74 DAYS AND COUNTING!

Oooo boy Glen Phillips and Nickel Creek! It'll be my third Creek show; first Glen.

I'm excited beyond belief. But I've never heard of the Beachland Ballroom. On the nickelcreek.com schedule it says it's general admission, standing room only. Is it a small venue? Does anyone know approximately how many people can attend the show?

and finally:

Who else is planning on being there?!

rlb330
05-28-2004, 07:56 PM
It's a fairly small venue. I've been to two concerts there and it reminds me of a high school gym with a raised stage in front. I find it odd that they chose that venue because it's not in a great area of town and the acoustics of the place are *terrible*. The sound setup of the two concerts I went to consisted of a microphone sitting in front of an amp.

I'll definitely be there though. ;-)

Edited to add:

Allison.....I just went to buy my ticket and I see it's an 18 and over only show. Did you know that?

I'm thinking about making the 2 hour trip to come, but I've never heard anything by Glen so I'm a little hesitant. Of course, it is with NC also, so I'm sure it'll be great. Also, its only 2 days after I get back from the symposium so I'm sure I'll be tired, but in the mood for more mando! lol

I am so incredibly pumped. I've been to the tavern side of Beachland Ballroom building, but not the ballroom side, although I'm sure it's pretty small.
Definitely check out Glen Phillips and Toad the Wet Sprocket. If you decide to make the trek, mandolinquent, I'm sure it will be worth it! YAY!!! [party]

Why would they do an 18+ show? Is it just the venue? I can't believe this!! What can I do, guys?!

I just went and checked the website and found this blurb:

Most Beachland shows are 18+, though on rare occasions we have all ages or 21+ shows. Exceptions are made for those accompanied by a parent or legally responsible adult

I think you'll probably be good to go if your dad takes you. You should probably call them and make sure first though.

Em1120
05-31-2004, 02:28 PM
I know, that does stink... the only reason I could think of is that it's really, really small (not the best place for them to play in my opinion, but...) and they needed to put some sort of restrictionon the show? I actually wanted to take my little sister, but she's under 18. I don't know... :(
Maybe someone else would have an idea.

Oh, gosh okay! I hope the show's not sold out yet or something... errr I'm on it! I think we'll call in a little bit, or would it be closed on Memorial Day? Gahhhhhh

Yep...Well, this summer, I'm missing my fourth NC concert due to age restrictions...I missed the one in NYC in November 2003, and now I'm gonna miss one in Boston and the double night in NYC this summer...[sob] I know how ya feel.

wow, that really sucks!
kinda makes me mad that some big fans like you guys who just love the band and the music can't go to the shows, just so some jaded, cynical middle age person who could care less about nickel creek can go half-listen and have their beer.

k maybe i'm a bit cynical myself...but seriously.

NO, seriously; you're right! ...and those people are the ones who ruin the recordings of live shows with their groans and annoying shouts of song requests that the band has no intention of playing! But like Rachael said, I might be able to go to the concert if my dad takes me (as I was planning! There's no way in heck my parents were letting a 15-year-old downtown by herself, and neither did I want to go by myself! haha) I emailed the Ballroom last night and my dad is going to call later today.

I have to agree with that... The worst I remember was down at the Tall Stacks Festival. We were surrounded by drunk middle aged men and women. We could barely hear the show at all! It was probably my least fav Nickel Creek show for that very reason (of couse NC was great).
I really hope you get to go, obsessed! I'm sure you'll be able to work something out. :D

so...18-20 year olds are allowed in, right?

I've been to countless shows at the Beachland, and I'm rather intimately familiar with the room. The Beachland is an old ethnic ballroom (Croatian, to be precise), and the acoustics of the room are WONDERFUL. The sound guys are generally good, though the quality can vary depending on which person is in charge on any particular evening.

The owners, Cindy and Mark, bought it in early 2000 and have done a great job of turning it into a music club. They feature a lot of different kinds of music, some of which I love and some I won't touch. But they've managed to make it successful, which is more than a lot of new club owners are able to do. The food's pretty good, too.

Glen Phillips has been there several times in the past, but always solo. Frankly, it's probably too small a room for the MAS show, so it will probably sell out quickly. But it's a really nice club, and I think it's going to be a great show.

I wish I could tell you more about their age policies. I often bring my daughter to shows there - in fact, we'll be going there together this Friday to see Mindy Smith - but I've never asked them about their policies toward teens without parents. If I get the chance, I'll ask about it and report back.

I'll most definitely be making the trip from Indy. It's the closest show since Tall Stacks last fall. I'm really hoping that since this is the first leg of the tour I'll be able to catch them in Indy as well. I'm not holding my breath though. If I had to deal with the crappy concert crowds in Indy I don't know that I'd go either. Anyway, got my tickets and I'm really excited to see the show. Glen & NC together is always a good show. Then again, any Glen show or NC show together or apart is a good show. :)

Two tickets! Yay, my dad is taking me. My mom doesn't do concerts, lol. When I called Beachland the guy was really nice and said under 18 was allowed with a guardian. He also said the tickets were going fairly quickly and to buy them as soon as possible.

She confirms that those under 18 are welcome at the Beachland (for the MAS show) as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

For that matter, the same is true for tonight's show. We're really looking forward to seeing Mindy again!

I just got the latest media PR blurb from the Beachland. It has some interesting news about the MAS show. I would assume that these same special guests will be working with MAS throughout the tour, not just in Cleveland. Here's what it had to say:

Tues. Aug. 10 The Mutual Admiration Society featuring Chris Thile, Sara Watkins and Sean Watkins (of Nickel Creek) and Glenn Phillips (of Toad The Wet Sprocket) and very special guests Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions) on drums and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) on bass 8 PM, $25, Ballroom, non-smoking show

Chris made everyone put their cameras away at the Kent State show he did with Mike Marshall. Hopefully he won't do that this time. I couldn't find the charger for my good camera, so I'm stuck with my little mini camera with no zoom. I hope I can get close enough to get some decent pictures.

OMG. That show was incredible!!! I loved All I Want Anthony Going to California and Chris' Bach thing. Sad that the encore wasn't acoustic but whatever... I like Glen a lot now. Anyone have the full setlist?

I was dared by my friends to kiss Chris and get a picture. Nicely he declined because he was married but so I kissed Sean! Ahahaha I was like Sean, I have a weird question... (and this time he wasn't grumpy after the show) and he looks at me and I said I was dared to kiss you and get a picture THE WHOLE CROWD GOES ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh and so he says Of you kissing me? and I said Yep and he grinned and said Okay!! But a tame one! and everyone laughed. So I kissed him on his cheek and my dad took a picture. I'll post it tomorrow (wednesday afternoon) when I get them on the computer.

We left after I met Chris and Glen because I have a meeting to go to in the morning for school. Did anyone stick around long enough to see if there was a little concert or whatnot? Or to see if Sara came back? I didn't like the band being behind that makeshift guardrail and the security and stuff... blah.

Every Nickel Creek show I go to is better than the last!! This one was soooo entertaining!!! I love Nickel Creeeeek!!!!

[eta] forgot to mention where I was standing... right in the center, 2nd row I guess... I was one person from the stage

[eta] Did anyone else see Chris and JPJ before the concert drive away in that red Subaru thing? LOL.. and afterwards my dad and I were pulling out of the parking lot, there Chris and Fielding were, right in the bar!!! It was funny. I waved.

[eta] Chris also said to look for an East Coast symposium in March!!

Great show- loved the Fox medley at the end. My husband (who has become more accepting of the mando since I returned from the symposium) really loved the Zepplin stuff they did, and he liked John Paul on the mando a lot. However, it seemed like everyone at the show went to the bus and I remember in Kent it was very few people. This meant not too many autographs were signed, but I cant complain just getting home from a week with Chris. The crowd was different this time, it seemed many were there for John Paul Jones. No, no jamming at the bus, I think because of the big crowd. Plus, Sara (and I think Chris too) had friends there. Sara did eventually come back and come out to sign a few things. And at the very end John Paul Jones did come out. Weird seeing 2 police officers providing security, but I guess its better to be safe than sorry. Overall, different crowd than a creek show, but still rocking!

The concert really blew me away, all of their voices are so much stronger live! Sara & Glen particularly. The opening number and the Fox were awesome!

Meeting them afterward was crazy. I'm not one to get worked up about meeting someone, but for some reason when I met Sara I was super nervous! I gave her a song I wrote and she seemed very nice and patient in talking to me, but i felt like she was thinking Are you going to be ok!?![bang] Then meeting Glen and Chris was cool, down to earth and nice... I behaved myself much better with them. :)

On a side note, I had great conversation with a couple (i think they were a couple) from Toledo, and there was a girl behind me who I deemed to be 'the most beautiful woman i've ever seen.' Naturally, I didn't talk to her [bang] [bang] [bang] [bang] .

All in all, this made for a very eventful night! Lots of fun!

08-11-2004, 01:42 PM
Yeah, I really wanted to chat with them, thank them for a great show... but I didn't like how the bus was roped off and there was a mob of people around it. I'm just over 5 feet and couldn't see, not to mention get remotely close to them after the show. I was actually thinking about having them sign the cd sampler but so much for that. I didn't matter though. It was an awesome show and they always leave me wanting more... [noise]

Just an FYI- the show is up now and it's a great recording!

Thanks for sharing it with us all. The show was freaking awesome- my first show in over a year due to the stupid midwest location of Indianapolis. (I had to drive over 5 hours just to get to this one- but it was well worth it.) I only wish it was somehow possible to bottle up even just a little of the passion that is so contagious when they're playing. Gallows Pole was one of the best numbers I've ever seen them do. Amazing.

For the past 25 years, I've been doing a weekly folk music show on the radio here every Saturday morning. WRUW brought me in to do the show because I knew something about music, and I guess I've learned a bit more in the intervening decades.

In addition, I am a recording engineer for a couple of local non-commercial stations. (And I'll have more on that topic here in a few weeks). That's one of the reasons that I'm so familiar with the Beachland - I've recorded quite a few shows there over the past few years.

Lizbeth, wasn't that you that I met in while waiting in line in Cinci at the NC concert there a year and a half ago? If I'd known you were at the Cleveland show, I'd have tried to say hi. I probably saw you there, but after almost two years, I don't really remember what you look like.

Jimmie- I think I did meet you- I'd totally forgotten about that. That Cincy show ranks up as one of my favorites. I didn't ever come across any recording of it however. Anyway- sorry I didn't say Hi. I would've been the same way about trying to recognize anyone after a year or two has passed. I actually haven't been on the forum much, so I didn't really know how many from around here were planning to go to the show. Hopefully we'll get another show in the midwest in the spring that I won't have to drive for 5 hours to catch. :)
