KEEPING TIME: NEW MUSIC FROM AMERICA'S ROOTS 2

directed by Gillian Grisman

YEAR
2003

21 MINS, Color

The contemporary face of traditional American music is explored in this original Sundance Channel documentary series. The second program, Acoustic Innovators, presents a close-up look at Nickel Creek, a trio who won a 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. With their bluegrass mix of guitar, mandolin and violin, Nickel Creek headlines at both country festivals and rock clubs (where they've been known to perform a mean version of Nirvana's Lithium). Keeping Time was developed by director Gillian Grisman and producer Alicia Sams. TVPG CCAP/Stereo

There's also the airing of PBS's Soundstage coming up...you all remember that right? *would do a spiffy search to bring up previous posts on the subject, but I'm a lazy gal* Around Aug 19th - so check your PBS affiliates!

Thanks for the reminder about the Soundstage program--that should be great. Gillian Welch and Joan Baez perform as well. Here's some promotional information about NC from the PBS site:

Grammy winners Nickel Creek point the direction in which instrumental folk is headed. The 20-something trio plays their hit Smoothie Song, along with the crowd-pleasing 'I Should've Known Better.' Mandolinist Chris Thile strums with a vengeance to other bluegrass-inspired tunes including 'Tom Bombadil,' 'Reasons Why' and 'This Side,' while siblings Sara Watkins on fiddle and Sean Watkins on guitar demonstrate versatile musicianship and their knack for exceptionally smooth harmonies.

Here's the link to a relevant thread of earlier discussion about the Soundstage show:

Now does anyone know a date?? At the site (http://www.pbs.org/wttw/soundstage/jbaez/featured.htm) it doesn't say. It says premiers August 2004

Anyone know a specific date so that I can set my VCR??

Okay.. so I figured out how to get a date and time. At the main PBS website, you enter your zip code, and choose the station you watch... and then do a search for Nickel Creek soundstage... and then click which ever one, and then airdates on the side. :D

For Marylanders, set your VCR for MPT on August 19th at 10!! YAY! [party]

I'm confused. What's going on? Are they going to be on VH1 or Conan on the 12th? :(

Don't be confused. they will be on Conan the 12th.

Just to clarify, the 12th is correct, but ONLY if you live in the eastern time zone and don't see Conan until 12:35 VERY EARLY IN THE MORNING. If you live anywhere else, it will be an hour or more earlier (depending on the time zone) on Wednesday, August 11, VERY LATE AT NIGHT. Get it? :)

Also, they will be on NBC, The Conan O'Brien show, and not on vh1. The vh1 reference was just to their website, which listed the performance on Conan.

My mother bet me 5 dollars that I wouldn't be able to stay up to watch the show, because I have to be an altar server tomorrow at a funeral mass at 9:30 AM.

*yawns*

Only an hour and a half until the show comes on Woo I'm winning!!

My dad doesn't think that I will be able to stay up that late either. For me it is 3 and a half hours!

Just in case anyone does not get a chance to watch the Conan show tonight, Comedy Central will replay it at 5 pm the next day (ie Thursday). Might try to watch this tonight. Thanks for the info :).

We haven't bought the MAS CD yet (as we're poor and whatnot), so this was some of my first exposure to the material, really. I likes it.

I knew it would only be the song performance. Conan and most other late night shows only have the song performance when they have a band on.

-rargh-! And I get 5 hours of sleep last night while? Thanks for the info though lol just a little late for me.

And yep, Sara = same shirt at Cleveland! ;)

I did stay up and I've been paying for it all day at work...I just knew I couldn't sleep unless I watched it (even though I was taping it, too). They were so incredible!! I agree that they barely showed Sean at all...no close shots at all, and he was hardly ever in the group shots. However, they did sound amazing. The mando could have been turned up louder-- Chris' solo was smokin (of course). It's absolutely amazing what he can do in 16 counts. And Sara's solo was great, too--she definitely had it cranked up a notch. They all seemed to really enjoy themselves, and I bet they had a great time meeting Conan, who plays guitar and is a music lover. When my husband and I lived in New York, we went to a Conan taping once, and it was really a fun experience.

One thing-- did anyone notice the music stand by the drum kit, which presumably had drum charts on it? It looked like he was reading it while playing. John Paul Jones, on the other hand, looked like he was all over it and lovin' every minute. How cool is it for Nickel Creek that their current bass player was the bassist and a leading creative force of LED ZEPPELIN, one of the greatest and most influential rock bands of all time??!! Seeing it last night on TV made it all real to me, and I am so happy for them.

:)

He was, because he had it at the concert I went to on Tuesday. I actually saw it when the roadies were taking down the equipment.

That was the first Conan show I saw ever; just wondering- does Conan say Somebody say that second part was unnecessary on every show? I noticed that.

Interesting that Pete has to use charts....but I guess they haven't had much time to rehearse. And he did do a nice job, so I guess it's no big deal.

No, Conan doesn't say the phrase Some would say that second part was unnecessary in every show...it was just a joke that he repeated a few times last night. He did the same type of repetitive joke when he was promoting the 10th Anniversary and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog DVDs that I'm sure NBC forced him to promote. Lots of late night guys repeat stuff during shows...sometimes what's not that funny the first time becomes funnier when you repeat it in a different context. Or sometimes it doesn't. :)

I agree. He didn't get much screen-time as the others. But hey, I don't run the cameras.

Bryan and I were discussing why all of the Creek didn't get much screen time and Bryan pointed out that most of the focus was on Glen as he was singing lead. None of them got much screen time, Sean least of all probably because a) he didn't have a mic in front of him and b) he was just over there playing guitar so the camera men didn't think about it much.

Just a theory there.

and it was also sad to not even see a mic in front of him! :( (he can sing tooooo!!)

Of course but he doesn't sing harmony on that song so it was unnecessary. :o

I caught the show again at 6 on Comedy Central and have another note: Conan didn't mention that anything about that it was Glen Phillips + Nickel Creek = MAS; he just said MAS and nothing special about that. :( Beautiful together as well as apart and nobody knows that. Except us elite few mwhaha.

Did anyone else notice when Conan came onstage after their performance how freaken tall he is. I mean Chris is tall, but Conan made Chris look small and Sean looked even smaller. It was so cute, i just love short guys.

fiddlincklcrker
08-13-2004, 08:55 AM
I noticed about Conan being so tall too. I was like I know that everytime someone walks over to Sean and Sara that it makes them look short but to make Chris look like a troll is something out of the ordinary.

MemphisLovesNC
08-13-2004, 10:50 AM
Yes, Conan is REALLY tall. I believe he is 6'3 or 6'4. In person, he is a giant. When we went to see his showed taped, he comes out before the show, meets audience members, and generally carries on with random silly antics and comments. It was hysterical. I enjoyed that more than the show itself, even though Sly Stallone was a guest (talk about MAJOR stage make-up on that guy-- he looked orange in person!!). If you've ever seen Conan's videos that he does talking to people on the street, that's what the pre-show is like, but even better, because he is good at physical comedy with that long, lanky body.

FYI, David Letterman is also tall- I think 6'2or 6'3. Interesting that two major late night hosts are so tall.

Did anyone see MAS on Conan last Wednesday?
It wasn't announced anywhere, but I walked into my room just as the opening sequence went DAX SHEPHERD... MUTUAL ADMIRATION SOCIETY... and I promptly ran out into the living room and told TiVo to record it.

Did anyone else see it?

I didn't see it but my friend in the US told me about it and she has taped it for me, so I will get to see it soon hopefully, along with the Soundstage they are on this month - can't wait to see it! :)

Thursday afternoon I was flipping through the channels around 5 pm est and I found Conan on, which I normally don't get to catch in the day because I work until 8pm, but last week I had training and an earlier shift :D .
He had just finished the routine with the snakes that he did that episode when he said coming up next is MAS. I wasn't sure if I just thought I heard him say that or if he really did? I changed the channel and flipped back to him a few minutes later and sure enough, he was holding up the CD for MAS. I couldn't believe it because I had no idea it was even going to be on because I missed the post for it. It was really great though!! It just made me even more psyched for the MAS show Thursday night now!!!

I wondered how NC w/ drums would sound and it sounded great!!
I'll have to remember to set my vcr for that same night to tape the soundstage too.

Maybe when the new NC album is coming out, they can be on w/o Glen. I'm not against Glen, I just am not obessed w/ him as I am NC.

Didn't I read somewhere that on some songs sometime in the past Sean plays piano and Chris did/does something.. I forget.

Catch MAS on A&E this Sunday
Tuesday, August 17, 2004
The band will be on A&E's Breakfast with the Arts this Sunday (August 22). Check your local listing for time and channel. MAS will play a few songs and there is a short interview as well. SET YOUR TIVO!!!

But I went on the A&E website and it doesn't seem like they will be playing...if they are, they weren't mentioned by name...
