Hey,
I love Nickel Creek and I REALY love the mandoline!
I really want to start mandoline but I don't know what kind of brands are good for one (for a newbie and pretty good price and good quality) or what kind of books to get to teach myself.
Could someone help me?

Well I am not sure what kind of mandolin would be good(I want to get one too and I could use the help on that subject. Anyone) But I do know that Chris has a how to play mandolin book. I forget what it is called. It is from when he was younger, I think possibly 1999 or something to that affect. Hope you get an awesome mando. I want one really badly, but I have to wait until I get a job to buy my own. My dad won't buy me one since he already bought my fiddle.

Depends on what style your looking for. A and F are the two most popular styles- Chris plays an F-style. While F's are really nice, they can be more expensive. I've been playing about a year now, and I definetly don't know everything about mandos, so you may want to get other opinions. I am having a new mandolin built for me for the symposium. On the way to the builders workshop last month I saw a little music store and I just had to stop. Sure enough, they had a few mandos on the wall. The first one I picked up was an A-style Kentucky. I tell ya, if I wasnt in the process of having one built, I woulda laid down the cash right there! It wasnt the best mando I had ever played, but it was only $200 ([eek!!] ) and it played really well. I would say to go and play as many as you can and choose what you like. Good luck, HTH
