the show in Athens last night (4/2/04) was phenomenal... i just got back to my house and had enough time to sit down and write something about it worth putting up.
the Georgia Theatre was not as crowded as the last time they played in there, but i am almost sure this time it was more actual fans and less people who will just come see anything at the Ga Theatre. because during the acoustic encore everyone was SILENT, prompting Chris to give us a large round of applause and say that is the quietest we've ever heard a room, you guys are great. so there was more appreciation and less heckling and other stuff, which is always great.
as much as i promise myself i will write down a setlist, i never remember to... and again i forgot. but i do know they sang a world premiere... for us at least (Chris said) of Gillian Welch's Caleb Meyer which was amazing. and a great rendition of Beck's Where It's At which i was badly mislabeling in my head as Bad 80s Rap but meant Bad 80s STYLE Rap... and NC gave it a fresh, and humorous sound. it was fantastic. they basically played all of the songs that have been on recent setlists though i was sad not to hear She Can't Complain. and i believe we got another World Premiere of a new one of their songs (correct me someone if i am wrong) called They're Only Pictures which was an AMAZING song... about blackmail!!!
they didn't do a terrible lot of talking on stage oddly enough, but i will be sure to add a list of quotes to the end of this post... because they did get chatty afterwards outside by the bus! which the whole timing of the thing was great. because the show was supposed to start at 9... and the tickets said Mindy Smith was opening (more on that later) and after standing around til 9:30 with no Mindy Smith (this is not later) Nickel Creek finally came on!! they played til 11 when they went off stage the first time, and we brought them back on for another 40 minutes of encore and then acoustic encore. so that took us to about 11:45... skip to outside near the bus:
at first only Sara came out... and stood around for a very long time shivering in the cold and talking to people. one guy came up to her with his cell phone and said my friend couldn't make it, would you say hey to him? and she said SURE!! and then proceeded to talk to him for 15 minutes... seriously. and the guy took a picture of her on his cell phone. so after about 15 minutes of discussing which DVD she and the guys were gonna watch on the bus when they left she said did you get a picture of me to prove it? good... now take the phone back, go over there, and tell him it was not me! hehehehe!! and the guy DID. and everyone had a good laugh. then she disappeared for a minute and came back with her ukelele and played two songs for us, one she just sorta played and the other had words and she called it Sweethearts to Mark a couple of minutes later. then she disapperead back into the bus again and came BACK out with her fiddle and played a tune for Mark to dance to. and she fielded a few questions about the new Album... nothing concrete. then Chris came out to join her on the mando. and shortly thereafter Sean came out to play guitar and Mark even went and got his bass back out from under the bus. they played an instrumental song i do not know, then Atlanta by request from us GA folks, then Chris said they couldn't sing anymore, they could just play and so they then played a song they called Katie Hill and Sara was playing herself out so fast and hard that she outdid herself, messed up, and screamed REALLY loudly FREAKING-A YOU GUYS!!! and then kept playing while everyone cracked up. then she and Sean and Mark went away and Chris stood around talking and signing autographs and such, then he left and Sean came out for the same... and then my group and i left. it was 1:15 then, we had gotten another hour and a half worth of them just because we were all so nice and patient. they even started attracting people from down the street to come stand around... and i am sure the hotdog vendor on the corner was happy for the business.
anyway here's the Quote List, which i will post to the appropriate thread as well!!
Chris: This song is from... sadly our last record and-
Sara: NO! Its not our LAST record, its our LATEST. I mean sheesh...
Chris: Oh yeah sorry, our last record. Man, Nickel Creek is no longer a band (audience silence) ok I'm KIDDING!! Our LATEST record!!

(for the scones quotes fans) There's millions of things you could be doing on a Friday here in Beautiful Athens. Drinking Blue Sky coffee... OH! Or eating amazing Blue Sky scones! I had another... they sent some for me, yay! -Chris

I used to live in Nashville, or rather when I did live in Nashville, we used to call ourselves the Athens of the South. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't ATHENS be the Athens of the South? That's Nashville for you... hm. -Chris

(talking to the two of us while signing my brother's Ticket that said with Mindy Smith) Oh look, that's us! Minus the Mindy Smith part at least, she's not here as you can see. (my brother said yeah we were wondering about that) Well she's not here, but she's really really good you guys, like better live than on her CD. But oh don't tell her I said her CD sucked, she would kill me!!!! Its good, but if you can hear her live you really REALLY should you know? -Sara

(to a girl who said it was her 21st Birthday that night) Oh really? Freaking awesome! You know, I didn't do anything for my 21st Birthday. I think I played a show, so hey! We were both at a Nickel Creek show for our 21st Birthdays! -Chris

(tries to whistle while singing but nothing comes out) *sputtering sound* I am really not that good at whistling, *tiny little noise* Really not that good at all. -Sara

Audience Member, Obviously Drunk: Play Freebird!!
Chris: No, because then... just no. We're not Lynard Skynard, hate to disappoint, but no.

And I believe that's it but if I think of any more I will post them!
by the way, if any of the people on this board were the people taking pictures outside... i would LOVE some if any were worth it!

Sounds like a great show! Nice review! I just wanted to comment that they played They're Only Pictures at the Buies Creek 3/26 show ( which I was at.) Also, at the same show they played Caleb Meyer during their little jam in front of the bus. But as far as playing it during the concert, I believe that's a first. You're lucky because that is a really, really good song.

I was taking some pictures and just happened to have the camera set on movie ;) so I have a really good mpeg of that.

It was an awesome show. Although I think they may be a little worn out by now. Not as much energy through the regular set as the Atlanta show, but the unplugged set was alot better.

I got to talk to sara for awhile a couple of hours before the show and she seemed very tired. You would never know that because she was very nice and talkative after the show.

Not trying to be picky but I think it went more like:

Chris: We are playing alot of new stuff for you guys tonight.
Audience: freebird
Chris: that sir would not be new song would it :audience laughs:
I am sorry if you were lead to believe this was a lynard skynard concert. If you thought this was a LS concert, then I will personally make sure you have your money refunded.

Ouch...I would've been so embarrassed.

nono please go fix it in the Quote Topic also if you care to. My friend and i were sketchy on that one cause in the middle of Chris's talking i said to her but if they stick around a bit, the Led Zepplin Cover Band will be here
:)

Oh yes, and if you got any actual pictures that are good, would you mind sending them along? i went to take a picture outside, when my camera wouldn't come on i looked at it and the batteries weren't dead, they just weren't there. i almost had a fit. [sob]
