Hey folks. This isn't a full review, just a few notes from what I remember. Overall, a very good show. I think I've come to appreciate MAS more after this concert. Anyway...
- This was my first NC/MAS show, and my second concert overall (I saw Kiss/Poison at the Tweeter Center a month ago, prior to this I just wasn't a big music fan in general). The Metro is a great venue: although it's battered and broken down, it was very cozy and had a rustic feel to it.
- Having never seen NC live before, I never noticed how short Sean was and how tall Chris was (not that this matters, just an observation).
- Chris' energy was probably the highlight of the show, for me at least. I loved the way he would jump around the stage, rockin' out on his mandolin. Glen seemed really amused by Chris' constant movement (as did Pete Thomas).
- They pretty much played the same set as the San Francisco show. Only difference came during the first encore (IIRC). Apparently, it was Pete Thomas' 50th birthday, so the band played 'Happy Birthday' while Pete was handed a cake (which he proceeded to place atop his head for some reason).
- Among my favorites from the musical selection were Sake of the World (my favorite song on the MAS album), Smoothie Song (John Paul Jones was awesome on the base during this), All I Want, an instumental version of Going To California (JPJ played mandolin), Taxman (Thile was just excellent during this song), Glen's acoustic version of I Don't Need Anything, Think About Your Troubles, Gallows' Pole, and The Fox (Thile threw in a quick version of Mediterranean Homesick Blues during this song).
- Sadly, I didn't get to hear much of the dialogue between MAS. Everytime they'd stop playing, some folks in the back of the room would begin constantly screaming JOHN PAUL JONES and WE LOVE YOU JONESEY! It was really annoying, and more than a few people were trying to quiet them down.
- I was kind of disappointed that Sean didn't bust out Chicago.
- On my way out, I picked up a free solo sampler as well as a dark MAS shirt. I didn't wait to see the folks get on the bus as I needed to get to a friend's house and was already running late.
- Overall, a very good show. Can't wait to see them again.
