I used to, until my riding instructor took a vacation in Hawaii and decided to never give lessons again.[think har That was about a year and a half ago, and boy do I miss it.:(

what was your discipline? i love to rope a lot. it was easier for me to learn without an instructor. ah ridng is fun, you should start riding again.
lil_nc_chick
ps, thanx for replying.:D

Oh believe me I would if I could. The barn I rode at no longer allows lessons to be held there either and I don't have the money for a horse. I've alread determined when I get older I'm going to be the really cool lady down the street who has a horse and gives lessons to neighborhood kids. My own children are going to think I love my horse more than them...and it'll be true. :D jk
I rode both Western and English and I can't say that I liked one over the other. My instructor liked to use me to work the horses Western b/c I could get them to work slow and her other students couldn't. I liked Western because I was more concerned about what my horse was doing. But English always gave me a good workout and I was usually more concerned about my positioning. So I rode whatever I felt like that day, and if my instructor needed the horse to have a specific workout.
How long have you been riding?
lil_nc_chick
06-03-2004, 08:03 PM
i have been riding for quite a long time. maybe before i was a year old (that was the first time i guess you could say that i took intrest in the beloved creatures and set on one's back). so i guess you can say i am living the Kentucky dream lol.
i orinally was western but in my later years i began riding english on my appaloosa (he was a fox hunting horse). but because his sire was a western horse he is naturally western. so i am back to western now. english gave me cramps in my knees from being scrunched up. i had the same worrying of position :(.
western is a lot easier for me becuz i am a mere 5 foot tall. yet i sometimes still have to climb on a nearby gate to jump on to my horse. so what breed of horse do you fancy?
location may play a large role in what type of horse you want. since i live in kentucky, where most ppl ride english, a stock horse is kinda hard to find, but they tend to have a small price. but that is what i gathered.

I would think that Western would be harder for you and English would be easier at your height! I am 5'9 so Western was fun when I wanted to get a nice stretch--anytime I went back to English I felt like my knees were around my ears lol:p
Most popular breeds around here are generally Quarters and Arabians. The best horses I've ridden have always been a mix of those two. I have a friend who hates Arabians because she thinks they're snobby--I happen to think they've some of the sweetest dispositions. The Arabians I've always ridden have been so sweet, personable, and obliging. But, then again, I'm a tad biased.;)
In my particular area, you can find a good homebody for a relatively low price. I live in VA, and we've our fair share of rolling farmlands & expansive stables. In my area, there's a pretty good market for a steady horse kept for pleasure. And though my family could afford it if we really wanted to, it's just not prudent. I'm away at school 7-8 months out of the year and no one else in my family rides. One day, though, one day.:D

i love just about all breeds of horses. so you kinda want a national show horse? at least that's what a friend of mine told me. with my horses, they are bad spoiled. [bigeyes] This sometimes creates a problem. [bang]
english might be easier if i were a jockey:rolleyes:.lol i love western because it has my great love, roping. do you do like the western pleasure? thats has all the loose reins. western is/was easier for me because thats how i started riding. this is fun. it is so fun to talk about horses.

I've been into horses for years (so glad you started a horse thread:)).
I'm riding a 15 hand-high tri-colored paint, but he's the perfect hight for me cause' I'm only 5'2:D We've also got 2 mustangs, a huge Quarter Horse and a mustang/Appy filly. Lots o' fun!! I mostly ride western pleasure.
lil_nc_chick
06-04-2004, 02:36 PM
yay! i love to rope and rein as i said before. :-)) lets see i have a registered appy and a registered quarter horse. then i still have my first pony, which was given to me as a present at birth.
so have shown yet? i cant show my appy because he literally has a mohawk. but i wouldn't change his mane. this is so good that i can talk to a few people about horses. does anybody else in your family ride?

She's bay and just getting little white spots all over, so cute:rolleyes:

do ya think she'll be a true leopard? that specific coloration is hard to find in any spotted breed.
lil_nc_chick
wilwaren
06-04-2004, 08:13 PM
True Leopard? I doubt it, it's kinda funny though how she has more spots on her front than on her rear. Her dad was bay with a butt blanket and her mom is bay. It'll be interesting to see how she finally turns out...
lil_nc_chick
06-04-2004, 08:18 PM
she maybe end up being a varnish roan. but who knows. thats the beauty of loud colored horses. you never know what color they'll turn out to be.

LOL!
I was just readin through this thread because I love horses. I've never had one though. I've always lived in town, so we never could have a horse. My parents always say that they would love to move to the country and get a horse, but they never do it. GRRR  .
LOL!
Anyway, the reason I posted, was because the way that Wilwaren's horse is standing just reminded me of the donkey in Shrek 2 when he turns into a stallion. He stands like in the exact same way that that horse is!
I just thought that was kinda funny.

Whoa, step away for a minute and this thread explodes!:) No I'm not interested in a show horse at all, really. I am looking for something that is a pleasure ride, basically. Something that can provide me with a bit of a challenge (not looking for a push-button ride, here), but nothing hardcore. I just love to ride, I'm not very competitive.:D
I love western and if I had shown, I would have gotten into the trail riding competitions. I liked the challeneges those posed to the rider in making sure that communication lines are open.
Sooooo jealous, Wilwaren! You've got a real beauty there! How old is he?
wilwaren
06-04-2004, 09:54 PM
Diego is 4 years old.
What'd you name your appy Brit?
lil_nc_chick
06-04-2004, 09:59 PM
the breed is called that just for the reason that they were meant for shows. you just need a young appaloosa(or any stock horse). mine appy was/ is a challenge to ride. but as they get older they become complete sweetheart, just like my appy.
i love to ride horses that are push button and hardcore ride. my career goal is to train horses, so i need experience like that. i get an adrenline rush when my horse(s) are that way.

T.R.'s Conclusion. i have no idea what t.r. stands for, but the marking on his head is a t stripe. very fitting name for your horse wilwaren. i got t.r. when he was 5 yrs old. so i didn't name him that. he responds to tr and 'leave me alone'. thats only because he can be a really annoying horse.

hello. there is something really bad that happens to walking horses as most of you know. it's called soring.
fyi: soring is when gaited horse traniers delibertly cause pain their horse's front legs by putting shoes on the horses that set them uneven. these evil trainers also use chemicals such as kerosene on their horses legs to make them sore so the horse lifts it's legs up to it's chest. chains are also used that are heavy.
this creates great anger in me along with other horse lovers  . and i am asking you horse lovers what you think of the situation at hand.

have you ever seen, like, show horses that kinda... 'prance', they take really high steps... ok... well some trainers use REALLY cruel methods to get them to do that. yeah.
ok, we can change the subject if you'd like, cause' I failed terribly on explaining it...
lil_nc_chick
06-10-2004, 09:52 PM
dont worry! i will clue you in about soring. it is an evil deed done to horses with a gait that other horses dont have (i am talking about walking horses which are gaited).
basically its a horse trainer that puts chemicals, chains, and shoes that are padded to about 9 to further animate a gaited horse's natural gait. it hurts the horse extremely bad. i will find a pic of one of these horses.

yeah i know. in my area there are a lot of walking horses, but i dont think they're sored. the soring laws in kentucky are pretty strict. the picture i posted is sorta what you might see at a big lick show. i'm going to find a picture of a sored horse. well it should make anyone mad. [grumpy]
they do this for money and just to pull the horse's legs up higher to win. it's sad that this can permentally damage a horse's legs.
and its painful too [ouch]

Hope ya'll don't mind me changing the subject but....
What is your favorite breed of horse?
For me (excluding my Diego of course)... I really like Appaloosas, Peruvian Pasos (I think soring is most common in this breed), and some Arabians... I'm picky about Arabs... any of ya'll heard of Silverado Bay? You can go HERE (http://www.tiffanyranch.com/stallions/silver.html) to see pics but they're all bad, he's really beautiful in person.
Anyway, give me opinions!!!

how stupid of me, I don't know what I was thinking... My favorite breed of horses of all time would have to be Friesians. I've always wanted a big, black friesian... considering that a good one would set me back roughly $10,000 it doesn't look like it's gonna happen anytime soon... but I can dream:rolleyes:
I mean, you have to admit, this is a pretty fine horse...

Diego is a gaited horse. :D
i have that is the most amazing ride that i have ever experienced
Sorry, but could you re-phrase this please... I'm a bit dense... Is TR gaited?? Or am I just missing the point all together? [think har
[splat]I feel really stupid right now[splat]
imo friesans way surpass arabians in the elegance department... as they do with all other horses, though arabs would probably be next on the list.
lil_nc_chick
06-13-2004, 09:21 PM
thats what i meant about friesians. tr isn't gaited, but someone who wanted me to show a walker had me ride one, and that by far is the smoothest ride i have ever experienced[bigeyes] . unfortunatly i didn't end up showing the walker.

My favorite breed of horse is the Palamino. I think they are sooooo pretty. I just love em.
Here is a pic of one. So pretty!

My aunt owns two horses although I'm not sure exactly what they are...My aunt does jumping and is actually pretty good. I've only riden some, but would like to do more! My aunt practically runs the horse show where she goes...I might even get to go and help out...you know say whether or not a horse jumps.
All I know is one is huge and really scary to stand next to because it could probably break your foot very easily! I'll have to ask her what kinds of horses they are.

your aunt's horses are probably warmbloods. i used to jump with my appy, but it was more like a steeplechase[yell]. yep it was to fast to clear a jump gracefully.

Aww, I'm sorry that you miss jumping. You sound like a person that is truly passionate about horses. Why don't you jump anymore?
lil_nc_chick
06-24-2004, 10:24 AM
well i am very passionate about horses. i kinda still do jump because if the smallest tree branch falls T.R. jumps, instead walking around it  .
heres why i dont jump: T.R. clips the jump pretty bad with his hooves. it caused his front hooves to become split. [eek!!] its isnt very fun for him. [sob] if he isn't happy, no ones happy:D (this can mean he will destroy anything he can).

Ya, that might be a problem if he started to destroy everything :D !

Well I'm not sure this count's as funny but here it goes...
The first (and ONLY I might mention) time I fell off a horse: My sister and I were riding our horses in the back yard bareback (well, on those bareback pad thingys) and one of the horses in my neighbor's yard spooked which scared the gelding that I was on and he bolted and my bareback pad slipped and went underneith his belly and I tried to stable myself by grabbing onto his neck, but everything happened so fast that I slid around in front of him.... he was a always very protective of me and stopped right away, which was good considering had he been a different horse he could have toppled right over me.
*trip down memory lane*
That's one of those horses I'll ALWAYS regret selling, a wild mustang, bounciest trot EVER. We were bonded, even before we trained him he was always kinda watching out for me... sounds wierd, but it's true. Once we rode over to a neighbor's house and they had a big German Shepherd that started to run towards me barking and instead of spooking and running back the horse ran in front of me which scared the dog off....
Sorry 'bout that, once you get me started it's hard gettin' me to shut up:D

Yeah, I'm ok riding bareback (as long as there is no trotting;)), but those bareback pads are slipery.

Its kinda hard to be obsessed with horses when you haven't ever had the chance to actually take care of them, and ride them, and love them. HAHA! Ya know what I mean. I'm sure if I had a horse I would be just as obsessed as all of you!
