Last night, was talking to some people, and one of them heard my brother playing Smoothie on his mandolin, and mentioned that she had seen the video on MTV. Has anybody else?? That would be so great!! And definately good exposure - she loved the song, and agreed they weren't country *therefore shouldn't be just on CMT*...

this could be good news!! [party]

I hope it gets regular rotation on MTV, but I doubt it will. Does MTV actually play videos anymore? It probably plays on MTV2. That's where all the good videos are anyway. That's where the Johnny Cash video for Hurt played. That's one the best videos I've ever seen by the way.

If it's on MTV was it on TRL? Can't you just see all the 14 year old girls screaming I LOVE CHRIS!!! (no offence to any 14 year olds :) ) in the studio. Let's recap. At number 3 it was Eminem number 2 was 50 cent and at number 1 it's 'The Smoothie Song' by Nickel Creek. Times Square full of Nickel Creek fans with their mandolins and fiddles. That would be so cool.

Except then they might start sucking because of commercialism.

That would be sweet!!! We could get a whole bunch of us together to go to Time Square and make signs. Then we could do one of those little anouncement bits about why we voted for The Smoothie Song. And I can totally see all of us jamming on our instruments (both real and air-type). But really, that is great exposure for NC.

I also think that Nickel Creek sucking is not a possibility...just look at my Chris quote.

No thats horrible! MTV=Evil & Bad Music!

Not if they're playing Nickel!! hehe...maybe, if it's true, it could indicate a change in what a lot of fans are wanting, and eventually the kind of stuff MTV plays...I mean, being on MTV isn't going to make Smoothie suddenly sound terrible - and, there seem to be a TON of kids, even semicool kids who are getting in bluegrass and more alt kinds of music - maybe this is the direction things are starting to go!! That would be soooo fantastic!!!!! [noise]

Flan - hehe, had the same things mentioned to me by somebody else too, the MTV2 thing. It drives me crazy how little vids mtv and vh1 actually play - and it really drives me insane when vh1 has on documentaries with things not even related to music - I mean, a Halle Berry show?? She may be great, but I think they're just a tad unfocused...

Linzee!! I am so with you!! hehe March to time square, air mandos in hand, and ready to flatpick and fiddle!!! WOOHOO!!!

I watch alot of MTV2, and I have yet to see it. I will certainly keep an eye out. You're right about Hurt. Great video. The White Stripes have great videos, also.

MTV plays alot of country in the backgroud of their shows. I remember just the other day I was watching one of their documentary type shows and I heard 'When You Come Around' by Derric Ruttan and I almost had a heart attack because I'd never expect to hear it.

I know I've heard 'The Lighthouse's Tale' and 'When you come back down' on that channel, too.

I wonder if you can e-mail them and tell them how much you like the songs in the background. Would that take notice that people like it?

Thats cool. But the only reason is on MTV, is cause the bassist in the video is the bassist for Metallica.. Sad but true.

maybe emailing them would be a good idea - it, at the very least, couldn't hurt...and sometimes just a few letters can have a much bigger impact than people may think...

may be true Eric, but, whatever works, ya know? This girl I was talking to loved the song after hearing them on mtv, and would be willing to give the whole album a listen...metallica's bassist may have done this partly as a benefit to the band - he must have known it would cause some of his fans to take a closer look at nc...

The only negative to this is that MTV, like radio stations, will usually ignore requests when they are bombarded with calls, letters, emails, etc. I think this would be especially true when it comes for a band like NC, that currently gets very little play on MTV. So, it would have to be like one or 2 requests a day for it to seem legit.

True. We don't want it to appear like spam *and MTV is reeeally freaking TOUCHY about that kind of stuff anyway. My first post ever on an mtv board was kicked off - lol*. We probably won't get enough people interested to do much more than that anyway...

It is pa-the-tic of MTV to play a video for that reason. that's totally not fair to Nickel Creek-> they're not getting recognized for their talent!!!
GRRR!

Well, any band trying to gain exposure, any reasoning is a good thing. And it's nothing degrating or against their artistic goals *that we as fans know of*, so it's a good thing. Whatever reason they get on for, let them get on, because once there their talent CAN become the focus. You won't get the change for that without actually airing...

Fairly similar to when I was trying to pass out street team materials before an NC concert to businesses, and I gave in and didn't argue with girls who were thrilled cuz they thought sean or chris was cute - didn't care WHAT reason, just wanted to get them into the concert!! lol

:D Well, your two cents count every bit as much as anyone elses!! Thanks for listening :)

:sighs whistfully: I so hope this is a hint of a new beginning; that maybe NC is a guage of the kind of stuff the masses may start demanding, causing stations *like mtv* to either conform *eek. spooky word. feeling hypocritical. ok ok so listen should be the word, this is capitalism after all* or be replaced by either new stations that will listen...

course, I'm quite sure this idealistic dream won't last. At least not until I can start a station! lol

it would be great if NC was what everyone wanted... but it would be upsetting too because i like them how they are now. ... u know, little known but known ... like what if they get popular and play at HuuuuGE venues and dont come out to meet the crowd afterward? that would stink. i like them how they are now. nice, simple, down to earth, perfect. ;)

I totally agree with you! I mean, I want everyone to love them, but what would happen if they did? They couldn't meet everyone after the crowd. And though I don't think they would ever have sucky music just b/c they were famous, it would not be as personal. And if they were in a HUGE auditorium like Blossom or something (It's an ohio thing) then they wouldn't be able to unplug for their encores!!! I know they wouldn't get mean or anything, but still...
It would be nice for them to be on more stations though. Then MAYBE some people would KNOW who I'm talking about! And then they would start listening to thier music, too!

Matt, why did you delete my post about MTV? That took me a long time!!! If it had something offensive in it, just delete that part! That really pisses me off. If you delete my post, then why can't you delete everyone else's? It's only fair, right?

Yeah, right. The masses (assuming you're referring to those who watch MTV and buy CDs) are too stupid to even understand how the economy really works. All they care about is what's cool, and think Boxers or briefs? is a good question to ask a president. They think rappers and movie stars are credible political annalists. If the 'Creek ever does become popular with the ignorant, brainwashed, gimmie, gimmie, gimmie, MTV congregation, it'll be nothing more than like what was presented in the film Josie and the Pussycats. Nickel Creek is the next Dave Matthews!! *bounce...bounce...giggle...giggle* Oh, my God, Sean is so hot!!

*BANG!!!*

Yeah, I know not all young'ns are like that. Thank God there's people like Okie, and others her age, who have parents determined to make sure their kids aren't ignorant morons.

Guys,

I highly doubt that Smoothie was ever on MTV or even MTV2. Somebody probably saw it on VH1 and just got their music channels confused.

I just can't see MTV having the taste (or the balls) to put Nickel Creek on their channel. As much as that sucks, I think its just the way it is.

But I think we've established on these boards many, many times that MTV sucks. And we don't care if Nickel Creek gets on there or not. Because they are totally completely awesome no matter who plays their music.

*sigh* Bryon, I'm afriad I agree with you on this more than I would like to admit; I really REALLY have tried to hold on to some hope for the masses, and for real music or lyrical messages getting through to them. But I really don't disagree with your statement at all...and having just finished Cobain's Journals is not helping - at the moment Im feeling quite anit-MTV and most rock journalists *no offense to any on here, know there are good ones, but you know the ones I'm talking about...*

NCFan4Ever I wondered the same thing, but was hoping it was on MTV, which is actually all this thread started out as. lol. And aside for my current fear of mtv that I'm sure will pass by morning, I still am hoping they do get on, so that the fans who are too afriad to give cmt a try might get exposed to this music...some anti-image talent based stuff might really be good for them...

The thing is, kids who watch MTV will see Nickel Creek and their acoustic instruments and be like What the h***?! What is this sh**!?!? and turn it off. They won't give it one listen. And even if they do see Smoothie Song with the guy from Metallica in it, they won't think Nickel Creek is cool, they'll just think that guy is a wuss. Trust me, I know a lot of kids that would to that. A majority of the MTV viewing audience would do that, mainly because they have no sense in talent.

linzee_nc

I have to agree that most of the mtv viewing audience probably won't get Nickel Creek (*gasp* the lack of shallow lyrics is making my head hurt...where are the dancers..why is that little guitar shaped so funny). However, it would still be really nice exposure to an audience that otherwise may have never even heard of NC. Even if just a small portion of the people went out and purchased a cd, they would spread the word like I'm sure all of us did when we discovered the band.

That's already happened to me, sorta... I told one of my friends that worships Metallica about the bass player in the video and he put his head down and said I can't believe Metallica would go SO LOW! Originally posted by linzee_nc

yep,I was showin another friend of mine (an avid MTV-watcher) my pics of the concert and she said OMG I thought they were a country band! That is one ghetto a$$ guitar that blonde guy has!!

anyways I hope NC wasn't played on MTV. I do watch mtv occaisonally ... but i have enough brains to make my favorite band the one that has talent with instruments, gorgeous harmonies, and wonderful personalities.:p

I agree with Linzee *as usual! lol* If we can expose anyone...I mean this girl I was talking too only knew who they were through mtv...and she's pretty encouraging for me about at least a small percentage of mtv's audience being more open - this girl was into EVERYTHING musically, very very cool!

and, if they get enough mtv exposure, maybe eventually people will start to believe they're cool.... :D

and one more thing - it doesn't look like they're on mtv now *sigh*...but, at least at their site they're getting some exposure...check these links *yay!*

HA HA HA!!!!! That's hilarious!

It would be nice if they gained some mtv audience. I just dont see it happening.

Side note: I love mtv. I watch it all the time. Some of my favorite shows are on that channel. BUT I also realize how mindless, stupid, and pointless all those shows are. And mtv is basically just a source to tell teeny boppers what's cool or not. And mtv is definately not cool enough to appreciate the Creek.

why is that little guitar shaped so funny??

I know exactly what you mean. Before I discovered this site, I used to go on the Nickel Creek forums on CMT.com. And on it was this really stupid person who started several threads with variations of Nickel Creek is gay! The basic jist of what they were saying is, Nickel creek is gay, they're ugly. They're boring. They can't sing, and they're ugly. The blond guy is ugly, and he plays a stupid instrument, what is it? a mini- guitar!
This is, of course, a person who was claiming to be a real country music fan. And they didn't even know what a mandolin was. I think that this response would be even worse for those who listen to the rest of the mindless music out there. I dunno, it just made me think of that. This is such a superficial world we live in, I think NC is a LITTLE too deep for the masses.
But I think that extra coverage by other channels wouldn't hurt any at all.
