I just got a new CD in the mail that features Sara Watkins in an very cool track. She is the guest vocalist on a new CD by Darol Anger, and she's singing Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. This doesn't sound anything like Nickel Creek, but I like it a lot!

The album will be out in about a month. Here are links for more information:

Sara is backed up by two fiddles, two cellos, and a guitar (Darol Anger and Brittany Haas, Rushad Eggleston and Natalie Haas, and Scott Nygaard, respectively). An amazing collection of string musicians!

britt and natalie are pretty cool as well. [as rushad- but we have talked about him plenty here..] it has been cool to see those 2 sister's playing start to really mature over the last couple of years.... Britt is still in highschool for all you who are jealous of young players.. Nat [technically a guest on this cd] goes to Julliard, tours with alisdar fraiser, and is in a Trio with markoconnor, that has a cd out soon..

Scott is the editor of acoustic guitar mag... if i am not mistaken, i think.. think that is the mag... some itch at the back of my head says i am wrong...

The American Fiddle Ensemble- have been doing stuff for a while now. ;-) glad to see this cd coming out, that i have heard so much about during the recording..!

According to Jon Brion (sp?) Sara will be covering one of his songs on her album. Or she already has. Can't exactly remember. At any rate, she sang it during his set at Sundance.

I'm guessing it's Trouble, but she could cover any of his songs.

It occurs to me that Darol Anger will be at MerleFest this year. So will Nickel Creek and Mark O'Connor's trio. So there is a very good chance that we'll get to see this Stevie Wonder song performed live!

BTW, I don't know anything about Scott's contributions to the publishing world, but as a musician he worked with Laurie Lewis's Grant Street for several years before joining up with Tim O'Brien's O Boys. Scott is one of Sean Watkin's major influences.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up! My little sister's picking up the violin, she's developed a pretty good ear so far. She'll love this.

And yep, Scott edits Acoustic Guitar. Fantastic guitar player.

More Scott Nygaard trivia: he's on Chris Thile's Leading Off album, and has two great guitar albums of his own out on Rounder Records: No Hurry and Dreamer's Waltz. Available on Amazon.

I'd like to say I'm completely surprised there wasn't more talk of this CD after it was released. I totally forgot about it until last week and then I was like ahh! I have to buy it Came in the mail today and the music is superb (but I knew it would be). And of course, the track Sara's on is very good too. I love how the strings seem to emphasize certain lyrics of the song, kind of helping the casual listener along to feel the emotion of it.

I just bought the fiddle ensemble CD last night, and it's already had some serious rotation in my CD player. It's hard to say what blows me away the most--the repertoire (Celtic, bluegrass, Brazilian, African, Scandinavian, and other tunes), or the amazing musical talent of these virtuoso instrumentalists. And Sara's track rocks!!!
