Chris Thile and Mike Marshall delivered a wonderfully exhilarating and brilliantly executed performance at the Ark (in Ann Arbor, Michigan) on December 15th. The repertoire of this duo is remarkable. In addition to their own impressive tunes (such as Stranded in Kodiak, Harvest Time, and Something Quite Triffling, among others), with passionate fervor they played compositions by J.S. Bach, Charlie Parker, and traditional Eastern European and Brazilian folk instrumentals. The variety of mandolins used was also extraordinary; it was fascinating to see Mike alternate with ease between the mandolin and mandocello. The enthusiasm of these guys is definitely palpable. Chris Thile is clearly consumed by his passion for music, and it was a real pleasure to see him in action (this was my first experience seeing him perform live). Chris also signed autographs and chatted with members of the audience afterwards. He was very cordial, and eager to talk about the rewarding challenges and techniques of playing the mandolin. I have visited the Ark several times this year, but haven't seen it packed like this. It was a truly amazing experience.
