OK guys, I'm a complete klutz when it comes to playing musical instruments, but I was wondering...for outstanding musicians such as Chris, Sean, and Sara, does it really matter what kind of instrument you're using? Like, does Sara have to have a specific kind of fiddle or will she sound the same on any of them?

she would rock on a piece of junk you got at a thrift store. the instrument never makes the musician. that being said, great musicians want great intruments so they can play and sound the best they can. but dont think b/c she plays a great instrument that it's the instrument that makes her good. it's all about God-given abilities and practice practice practice.

I bet Sara could play a cardboard box with three pieces of rope tied onto it and still ROCK!

When one first starts learning to play an instrument, the instrument needs to be properly set-up and adjusted, or it will just frustrate the student. Beyond that, an expensive instrument isn't going to make a beginner play better. But as one gains in ability, a lesser quality instrument acts as a barrier to one's quality of sound and needs to be upgraded so that one can grow musically. However, some pro's can do just fine with an ok instrument (depending on their musical styles, ect.) Classical violinists tend to use more expensive instruments than fiddlers because of the wider range of techniques and tone colors usually required for that style of playing.
