How about this question....

When was the first time you ever heard Nickel Creek music? I haven't seen a post like that, I think it could get interesting...

So, when was the first time you heard NC music? Was it love at first listen? [noise]

I first heard Nickel Creek when my mom bought their CD...she has been a fan of Alison Krauss ever since i can remember, and when she found out that Alison had produced their album, she went right out and got it. And yes, it was love at first listen! I stole the Cd from her and listened to the Lighthouse about 20 times a day! But I didn't REALLY fall in love with them until I saw them live. After that though, I was hooked!

Thanks for the topic starter! I'll be interested to hear everyone else's Nickel Creek stories!

I first heard of Nickel Creek while I was reading a newspaper magazine thingy. It had this tiny blurb on them. I had never really enjoyed country when I was growing up, and didn't really know exactly what bluegrass was. But I always loved a capella groups, classical, rock, celtic, stuff like that. So I went out and bought their cd knowing next to nothing about them, and fell instantly in love. Then I discovered this site and got to find out more about them and other fans. That pretty much sealed my fate, if you may. Now, I am pretty much a hardcore fan (along with Katy :D ). And, if i might add, am enjoying every aspect of fan-hood. Pretty much everyone on this board is so intelligent and insightful. I love hearing what ya'll have to say about varied subjects.

I think the first time I heard it was by mistake as a passed over CMT while watching TV. The video was Reasons Why. That was when I was still biased against country music (listen to it all the time now), so I didn't take much interest and turned the channel after a few seconds. Sometime later, the same thing happened. I think it musta been right after Leann Womack had drawn me to CMT. Come Back Down came on. I saw Sara...I was hooked. I caught the video a few more times and heard how good they were at vocal harmony, so I went out and bought the CD. I've been an NC Freak ever since.

this may cause you to fall out of your seat, so hold on:
I first heard them on the RADIO!
our local NPR station plays lots of good music including Alison and Gillian, so they're a natural for 88.1. I forget what song I heard first. Then they came to town for our local free concert series, but I was in a wedding! But I heard nothing but good reports. So I got the album for Christmas and havent looked back.

Which brings up another good point....don't you guys think it's funny that The Lighthouse's Tale can go to Number One on the CMT Top Twenty Countdown, yet get virtually NO airplay at all on the radio? I mean, I think that in my whole life, I've heard NC on the radio MAYBE 7 times. Anyone else think that's crazy? Why won't the radio play them?

I first saw them on CMT with the video When You Come Back Down. I was instantly hooked. Don't know why but I just absolutely loved them.

Hope to see them in person one day. I have never been to a concert in my life.

Would love to hear them on the radio but the country stations around here are not the ones I'm going to hear it on.

OMG! You HAVE to see them in person! I mean, you cannot really experience Nickel Creek untill you've seen them live! It's a life-changing experience! At least, it was for me! I've now seen them in concert 7 times and each show has only made me love them more!

i first saw them perform at the country music awards - probably in 2001 (but that seems like such a long time ago!). i can't even remeber what song they played but it wasn't like anything else and i thought i should track them down.

they've had a bit of support from the good old bbc since then so they get a bit of radio play and things...

I first heard them on CMT's On The Verge show they did on them. I liked keith urbans music so I was watching because he was also featured. I had no intention to watch the Nickel Creek part, but for some reason I watched it and I was hooked and went out and bought the CD within a week of seeing the show.

I have yet to see them in concert too. If they ever got semi-close for a concert I'd go, but all the concerts listed in there web site are all over a 6 hour drive.

I first heard of NC when I saw their video, Reasons Why, on CMT. I loved the song from probably the first time I heard it (it seems so long ago now I don't remember for sure). I do remember that once I did fall in love with it, everytime it would come on I would turn the TV up really loud and sing along. I found the CD at Wal-Mart when it still had the old cover but hesitated to buy it because I wasn't sure I would like the other songs. (I usually listen to as much of a CD as possible before I buy one when I don't know the artist because I hate to just pile up CDs and never listen to them.) Anyway, I finally just decided to give it a try when the new cover came out. I hate to admit it but the great picture probably influenced me somewhat. Once I got the CD the more I listened to it the more I loved it. :D

Yeah, the old cover and the new cover are definately a LOT different! I got the old CD and barely even recognized NC when I got the new one!

I first heard of them by the Reason's Why video on CMT. It was early spring '99 so I don't think it'd been out or gotten much play at all yet. I noticed Sara's voice b/c I'm a big Alison fan, and when I saw that she had produced it, I knew it'd be great. The only place I could find it was Barnes and Nobles. It was long before you could even find it at Wal-Mart I guess. They've definitely changed a lot since their first cover.

i was at home sick with the flu in January this year - i was flicking through channels and stopped on VH1 Country, hoping to see a Dixie Chick or Shania Twain video (not a big country music fan, unless it's the chicks or shania). The video for When You Come Back Down came on and it had a different sound, so i decided to leave it on. To be honest, my first thought that they were a goody two-shoes family band, down-home country and trying to make it in the big time (again, i wasn't into country music that much). well, sean and sara are related, but their talent and sound won me over - and when i was at home recovering from my miscarriage, i saw the video and decided to buy the CD. and i am so glad i did. there are a lot of songs on there that helped me get the through tought times - and their love for the Lord shone through - and that is what kept me afloat through it all. i have been listening to them non-stop since then.
you know, i just thought of something - their newgrass/pop-ish/acoustic/folk sound is the reason why i kept listening - i don't think it will harm them with the release of the new CD - they will have more and more fans soon, but we all know the truest fans were the ones who have been through it all.
am i right?

I had caught a cold, and couldn't concentrate on a book, so I was lying on the couch all day watching tv. I was only mildy interested in country music then, and since nothing else was on I started watching CMT. I ended up watching music videos all day, and I became hooked on country. Then I saw the video When You Come Back Down and I was thinking WOW [bigeyes] They're Great! :D From then on I was an NC junkie. [noise]

I was just thinking about this today!!

My whole experience with Nickel Creek has been full of coincidences. I went on a month-long road trip with my best friend, and we both brought along surprise CDs...She brought Nickel Creek because she saw they were playing in our town and my sister gave me a copy to bring..we hadn't listened to them, but once NC went in to the CD player it didn't come out! I guess this might make us freaks, but we listened up through Montana, into Canada, down through Seattle and the west coast and back across the Nevada desert! We've been fans ever since!

One coincidence happened day before yesterday...a friend of her brother was passing through town and we got to chatting about Nickel Creek and found out his aunt does management for Alison Krauss. That was really bizarre...

Later!

Well, a long time ago a family member yelled at me a couple of times to Come see these guys, Mom! but by the time I got to the tv, Reasons Why was ending. I clicked CMT on once and caught WYCBD from the start...and that really hooked me. I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. It was like finding a diamond ring in the sand!

When I first heard Nickel Creek I was in my Dads Bus and we were at a bluegrass festival in Ca. Chris was about 12 and short and really fat. Boy has he ever changed! At that time Chris's Dad was on bass I think that was who. Anyways I was around 7 and I can remeber my Dad saying those kids are going to be in Nashville one day. And look where they are!

I've loved bluegrass for a long time. Alison Krauss enchanted me with her voice and fiddle. When I heard she was producting a group, I bought the CD and fell in love. I've been listening to them and raving about them to people. I cracks me up when I'm talking about music and someone tells me they just found about NC :) I love their musicianship, song writing, and the fact that they are influneced by all types of music.[noise]
