View Full Version : MAS In Seattle Review

Okay first of all I'll post pictures later, like when I have the time to upload and resize them...anyways

So Seattle was freakin' awesome - as it should be. Everything basically played together for the whole time (with a few exceptions which would be one of Sara's original songs which she played on a uke and Glen, JPJ and Chris sang back-up on), Sean & JPJ's doing a mando-guitar version of umm...crap I can't remember the name of the Led Zep. song, and a very special guest who's name escapes me which is bad because I know who he is...playing a few songs as well (which was a cool little surprise) I never knew Glen was such an instrumentalist...haha, no, I mean I was really impressed when he would play guitar during NC songs (I had a fear he'd leave the stage as folks had said he did during Largo when NC did their songs), and not only that but he busted out the dulcimer (I believe) and a resonator guitar. I was thoroughly impressed to say the least.

As always, I'm a nut and made my friends wait with me after the show by the bus. We must've been there for at least an hour - but ummm...we definitely entertained ourselves (if anyone saw us, I'm sorry...we were very immature that night, and I was supposed to be the chaperon. Wow I sucked at that - I let my friend Anne light a lighter on Travis's Pants and made Travis dance around on the sidewalk). Anyways, Sean came out for literally two minutes and signed a few autographs (he said he had friends waiting). He asked if anyone had a pen, which I did so I gave him a silver paint pen and he signed. Then I gave him the invation thing that I made to promote the show, which for a second he thought I wanted to get signed, but nope. I mentioned that when I gave out the cards to random people, they thought it was a love note & I'm like <wink> right <points at person & smiles> which made him laughed. Anyways, I got my Let It Fall CD signed and with the exception of him for some reason being surpised that I gave him the paint pen, that was about it.

Sara and some friends walked into and then out of the bus, but that was it...so there was no Sara-story there. A few minutes Chris came out and I also gave him the invitation and then he was like I remember you from the last Seattle show and I was like yay, I feel loved LOL (but now I'm wondering if that's a GOOD thing or a bad thing that he rememebered me...haha) and I also gave him pogs which made him go POGS! I used to play with those when I was a kid! and I was like yeah, me too And then he asked if anyone had a pen, so I gave him one of my paint pens, but it wasn't opened yet and so he opened it up and tried to sign and was like uh oh it doesn't work to which I was explaining the whole you have to push down hard and write while it's still in, but he was trying to do that while signing, so I gave him a piece of cardboard scratch paper to work on and it worked. Then he signed my Let It Fall CD and I was basically done, and someone asked if he would sign something and Chris was like Well, that depends on how long she (meaning me) stays around to which I was like huh? then Oh, no, you can keep the pen which for some reason surprised him...*shrugs*

Then Glen came out so I talked to him for a bit (and also gave him one of those invitations which btw everyone kept asking how I got them/if I made them - to which a security guard asked if he could gave one so I was like sure!). Then he signed my CD and I told him how I was glad to have finally gotten to see him played after all these years of wanting to but not being able to go because of not having enough money or watched my nephews. Then I thanked him/said I was so happy that he played Somewhere Out There and he gave me a smile/nod like yeah, I know - if you know what I'm talking about.

Then later the security guard guys were like if you all line up in a straight line JPJ'll come out and sign - to which I decided to talk to 'em and said So you guys don't get much recognition. You're really underappreciated, that must be a hard job so then they were like uhh yeah, actually. I get cussed out for no apparently reason, just doing my job. And so I was like well thank you guys, I really appreciate what you do and then they were talking about JPJ and I was amused by that. And then JPJ came out and I was in line and saw Glen had come by the bus again so I was like Making rounds again, I see? and he was talking to some guy who was saying how he sayd Glen a bunch of times and when he opened for John Mayer back in the day to which I looked at him like umm...you've got that mixed up (which is also the look Glen did) and Glen was like you mean when John opened for me? which I was like yeah that's what he means haha. And then I was telling him how a friend of mine actually interviewed him back then and John was there as well and he kept answering the questions as his lawyer -- when I said that that at first he had a confused face then I said his lawyer and Glen's like oh! That was <forgot what he said> haha and that John was a cocky guy. And Glen was like You're the one who made the cards right? And I was like yeah and he was holding one in his hand and I so I thought he was signing someone elses and then he asked if my name was Anne and I was like No, It's Jennifer (but that's understandable because he just got it a little mixed up with my firend haha) and he was like oh oops! good thing I asked haha. And then he opened up that card and told me that everyone got together and signed the card for me because I guess they appreciated the work done and then he put thanks Jennifer on it and told me that I should thank the two sec. guards because they helped do that for me and I was like Yeah those guys are cool. And then was like And thank you guys. And thinking how sweet that was, because damn, it really was...haha. Then I asked if he'd ever play South Dakota since I'm moving there and mistook that I was asking about MAS and mentioned they were only doing those shows already booked and that the Dakota's don't generally get toured. You just don't touch North Dakota and I was like yeah but I'm talking about South Dakota LOL And I was telling him how that sucked though because SD is beautiful and has such great venues and that it's really a shame there's really shows there. And he said he'd eventually get there, and so I told him that when he does I'll promote the show and he'll have thousands of people going Glen, Glen you rock. And he smiled and was walked away.

So then I went to JPJ and got him to sign an auto for Shannon and that was about it (well then I thanked the sec. guard guys and we all left). I wish I could've talked to NC longer, but I understand they had friends and they probably wanted to have some fun in Seattle before leaving...besides, it's like what time #3 that I've met 'em anyway. Either way, it was cool stuff and you guys are SO in for a treat when you go to the MAS shows! :-D

hey, nice (long-winded) post, i always like hearing after-show stories. got any more about the show itself? like that sara-original song? or how they sounded compared to the MAS cd? i'd be interested :)
i guess you're probably not the only one who's been to a show and posted anything about it, but if you want to tell more anyway be my guest :)

Sara's song, well let's see --- I swear that I've read about it here on the board previously as well, but basically I think the subject matter was about guys inability to commit? I don't quite remember LOL

For the record I LOVE the MAS CD, but holy freakin' crap, the show TOTALLY blew it away. Everything was just amazing and seemed to fit so perfectly together. I just couldn't get enough for the mix of instruments, and as I think I said before I was totally impressed by Glen Phillips and his multi-instrumental ability.

Anyways, I'm gonna start posting the eh-y pictures that aren't gonna make it on the website, but that aren't total crap either :)

The sound was way more full than the CD because of JPJ's heavy bass and the great drumming of Pete Thomas. Look for the song Taxman to blow the doors off of the show..... Chris just takes off like a rocket and the bass, drums and Sean's guitar are very progressive. I think that all of you know what to expect.... the musicianship is great.... Glen does most of the vocals... the harmonies are just a tad weak... I think that this show will improve every night..... the later in the tour the better!!! Have fun, we did!!!:)

Great show. Could of been a better experience, but I did enjoy the performance. The only reason I didn't enjoy it is because I and two other people taped. We tried to tape from the main floor but some guy would not shut up so we had to move to the balcony. I mean I would have been cool if the guy would have been more civil, but for 10 minutes he was just talking on and on. Really annoying.

Anyways, it was great to see the band. I was expecting something different. I thought Glen would leave during the NC songs and vice versa. Great to see full band versions of NC songs. Peace.

Last one, I'm not sure if it's the first or second encore, but you can see the crowd that rushed to the front of the stage making my second row seats no longer second row and forcing my short self to have to stand on the chair to see!

I cant wait to see MAS in Chicago so soon. Should be a fun drive from St. Louis.

By the way, what you said was a dulcimer, looks more like a lap steel.

See you in Chicago!

Glen played a dulcimer. I was there and I know the difference. He also played a beautiful resonator.

hehe, he played both a Dulcimer and Lap steel at the SF show.

UpInYourHeart
07-30-2004, 10:12 PM
Yeah he did both in Seattle too...but that was just the dulcimer pic in question.

Anyway...here are all of my good ones or something like that for MASs consumption - haha, bad pun I know...

Hehe, I think it went something like,

Anthony
He said he cant love me
But i think he can
and I told him so
just before he ran

I thought it was pretty humorous. And JPJ's eager facial expressions while singing backup were priceless!

Great pics - thanks for sharing! I really wish I could get to see them.

Quick question - is Glen playing a Takamine in those photos?

Probably be awhile before I am done with my recording. It sounds ok. I wish the damn idiots on the main floor would of let me and my friends taped. The sad thing is that there were no huge stacks so the sound didn't get up into the balcony that well. I will keep everyone posted...

What's the story on the 2 Pete Droge songs? Did he play them by himself, or with the full band? Anyone know the song titles??

UpInYourHeart
08-02-2004, 06:52 PM
I'm not quite sure what the first one was called, all I remember was it was a very traditional country kind of sound - I believe everyone played on it (or at the very least Nickel Creek played with him). The second was the song he wrote with Kim Richey in her living room (or something along those lines) called Electric Green - he sang over half of it on his own and then Glen came out and sang harmonies on the rest of it, I believe.

But of course, this is off the top of my head almost a week later and I'm not one for remembering details all too well ;)

Of course, I just found this thread... :(

GREAT show. Not as good as their set at the Paramount in April, but that was a NC only show. I would have still killed to see MAS play again.

Jarod-- that sucks that you all had to move. I was in the front row on the main floor, and I was impressed at how low profile the taping setups were, but I guess it wasn't enough for some people. Hope it still turns out though. Let me know!

I think you can see me in some of the pictures! Well, I think you can see the outline of my head at least.

Was anyone else not into Droge's songs? He was alright, but it seemed to really interfere with the momentum they had building up. Sara's song was great, but I wasn't sure if I was suppposed to be laughing during some of it. I would have rather seen Chris, or Sean, or Glen do something solo than Pete...

Favorite moments:
1. Watching five incredibly talented musicians racing to keep up with Chris through all of Taxman, especially Glen, who had a funny sheepish smile as he calmly strummed the 1/4 notes.

2. When Chris started The Fox and nobody else on stage seemed to know what was happening. I am pretty sure that Sean didn't even have a guitar on at the start of it, but my view was obstructed...

I guess I just like it when Chris's appalling skill catches his stagemates off guard

3. JPJ and Sean playing Going To California, one of my favorite songs. By far one of the most memorable things I've seen at a show.

4. Rushing the stage for the encore. You haven't lived until you've seen Chris play RIGHT over your head. If he'd been sweating more, it would have fallen on us, which is kind of disgusting to think about, but sort of exciting as well.

See, in a way, I liked it better than the Paramount show in April, but maybe it's because this is the first NC show (well it wasn't REALLY a NC show, but you know what I mean) where I really got to go with my friends. I mean, I went with two of my best friends to Bumbershoot, but they were sitting in the seats while I held the fort on the floor (I have no idea what i'm saying), and then the Paramount was with two girls I'd went to school with who weren't into doing anything silly like making little dances to the music or anything...and then you got MAS with my best friend Anne and her friend Travis the drummer...haha - umm that really had nothing to do with the show, but maybe it's, having the ideal crowd to go to the show with makes it that much better? *shrugs*

I dug the first Droge song, but Electric Green definitely slowed down the pace in a not so positive way...

I didn't notice that about the Fox...great...now I missed something that would be considered a classic move in my book...go figure! lol

All I know is, I wanted to be a part of the NC mosh pit (lol), but I'm way too short...I needed to stand on the theater chair to see over people's heads...but umm that was kind of fun, except when I'd stand too far to the back of the chair and it'd try to make me fall...that wasn't very nice.

Man, I have no idea what i'm going to do in Sioux Falls with no Nickel Creek concerts...eesh...someone help me devise a plan to get them there....either that or introduce me to a well-off, single and attractive business man in the Sioux Falls area who will jet off with me to Minneapolis or Chicago - hahaha...jk!
