I was looking up tour dates and I noticed that NC's taping policy is no longer there !?!?!?! Did they move it or is audio taping no longer allowed?

I see the taping policy...but if they decide to change it because of the STUPID PERSON on ebay, I'm gonna be JUST A LITTLE MAD.

I see the taping policy...it's there...but if they decide to change it because of the STUPID PERSON on ebay, I'm gonna be JUST A LITTLE MAD. I mean, I can understand why NC would want to change their policy, especially since people aren't following it. But as to WHY you WOULDN'T follow the policy, I don't know. Come on, it's easy enough. You don't do bulk B&Ps, you don't sell shows...it's easy as that. And if this person on ebay is just in it for the money, then they can sell something else that ISN'T illegal.
Stupid people these days...[bang]

That doesn't sound good.
I hope they realize that making the policy even more strict, or even not allow taping or trading of shows, will have the opposite effect. The fact is if shows are harder to come by, then the more likely people are going to buy and sell them. At this point, people are going to tape NC no matter what, even if taping isn't allowed. Eventually they will end up on ebay.
If all NC is looking to do is to stop people from selling shows, then having a more open taping/trading policy would be the best way to go. If shows are easily available then people will have no need to buy or sell shows. They can just trade for them or even DOWNLOAD them for free. I would think that NC would be much happier if a fan downloaded a show rather then paying $50 on ebay.
If they (NC and/or the Record Label) are worried about losing money then they should stop allowing people to tape and start selling their own recording ala Pearl Jam and Phish.
I guess they need to decide if they are worried about making the fans happy, making a buck or making it even harder to find shows so they up on ebay.

Yeah, but even if they went that route, I think that they'd rather people spend the $20 to go and see the show than to download it for free...And that kinda defeats the purpose of live shows if you can just download them.

i don't think it will be a stricter one.. just re-adjusted in some areas...
rememebr 90% of the policy is not about loosing money.. it is more about intelectual properity [same reason here to there is not for sale]

Not really...if the band changes it up and never does the exact same setlist night after night, you're going to want to go to the show anyway, and then you'll ALWAYS try your hardest to get a good rememberance of that show - so what's better than getting a copy of one of the best shows you've been do? Nothing...
Not that it really relates to the change of taping policy, but yeah....and I'm still hungry this is pathetic (and very unrelated, sorry)

If that were true, bands wouldn't put out live CDs.

From my perspective as a taper, taping is not a right, but rather a privelege. The bands that allow taping are doing all of us a favor, and in return, we must abide by their rules and policies. Trading shows is alot of fun for the fans, and in fact, if a friend of mine had not given me a Nickel Creek show, I probably would never have heard of them.
The key word here is give.....I would never in a million years think of selling ANY show, regardless of the band or performer. If a show appears on Ebay, who in their right mind would actually pay for something they can get for free?
One of my favorite things to do is burn several discs before I go to a show, and give them away to unsuspecting show-goers. The look on their faces is priceless when they realize I want NOTHING in return. Share the music that makes me extremely happy. Random acts of kindness. I think this is more in the spirit that Bands have in mind when they allow taping of their shows. It's their music, I'm simply archiving a few hours in time that make me and many others extremely happy! I'm going to buy a ticket and support NC whenever they are performing nearby. I bet you will too.
Buying shows from someone on Ebay, or anywhere, is not only foolish, but jeopardizing a good thing for all of us. One bad apple.......
Please use your heads folks!
Thanks for listening!

Why isn't Here to There going to be re-released again?
Also... regarding that very stupid person on eBay, can someone who has the show offer up a bnp just so that there's even less reason for someone to bid on that darn auction?

you hit it right on
and guys, lets put it in perspective. people have tried to sell creek shows before on ebay... i am surprised how few are actually are attempted to be sold there... i don't' think those few cases are going to cause problems for the rest of you guys..
it i sliek wonderign because a loaf of bread was shoplifted once, the store wont' sell bread to anybody again.. yes the live taping thing is a trust deal with fans.. just don't think that that will do much to it though..

Hello All,
I'm new here and also a taper of concerts for the last 21 years
I am pretty active with Cowboy Junkies (http://www.cowboyjunkies.com),
both recording and sharing their shows on disc
(with Michael Timmins' blessing)
The CJ fans keep an eye on e-bay and whenever someone attempts to sell a CJ concert recording
a post will appear on the CJ message board and then the e-mails start flying to e-bay as well as the bidder.
e-bay to get the item pulled,
the bidder to offer a copy of the show fo free.
This approach has worked real well over the years.
Got to look out for the bands that allow taping!!!
I always make a point of hitting the merch booth of any band
that welcomes open recording of their shows
I'm looking forward to taping NC when they play New West Fest (http://downtownfortcollins.com/festivals.php/nwfest) here in Fort Collins, Co.
hope to see some of you there,
John

I like the idea of watching out for the band. The tapers (and those that benefit from their skills) should have the band's back and keep an eye out for things like this. You know, kind of return the favor to the band in a way.

Wow. That is a cool idea! I've always loved giving music to friends, so that could be a lot of fun to do at the next concert I go to with some people who dig NC also!

Yeah, I hate when people abuse a good trading policy and I hope NC keeps letting people tape, it's definitely a great way to circulate their greatness.
john, do you know if tickets are on sale for that show yet? I saw it on pollstar a couple of months ago, but haven't seen any news on the main tour page. Glad to hear you are cracking down on the ebayers.

They set up a stage right in Linden Street for the three day festival
you just walk up with your lawn chair and grab a spot
We'll set up our lawn chairs and microphone stand
early in the day to insure a good spot for taping

I think NC needs to either re-write their trading policy or banish it all together. What they have right now does NOT work!

Flowerking, I assure you that no one has overlooked your opinion on this matter.
