This is my first time using this. I met Sean after a concert in Madison Wisconsin. I have always admired his talent but find myself also attracted to his personality (and certainly good looks). Does anyone happen to know his dating status or philosophy? Sounds crazy I know, but you can't blame a girl for trying! Thank you in advance for any information.
Laura
Hi, Laura, and welcome to the board.
The band has asked that we minimize discussion about their personal lives, as they're already sharing themselves with us so much through their music and they'd like to keep that aspect of things private.
Sean isn't married, and I don't know if he's dating or in a relationship. But having a significant other who is in the music business isn't an easy thing, and all of the band members are pretty focused on their careers now, so I'd suggest that it might be easier to keep a lookout in your area... the right person will definitely come along when the time is right!

Oh trust me, I'm not in any way thinking that Sean is going to fall madly in love with me, a 17 year old nobody from a hick town in West Virginia...but my sister asked me how old he was and I couldn't remember. It's definately nice to admire Sean from a distance, though... : )

Hardly Time Band (http://www.hardlytime.com)
Sean is awesome. He's just automatically interesting and he doesn't even try. BUT.....
The best thing about NC's shows, is that when they're on stage, they just turn into these musical prodigies - you're like, in awe.. and so taken by them, star struck even - and then when when they step off stage, and reach out to the fans - they become these totally normal people. You see them for who they are. They talk to you like they're an old friend catching up. Not stuck on themselves, but just interested in what you have to say.
I think they are incredibly humble, and normal people who just happen to be gifted with music. A stage will make ANYONE look like an icon but it's when you're down below with the fans that really says who you are. I think NC has proved themselves HUMAN and UNIQUE all in one. They're just using their God given gifts as best as they can. We all have them :)
Word to Sarah, Chris, and Sean for taking the time to chat w/ us fans! And Sean, you are a doll - even though you'll NEVER read this, thank you for taking a moment to snap a couple pics w/ me and chat w/ me about normal things like snowboarding, so cal, and the mountains :)
peace out! -Kim <>< kimphillips777@aol.com (you can check out my band at www.hardlytime.com)

I agree with everything you said, Kim! One of my favorite things about nickel creek is that they are so humble!
And nitejule, I will agree with you that stalking is bad! LOL!

yes stalkin IS bad, hahah.
i think the way that nickel creek interacts with their fans is something that def sets them apart from other bands. i only know of a few other bands that are nice like that.

You're lucky, i can't think of ANY bands that care about their fans as much as Nickel Creek does! I mean, they're the only band that you can e-mail and actually have a chance to get an e-mail back! I think that's pretty awesome!

 Where did you get Nickel Creek's e-mail addresses. I would love to write to them. Has anyone recieved an e-mail back from one of them? What did they say? I am just curious:rolleyes:

yeah i've gotten several e-mails back from Sara...they're really really short, but still, it's awesome that they take the time to write back at all!

Melanie Time for a reality check here.
At some point, and they are probably there already, NC will have staff, provided by their managers, who answer letters and e-mails. There will be standard replies ready to be mailed or e-mailed to well-wishing fans.
This has nothing whatsoever to do with NC's caring or not caring about fans. It has to do with the fact that there will never be more than 24 hours in the day and they simply cannot physically do everthing.
If you were worn to the nub, tired and weary from being on the bus or performing non-stop....the last thing you probably would want to do would be to read, let alone answer, mail from strangers. And that's a fact. You'd want to chat with your parents or your girlfriends or watch a dumb video for relaxation. This is not meant to discredit our beloved NC kids, it's just reality.
I don't think fans should stop sending letters or e-mails. Just knowing that yesterday, for instance, they got 500 e-mails from happy fans would be enough to make them smile....they really don't have to read each and every one. And you know what? Every fan says just about the same thing.
When I worked for a prominent person, daily mail was sorted into these big, grey buckets. One bucket for general well wishing. One bucket for complaints about subject A. Another about complaints about subject B. Etc. There was no way he could read them all or draft answers to them all. He was told how many letters (or calls) came in on each subject and we'd give him samples to look at. But what was important to him was....how many people liked such and such a thing....how many didn't. Staff did the actual responding.
There is no way we can keep NC small and personal and intimate, much as part of us would like to do this. We'd like them to perform in our city, in our favorite coffee house, where we can see them up close, talk to them, get to know them. But they've gone past that, thanks to their awesome talent, and we have to be happy for them. Years from now, we can say: Well, we knew them WHEN! We were fans long before most people ever heard of them! We saw their awesome talent long before the world did. So there!
So keep those e-mails and letters flowing.

Who ever said that we were unhappy that they were getting famous? I mean, to me, that seems like something to celebrate! I don't want Nickel Creek to keep preforming in little cofee shops and small, 500 seat venues. I want to see them in big arenas with thousands of people screaming for them. I want them to have to send form letters to their fans because there's no way they can answer all their mail personally. I want them to become huge, mega superstars and show everyone that bluegrass IS cool!
But that doesn't mean that I can't be happy that once, when they were not so huge, I got an actual email from one of them! That they took the time to write ME, a lowly little nobody from nowheresville, and let me know that they appreciated my e-mail! Sure, I know they've sent the same wishes to the hundreds of other people who have gotten e-mail replies from them. I know I'm nothing special. But when I open my maibox to see an email from the band that I am so in love with, it's something for ME to be excited about. I mean, the last email that I got from Sara, probably about a year or more ago, said Alright! Thanks Melanie! and that was enough to keep me smiling for weeks.
I agree that the last thing they probably want to do at the end of the day is write to adoring fans. Trust me, I don't need a reality check in that department. But the fact that they DO answer fans even though they would probably much rather be sleeping says alot about them. Yes, we know they love their fans. Yes, we would love them even if they didn't take the time to write back. But the fact is, right now, or at least up until recently, they have written their fans. And that says alot.
As far as I know, emails to the band go *to the band* and are read, most commonly by Sara. (Chris almost never checks email, and Sean less often than Sara).
I don't think they have anyone responding for them, except that the webmaster of nickelcreek.com (who gets a cc on mail to the band) may occasionally respond if it's an easily answered question... but then the response is from the webmaster, not from someone signing the band's name.
Nickel Creek is still very connected to everything that happens around them... until very recently, their personal manager didn't even have an assistant and handled everything himself, and there's still one person doing just about everything connected with the upkeep of nickelcreek.com.
Most artists I'm aware of, if they provide an email address, will generally read (and sometimes respond) to mail sent to them... it's different if you're mailing to the artist's fan club or whatever, and of course, that doesn't apply to the handful of artists that sell multiple millions of records ('NSync and Backstreet Boys come to mind). But you might be surprised how many popular artists do actually read and respond to their email.

Melanie...good post (because I agree with most of what you said!)
And, as I said, I still believe at some point (Chip says they aren't there yet) they will not be able to personally read and respond to fan mail and e-mail. I don't believe many celebs are able to, much as they'd like to and much as they might get a personal boost from it. And much as some will say they read every letter and respond to the letters themselves. Impossible.
We're arguing degree of participation here. I just think it's less than you guys think. As bands/artists gain popularity and their fan base quadruples and the years go by....fan mail becomes a given they know exists and they appreciate. But I don't believe very many celebs are able to read or respond to fan mail except on an occassional token basis. I don't fault them for this at all.
Are we having a happy Fourth? Why are we here chatting. We should be out parading or something.....

HA HA! A Happy Fourth? Here's what I got to do today...I went to work at the standard burger joint where i have a part time job. I was very happy because I was supposed to work 5 til close, and we closed at 7 because of the holiday. usually, it takes about a half an hour to close the place down because there are supposed to be three people working. WELL, guess how many people called off? Two...and the only one left was the owner of the store, so I got to stay till 9:30 closing the place down myself! ARGH! Yes, I know that this is a NICKEL CREEK discussion board, but I just had to vent a little. why won't people just come to work when they're supposed to?!?!

What's wrong with stalking? I like it-it's quite adventurous...
I hope you know I am totally kidding-I was just going to post that and see what kind of responses I got-haha-but then I decided not to-it might ruin my internet reputation :-)
Although Sean is extremely hard to talk to , he IS very nice and yes, he is nice to admire from afar and yes, every time I meet him I probably scare him, but it's OK because it's fun!
please forgive me-I am running on major sleep deprevation and lots of coffee

Melanie....the absolute exact same thing happened to my grandchild yesterday....as two people called in sick and she got stuck minding the whole deli counter all by herself. She suspects the other two will show up today with new coats of tan from being at the beach....
On-topic....Sean and Sara are scheduled to do a publicized jam session at a downtown spot next week. They have both mentioned how much they enjoy doing these, with fellow musicians from this area. I know Sean is a jazz fan. I'm hoping I can get a member or two of this household (we are a three-generational household) to go with me. If I get there, I'll let you know how it went.....and if we get to shake hands with S and S!
