hey linh
i remember you from the glen boards :) I think you and Ryan right? Anyways I'll be there, row D section A in case you're interested in meeting up. We'll probably be hanging out post show (though i dont know how, the mountain winery isnt ideal for that kinda thing) but it'd be nice to reminisce with some Toad fans as well ;-)

Sorry I missed you guys, I looked around after the show, but didn't see you. It was an awesome show tho! Next time I'll try to post earlier, so we could figure something out. :) If you know anyone who taped, let me know. I'd love to make a trade.

(I found that title amusing... it certainly fit the venue!!!)
The Nickel Creek concert at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga was simply a perfect evening! It's been really hot here, and the show was outdoors in this spectacular venue. The view was insane! Johnny and Steph took pics, so hopefully I'll get some of those soon. I was told, as we walked in the gates... that they didn't allow cameras with long noses. Yes, noses ROFL. (I had to supress the urge to ask if she meant lens!!) I actually had to walk back to the parking lot to return my camera to the car. The security person said, you could put it at check in... I said, no thanks... to which she replied Hey that's a nice camera but someone just checked in one more expensive than that. Gee... thanks, I feel soooo mcuh better! Somehow leaving my camera (which has no ID on it) in a check in (and having to deal with getting it after) did not sound appealing to me. Maybe that other guy can afford to replace his camera, I had no desire to do so!!! Anyhow, so I didn't get any pics. (boo) But Steph did, so there is hope hehe.
The crowd was a bit on the civilized side (the venue tends to attract an older crowd and the affluent with their teenage kids... the parking lot was a sea of Mercedes-Benz, BMWs and Lexus LOL) Though one section off to the right made us proud, they were WAY into it! I had one ticket front row center (some of you may recall my earlier tragic story about this ticket purchase ) The people to my left had no interest in friendly chit-chat (boo) but the people on my right were super nice. Creek fans from the bay area who got their tix that first day online too. I did talk to one couple who paid the ticket broker fees... ouch.
The nite was amazingly beautiful, warm and starlit, with a chorus of crickets chirping along. It made for a truly magical environment (if you'll excuse the cheezy adjective LOL) They had little bukets with candles in them at each mic (turns out they were OFF bug candles hahaha) but hey, they added a nice touch. The setlist was pretty similar to the Creek shows on the Spring Tour, a mix from both albums with a few new songs. Nothing that was new to those of us who causght the last SF show (we did get our hopes up every time they said new song ) It was a neat show that we all felt pretty lucky to attend. They mentioned it had been a while since they'd done a Creek show, and that is would be a while until they did another! It was like this little wandering sheep off the tour flock hahahhaa.
The hilights for me were varied. The opening with Big Sam Thompson... which just brought back fond memories of my first Creek show (and the beginning of my mandolin interest-turned addiction) Later on in the show, before House Carpenter... Chris said something about it being a good song to sing up on a mountain... though it wasn't about a mountain, it was a good campfire song. Sean picks a little bit of a mountain song and Chris looks over, and starts playing it too & Sara joins in. To which Chris replies with I was thinking of... and plays part of High on a Mountain and then Sara kicks off You Don't Have to Move that Mountain... it was awesome!!! Everyone was totally diggin it!! Then they digressed back to the real song... and again commented about it being not a mountain song, but indeed a campfire song. Sara takes her candle and places it in front of Chris, and they all gather the candles in a bunch near him so it looks like a campfire. At which point, Sara chimes in with It's like a Chris Thile shrine! The people at MandolinCafe would be so proud!! OMG that was HILARIOUS. I was laughing so hard at that point, my sides hurt. We all were... in fact Chris said Hey, at least the people on the front row are having a good time!
That was beautiful. What a riot. I didn't get a set list, maybe Steph will chime in somewhere with her oh-so-good memory. The ones I can remember (not in order) are:
Big Sam
Should Have Known Better
Lighthouse
Speak
Trouble
Ode
Tom B.
House Carpenter
Jacksmith
Reasons Why
Doubting Thomas
Taxman
Ferdinad (hey Sean, why don't you pick a song of yours? Maybe something in F#min? in 6? )
This Side
where its at > the fox > drone > the fox
Pictures
Stumptown (which is Itzinay's new name)
There's more I believe... it was a BIG set... someone else can chime in haha.
Encore:
Sweet Afton
Cuckoos Nest
Caleb Meyer
Chris's Yodle mix LOL
Be Thou My Vision
After the show was the only bummer, we bascially got herded out of the place. Then we where haingin in the parking lot (with a STUNNING view of the valley lights) it was such a warm night, and noone really wanted it to end. But soon enough, came a cop with, get this... a spotlight, shining it on all the groups of people and telling them (through the loudspeaker) that the parking lot was closed and we had to leave. So, none got to see the band after... which obviously bummed out some folks who had brought stuff to sign. But, it couldn't dampen our spirits, the evening really was just quite lovely.

Is there a bay area MAS fan group that gets together for jams, sing alongs and such? I don't play any instruments, but I always have fun when Ryan organizes those types of events, so I'd be interested if there are any...maybe when they come around again :)

Hey, I'm at work right now so I haven't had a chance to post a review, but I have some downsized photos I took in my blog (www.xanga.com/johnnydo)
Haha, a MAS fan group should be created ;-) Where exactly in the bay are you located? Heather and I are more in the south bay (i'm in san jose) but everytime glen or nickel creek or anything related comes along, we're always there ;-) Maybe we can start a group get together for these shows :)
Wilco's coming in November if anyone's interested ;-)

Adyn/ Johnny - I couldn't have described the evening better. Thanks for recounting the story - brought me right back again :) BACA - LOL - that's awesome!
It's show's like this one that remind me how awesome live music is - I tend to get busy, and forget to have a life outside work.
I'm also in the south bay (Campbell area). I'd definitely be up for getting together next time. I'm a big fan of Toad/Glen/MAS/NC and all derivitives of :). Also like Barenaked Ladies, Beatles, Beach Boys, Sarah Mclachlan, U2, and others...I've heard a lot of Wilco, but haven't heard their stuff. Always looking for good music...
