I can't answer as I don't play mando (yet ;) ), but I'm interested to see how many people here do take lessons and how many are self-taught (along w/ videos & books of course ;) ) I am hoping to pick up the mando soon myself, but like you, Stephen, I don't have any teachers in my college locale. :(

* For how long? since June... about 6 months, but I taught myself for about 10 months before that.
* Who is your teacher? His name is Ron something
* Do you have a band? No, but I'm gonna start playing with some of my friends from around here, and hopefully that will lead into a band. I want to be in one.
* Who inspired you to play the mandolin? CHRIS THILE of COURSE! Who else is as awesome as him? Ricky Scaggs and Dan Tyminski also played large roles, but Chris continues to inspire me every day.
* What songs have you played or are playing? A bunch of stuff, traditional, celtic, bluegrass, classical (Handel), old Italian stuff. My teacher keeps up the variety.
* What fiddle tunes have you played or are playing? Blackberry Blossom, Devil's dream, red haired boy, a bunch of stuff.
* What is your favorite song to play? Can I pick!? Whatever I have that is new usually has my attention for a time, though.
* Did you hear about Nickel Creek after you started playing? No, before, they are part of what inspired me!
* Do you play any Nickel Creek songs? I've picked a few out by ear, but just recently ordered the sheet music for This Side online.
* Which songs do you play? This side (it's in E which is pretty easy) The Fox, Lighthouse. I'm trying to learn a song that I don't know the title of that was on one of their concert recordings. It's a mando solo that Chris does and its very pretty.

* Do you have a band? No, but I think I'm going to play on a xmas comp of local (Chapel Hill) acts with some friends
* Who inspired you to play the mandolin? Way back when, Peter Buck (don't laugh). But it wasn't until I heard Thile that I was serious.

Losing My Religion (seriously, don't laugh), Spit on a Stranger, Lighthouse, She Can't Complain (one of the greatest songs ever, and definitely my fave NC!!), and am working on the following: This Side, Speak, Green & Grey, I Should Have Known Better, When You Come Back Down, The Rainbow Connection (for my mom :D ), Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (for the xmas comp)
