Oh my golly goodness is really how I think it would be appropriate to sum up this Nickel Creek experience for me.
The show Saturday night at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala was unbelievable in every possible since of the word. Of my now five creek experiences this is in the top three. I drove 5 hours to see this show so I was very excited for it and I think now I would drive 20 hours if I got to see a show like this again. While it was a sit down show and it was for an alumni thing at the college so it was not all fans the audience still had an amazing energy that the band was definitely playing off of, it was also the largest Nickel Creek sell-out crowd ever at I think around 3000 people. The set was fantastic, I am awful at remembering song titles and order and such but I can say that they did a lot of new stuff which was awesome from She Can't Complain to Lighthouses Tale Part 2 every song was right on. I also loved the song I'm sorry where Sean plays piano and Chris drums, it was awesome to see them bringing in new instruments. They did an all-acoustic encore and for the first part of it the each preformed their favorite Elliot Smith song, while I have never really listened to him, they did an amazing job of the songs and I now will be looking more into Mr. Smith.
After the show there were about 75 of us waiting to meet the band and Chris came out and brought his Mandolin no one really knew what was going on at first then he started playing. He played solo Green and Gray, When You Come Back Down, and some instrumentals before Sara came to join him and then Mark. Sean never came out but that was okay with the three of them it was still wonderful. They did this awesome song that I would love if someone could tell me that name of it included these lines Blue moon of Kentucky's more like Yellow. and I've never seen a melancholy moon. It was an awesome song and Chris seemed to have a good time singing it. They played for about 45 minutes until the bus started and they had to go, but even then Chris still came around to everyone and signed things and took pictures (which I have of all of this and will post when I can.) This was an amazing show and experience. I really don't know what to expect next time I see them as every time I do I have a better story to tell.

Oh, wow! That sounds so awesome!! The after show, out by the bus I mean. I was at the concert, and even bought a shirt, but we had to go because we had to get back on the road to get home. I think we forgot about the daylight savings time, because that would have given us an extra hour! And your drive was even longer than ours, and you stayed. I should have just gotten a ride with you and flown back to my hometown....lol. Oh well... I'll stay after the concert the next time I get to see them.

The concert was totally awesome though!! I will agree on that! I think my fav part was the unpluged encore! Wow, I was totally blown away. I really got to see how talented they are, not that I didn't think so before, but I've never seen them live before this. I'll say for my first show it was the best!!

Where were y'all's seats?

When I arrived, I was informed that the guest list had never been updated to include my name (among my professional worst fears!) However, the people at Samford talked to Fielding, and he took care of it. Both the Samford folk and Fielding apologized that our seats weren't any better, but they were fine. We were orchestra level, center, 25th row. Unfortunately this meant that we were just a few rows behind the sound board, but it was alright.

The sound for this show was amazing. It was the first time I'd seen NC indoors (my fourth show total), so it was a completely different dynamic than what I have previously experienced.

The set list was very similiar to what was posted for the Tallahassee show (if not identical). Based on what I've read, I'd say this was a better show, though. I would love a recording of it, but I believe Samford's policy is no tapers (correct?)

The unplugged encore was difficult to hear - ESPECIALLY when it was just Sean. By the time they moved into Be Thou My Vision, though, they were projecting just fine.

The after-show was the best part (as it usually is!) I was disappointed that Sean didn't join the rest of the crew, but Mark, Sara, and Chris provided an excellent performance. They took a few requests (although people kept shouting out Nickel Creek titles even after Chris had stated, This is our LAST NC song.) I took several pictures out by the bus (see link below.) After Chris took a pic with my roommate and I, we hit the road back to Tuscaloosa.

I will continue the trend and just say the show was absolutely amazing. I was in the 10th row on the left side of the stage. I go to school up in Huntsville, AL and drove to B'ham for the show. I saw the parking lot encore too. I was about 5 feet to the right of Chris. Wow that was absolutely incredible. I also loved Sweethearts On Parade and I'm Sorry (the piano and drums song). What an amazing band. That was my 2nd show. Can't wait to see them again. :)

They also forgot to put my tickets aside, but it worked out okay for me as well. We ended up being put in the all alumni section on the right side of the balcony row B. So I was close and could hear Sean. However I was the only fan around me it seemed so I was cheering and hollering and such and everyone else was politely clapping. It was kinda odd, but I did not care. Did not put a damper on my show.
Thanks for posting those pics! They are awesome!

That song is a Tim O'Brien song from the album Rock in My Shoe. It's kinda a spoof on old country songs, really good. I'm not sure what it's called but I think it's track #9.

That looks like Bela Fleck on banjo in one pic. What did they play with him?

NC's regular bassist these days, Mark Shatz (Schatz?) plays banjo on Honest Men Make the Best Liars, one of the new songs. It's not Bela. I did though, see Bela play with NC on The Fox at City Stages this past May. :)

EDIT: Never mind. You probably did look at the City Stages pictures. Sorry! I didn't know those were up there too.
