and order and such but I can say that they did a lot of new stuff which was awesome from She Can't Complain to Lighthouses Tale Part 2 every song was right on. I also loved the song I'm sorry where Sean plays piano and Chris drums, it was awesome to see them bringing in new instruments. They did an all-acoustic encore and for the first part of it the each preformed their favorite Elliot Smith song, while I have never really listened to him, they did an amazing job of the songs and I now will be looking more into Mr. Smith.
After the show there were about 75 of us waiting to meet the band and Chris came out and brought his Mandolin no one really knew what was going on at first then he started playing. He played solo Green and Gray, When You Come Back Down, and some instrumentals before Sara came to join him and then Mark. Sean never came out but that was okay with the three of them it was still wonderful. They did this awesome song that I would love if someone could tell me that name of it included these lines Blue moon of Kentucky's more like Yellow. and I've never seen a melancholy moon. It was an awesome song and Chris seemed to have a good time singing it. They played for about 45 minutes until the bus started and they had to go, but even then Chris still came around to everyone and signed things and took pictures (which I have of all of this and will post when I can.) This was an amazing show and experience. I really don't know what to expect next time I see them as every time I do I have a better story to tell.
