I first got into bluegrass music when I heard the original Dixie Chicks back in the early '90s (way before they got famous, fired the original lead singers, and went pop). When I saw MAS in concert the other night I was reminded of some of those early Dixie Chicks songs....especially a song from their first album called I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart (which was actually a revival of a song from the 1930s).

So I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that NC has performed I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart in concert before!!

I highly recommend The Dixie Chicks' 1990 album Thank Heavens For Dale Evans -- fans of Nickel Creek would enjoy it immensely, I think.

I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart was the first ever million-selling record by a solo woman in country music, Patsy Montana. It was a VERY major hit in the 1930s.

Nickel Creek recorded it on their first album. It's one of my favorite cuts from that CD - hearing eleven year old Sara doing her singing yodeling is an absolutely amazing experience!

There have been many other recorded versions - one of my favorites is from Suzy Boggus, on her first album.
