Now I'm going to post a review and such because this is seriously an awesome CD and Ari is an amazing musician and a great guy, and of course, he's told me he's a NC fan (and that they're great - but of course we all know this)...and really, you all should go out and support the man! :)
I remember over a year ago, my friend Sarita had referred me to the music of Ari Hest. At an instance I was in love, and over this time my admiration for him has grown. Needless to say, when it was officially announced (I'd heard prior of Ari working on re-releasing Story After Story with newer versions of the songs and such for hopefully a major label) that Ari was signed to Columbia Records, I was excited and proud. But nothing could really usurp the feelings of joy I had when I've popped in my very own copy of SOMEONE TO TELL (bought on Wednesday the 11th because I had searched many stores on the 10th with NO COPIES AVAILABLE - but not because it was sold out, because they just didn't carry it. Needless to say I'm having a talk with these retailers!). From the second I'd heard They're Onto Me I just couldn't STOP beaming and feeling so proud of Ari that he's finally gotten to the point of REALLY making his dream come true, and it's all so inspiriing.
Ari Hest is seriously one of the most amazing singers, song writers and musicians I've ever stumbled upon and yet it's still surprising that he's making it in the business - just because of the fact that music is SO fickle, at least in the mainstream. It really is a business and if you can't be marketed and sold, you can't get anywhere. And yet, Ari seems to be by-passing these standards and pushing his way through, and this CD is definitely a testament to it.
As I said, the starter track, along with Not For Long proves Hest can REALLY rock it, if he so chooses to, and yet he can slow it down and rip your heart out with an emotional ballad (see, Strangers Again <with the almost haunting background vocals towards the end>,Holding On, When Everything Seems Wrong, and Anne Marie). There is also the song of frustration in not fully catching that love of yours full attention in a somewhat light-hearted, but fully effective way that Fascinate You touches on. But love is not the only subject Ari can approach so articulately, there is the sassiness of Consistency' (it's only sassy because it's all about the horns), and the subject matter of kissing the past goodbye with Monsters and A Fond Farwell. And to fill up this set, we've got Aberdeen which fully embodies the complete I'm moving on attitude.
But what really rounds off this great CD is the final track (which is also the title track to the CD), Someone To Tell. In a way, it really sums up exactly everything Ari has said and leaves the listener on cue to be sure to pick up where he left off the next time around, which by the way, you can BET I will be sure to do! :)
